As we celebrate Mother's Day, I can't help but think about all the mothers who've been mentors, friends, and sometimes even our personal stand-up comedians. From my own dear mother -- who had an uncanny ability to touch my conscience and my moral compass when she'd say before I walked out our front door, "Let your conscious be your guide", which kept me God-minded. To the wise and loving, faith-filled women who have guided me with humor and grace, I know each one left a footprint on my heart.
I've been blessed with children of my own, but let's face it, motherhood often extends to anyone who's ever had to fish a sock out of a vacuum cleaner or explain why the clouds really aren't cotton candy! It's about the countless moments of comfort, laughter, guidance, and the unwavering support that we offer to those entrusted to our care.
My mother was a fountain of wisdom, especially when things got tough, always there with her famous line, "This too shall pass -- and if it doesn't, we'll hide it under the rug!" Her mix of faith and resilience, peppered with her notorious one-liners, continues to inspire me.
But Mother's Day isn't just for celebrating our own mothers. It's for honoring all the women who sprinkle motherly joy in their day-to-day lives. It’s for the aunt who always sneaks you an extra slice of cake, the teacher who knows a hug is sometimes the best lesson, and the friend who will always tell you when you have spinach in your teeth.
To my daughters, Staci and Shawntel, who’ve tackled motherhood with a boatload of wisdom, grace and gusto (and a good sense of humor), I’m so proud. Your tales of mealtime manners OR NOT, and your politics of sharing and giving could fuel sitcoms, and your love for your children shines even on the rainiest days.
And to all the women who've shared a laugh, wiped a tear, or passed the broccoli, thank you. Your acts of love, big and small, weave threads of joy and strength into the tapestry of our lives.
As we celebrate Mother's Day, let's recall Proverbs 31:26, "She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue." Here’s to spreading not just wisdom and kindness but also a little laughter, because sometimes, that's the best kind of wisdom there is.
Here’s to you, dear mothers, mentors, and unsung heroines. May this Mother's Day be filled with love, laughter, and perhaps a well-deserved nap or two!
