When we were docked at Bar Harbor, Maine, Carl was on his cell phone with a business associate. I took a photo of him on that call and made it a story on my Facebook reel. I added the song, “Operator, Information. Give me Jesus on the line.” At the time it was extremely funny to me and, thus, here I am writing a blog from that visual!
Communication vital in our relationships with each other and with God. Fortunately, Jesus has given us a permanent 'hotline' to Him. Unlike the red phone, it's not just for emergencies. It’s open for us all the time.
King David in Psalm 37:4 didn’t have a phone, but he sure could give us sound advice: “Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” Instead of chasing our desires, if we delight in God, He will place the RIGHT desires in our hearts!
Here’s what connecting with God offers in Psalm 37:
1. Faith Over Fear: Life can be scary, right? But David tells us three times in that chapter, “Do not fret.” Instead, trust in the Lord. Faith is the antidote to fear and panic.
2. Guidance on Decisions: Ever felt stuck making a big decision? “Commit your way to the Lord” (verse 5). First, bring it to God in prayer. Second, trust He’s in control. Third, watch Him work as we keep moving forward.
3. Peace in our Heart: In our busy lives, finding peace can seem impossible. Yet, by setting aside time to “be still before the Lord” (verse 7), we open ourselves to His calming presence, reducing our worries and anger.
In Luke 4 and 5, we see Jesus managing the demands of His ministry by often withdrawing to pray. If Jesus needed to recharge through prayer, how much more might we benefit from it?
And let’s not forget about the importance of listening. Jesus spent plenty of time in solitude but also engaged deeply with Scripture. His life was a balance of speaking to God and listening to His words.
We live in a privileged era when we can connect with others easily. But, thanks to Jesus, we are able to connect freely with God. This connection is our spiritual 'hotline,' not restricted by time or space. It’s there for us to share our concerns, make decisions and find our peace.
So, next time we feel overwhelmed, let’s remember our hotline to God is just a prayer away. It’s our direct line to peace, guidance, and reassurance. No red phone needed!
