Remember the bumper sticker: “God is my co-pilot”? While well-intended, it misses the mark. If we’re in the pilot seat, we're bound to veer off course. Letting God lead is the only way to navigate life’s journey successfully. Better said is “Jesus, take the wheel!”
A Co-Pilot is not in charge! By saying God is the Co-Pilot we are saying we are in control, we do as we please and go where we want and only let God take over when needed.
I was a private pilot for years, but I didn’t want the responsibility of flying the plane. I was happy being the co-pilot. I was uncomfortable with dark clouds, high winds and navigating through them. I was at peace because my pilot was confident and well-trained.
God is my Pilot and Him in control brings relief to trusting where He takes me. When I say "He is my Pilot", I can rest knowing He is above all. I am not co-equal with Him. By saying God Is My Pilot I am saying God is in charge!
I’ve learned, oftentimes the hard way, to make my own plans and then, ask God to bless them. Been there, done that and wished I had sought my Pilot’s wisdom. His ways are so much higher than our ways.
Jesus modeled this perfectly in the Garden of Gethsemane when He prayed, “Not my will, but Yours.” God loves to hear our dreams and aspirations, but He knows what’s best for us. Trusting Him means laying our plans at His feet, knowing He sees far beyond what we can imagine.
Proverbs 16:3 says, “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.” Wherever God has placed us — work, school, family, neighborhood — He’s positioned us to be a light, to love, encourage, and reflect His character. That’s God’s blueprint for success.
We can start each day with the prayer, “Lord, help me to show Your love to my family, my neighbors, my co-workers today.” It transforms our outlook. What we do becomes a mission field, and even mundane tasks become significant. We are God’s co-pilot – His assistant on this earth!
Working for God changes everything. Our attitude shifts, and everything we do becomes part of God’s greater plan. Let’s accept His invitation to partner with Him. Letting Him pilot our lives will provide us with a destination better than we ever dreamed.
