Just Do You

Carl and I have a sweet relationship -- but to be honest, there are times we don’t see eye-to-eye. You know… “different strokes for different folks.”

This photo is of the puzzle given to us for our 2nd year anniversary. As awesome as it looks -- it was a workout to get it together. We saw the pieces differently. Whew!

We see a lot of things alike -- but many things that aren't. He likes the thermostat warmer -- I like it colder. He is a comedian -- I'm not! I'm the one who laughs again and again even though I've heard those same stories and jokes a hundred times! He prefers steak. I prefer chicken.

I came to realize -- it really doesn't matter for either us. We say to each other -- “Just do you!”

God didn’t make us carbon copies. He made us with quirks, preferences, talents, and even stubborn streaks that make us… us. When handled with grace and humor, those differences can make a relationship stronger, not weaker.

It wasn’t always this easy for me. As a teenager, I longed to look and act like the “popular” drill team and cheerleader girls. They had curves --while I was built like a broomstick. They were outgoing -- I was shy. They had silky blonde hair -- I had dishwater colored hair!

But somewhere along the way, I had an aha moment! God didn’t make me to be them or anyone else. He made me to be me. And He doesn’t make mistakes. Psalm 139 says we are fearfully and wonderfully made. That means our height, our hair color, our laugh, our way of thinking -- was intentional.

“Just Do You” doesn’t mean refusing to grow or change where needed. It means not bending ourselves into a pretzel to be someone else. It’s being confident in who God created us to be, while giving others the same grace to be who they are.

So whether we’re in a marriage, a friendship, a family, or a church -- remember: it’s okay to see things differently. It’s okay to have opposite opinions on ice cream flavors or furniture placement. It’s okay to have quirks. It's okay to be YOU!

Because God made you and me to be....YOU and ME! And the world needs exactly that. So......JUST DO YOU -- the one God made YOU to be!
