Where Is Our Confidence?

Last week we went back in time as we visited the Titanic Exhibition here in Austin. What an amazing adventure!

The life-sized re-creations, personal stories, authentic artifacts, and even the icy water we touched -- that passengers experienced made history come alive.

Walking through the exhibit brought a whole new appreciation for that tragic night in 1912.

Last year, while on a New England cruise, we visited Halifax, Nova Scotia, where many Titanic victims are buried. Standing there, and now seeing this exhibit, reminded me that every statistic represented someone's mother, father, child, or friend.

The Titanic was considered a marvel of engineering. Yet despite its beauty and innovation, it lacked enough lifeboats, modern navigation, and many of the safety regulations we take for granted today.

It made me think about life.
We spend so much time building our schedules, careers, finances, and plans. While those things have value, none of them can guarantee tomorrow.

Only God can.

"Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God." (Psalm 20:7)

Every cruise we have enjoyed has been made safer by technology, regulations, and experienced crews. For that, I'm deeply grateful.

But even greater is the peace that comes from knowing our lives are held securely in God's hands.

Our greatest security has never been found in the strength of a ship -- but in the strength of our Savior.

"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." (Psalm 46:1)

The Titanic was one of the grandest ships ever built with tremendous confidence in human achievement, yet it reminded the world that our ultimate security is never found in what we build, but in the One who holds us.

Our God still reigns today!

The Titanic reminds us that no earthly vessel is unsinkable -- "but every life anchored in Christ is eternally secure." (Proverbs 4:18)
