Power Fishing -- Power Bait -- Power Living

Since the end of last year’s fishing trip in Oklahoma, we’ve looked forward to this day, this year. We’ll re-enact it all over again. It’s our Payton’s 20th birthday today and as has been requested by him for many years – we’re celebrating in grand “hook-line-sinker and power-bait” way – his favorite way!

I’m all in. Geared up, fishing clothes, enough food to feed this hungry crew and beyond, water shoes, hats, sun screen, bug repellant – all the necessities are checked off the list. It’s the list that was made originally by Papa and I years ago. Now it’s updated and all items are present and accounted for plus all the items for the guys' cabin. Changes came this year. Larry, Staci, Alexia and I will be staying in their super-sized RV. Payton and his two friends’ bachelor pad will be in a cabin.

It's Payton's birthday and it may sound like this is all for him -- oh, but not so. I remember last year, after fishing almost all day, we stopped to go in for dinner. It was getting darker and Larry asked Staci: “Wanna’ go fishing?” Her reply was “Morning, noon and night!” LOL! This girl is the real fishing deal. She vowed to fish in 50 different fishing holes across the U.S. this year – now that they have this RV. So, Payton gets his love for fishing honestly --- not to mention, he was Papa’s fishing buddy as long as Papa was on this side of heaven.

Fishing is a natural AND spiritual experience for us. We'll fish and pray, fish and praise, fish and meditate. It’s so natural to flow like that, especially when we’re smack dab in the middle of God’s creation wonderland. Fishing brings to mind how often we hear Bible stories of someone fishing or being eaten by a fish. Yikes! Jonah, what were you thinking?

It was the fishermen brothers, Peter and Andrew, who Jesus first called to be His disciples. It was fish that Jesus multiplied to feed the 5,000+. It was fish that Jesus cooked up for His disciples. It was in a fish’s mouth that Jesus sent the disciples to get the coin to pay their taxes. It was fish that Jesus likened to, when He said to His disciples “Be fishers of men”! There’s something about fishing. Jesus set the example, and we’re simply doing what He did. There’s a little competition, but mostly relaxation and a potential fish meal (or meals) in store, as the fruits of the rewards of fishing are bountiful. Aw! I can taste that beer-battered fried fish now! Great expectations!

By the campfire, we'll laugh and talk about our adventures in each day. We’ll rattle on about the “big one” that might have gotten away or the fishing techniques that an old fisherman might have shared with us. We’ll make lots more memories that we’ll continue to share for years to come.

This place may not fit into your idea of a dream vacation, but it is ours. I’m still remembering the many fishing trips when our kids were kids. All those memories continue to mount up – even to the point we know Payton and Alexia will want to bring their kids back here some day! Might I suggest that you ponder about the memories you'd like your kiddos to want a “repeat” with their kids. I promise. It's worth it! Now, until you hear from me again, we’ve GONE FISHING!

Oh, What a Beautiful Morning!

I'm singing that Rodgers & Hammerstein song from their "Oklahoma" musical this morning right here from Texas! I’ve been that morning gal most all my life. I own it. When I wake up, I don’t feel the need to pull the blanket over my head and long for just a few more minutes. I don't need an alarm clock -- mine is built-in -- usually, around 5:00 am. My daily schedule hasn't changed that much during this shelter-at-home. I would usually take my walks in the afternoon when it was warmer outsides.

That changed this week. Now, it’s at 6:15 am when I'm out and about with my one-hour walk. I, not being a sunshine-lover on my white-lily-skin, realized I needed to escape to the outdoors before the sun rose! I was blessed to make the change. Being a part of a brand-new day is now my new normal for spring and summer. It seems it’s easier to be an early morning noticer. Yesterday my phone’s playlist wouldn’t play, so I couldn’t listen to my “walking” music. I took out my earbuds and whoa-la – I heard birds chirping in almost every tree I passed. I saw little youngster geese following mama goose on the water. I noticed the beautiful colors of spring in all the plants and flowers that were revealing the exquisite details of our Master Creator.

And, I relished in those morning skies that soon gave way to a brilliant sunrise. I started praising and thanking God out loud. I noticed this baby sidewinder rattle snake – sidewinding his way across the sidewalk. I heard about the sidewinder snake from a friend years ago, but I met one on this day. Indeed, he was maneuvering sideways instead of slithering forward. I didn’t disturb him in case his mom or dad were around. But, I made a quick shout-out to God: “Please keep me moving straight ahead on the narrow path with You!"

God is awesome to give me so many object lessons on a daily basis, but this day I realized that when I’m in my own little world with earbuds on and belting out hallelujahs from a play list – though it’s a sweet opportunity for getting into the groove with God, it’s still a vice that’s not needed. Especially when God has divine set ups for me -- like my noticing -- seeing and hearing straight from His divine creation set-ups. And, oh those skies that welcomed me: "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands." (Psalm 19:1)

I think I’m learning and understanding that the “Genesis” story of creation really doesn’t give God’s handiwork the justice it deserves. We have to get out in it to appreciate it. Creation is proof of how God is so very present in all the intricate details of our lives. Jesus spoke of God’s attention to detail when He talked about God’s concern for the lily of the field. He cares about details – the colors everywhere, the rich variety of plant life, wildlife, and the climate. But, oh the crazy chaos that the enemy wishes to use to take our eyes off of God’s creation. He wants us to be inside-minded -- side-winders – void of the treasures God has stored up for us. He wants us to be “it’s all about me”, instead of “it’s all about WE”.

This world is made up of a family of people from all different ethnicities, backgrounds, beliefs and values – all those realities that should unite us and never put us at odds with one another. Seriously, I grapple with this still, devisive country when, if ever there was a time to unite, it is now. God has given us an opportunity to display who we are as HIS people -- all for one and one for all. Made in His image, shouldn't we be the reflection of our sovereign, loving God? We are chips off the “old block” who were born to create and love, too. So let’s create! Let’s love. Let's celebrate that we can see, be, live, laugh, love, reflect, and show our true colors. We too are creators who were born as God’s masterpieces who can display God’s glory and creative genius to a world that needs those colors and example so much!

HELP! If You Have a Great Passage – Send it my Way!

When we are far removed from the turmoil and fear that others go through during storms, tornadoes, torrential rains and now flooding, we pray and give positive thoughts and hopes for them, but still, we’re not in the middle of it. It's not touching us, so we go on about our business.

But this is Oklahoma, where our roots were for over 38 years, so my heart naturally gravitates to my friends and family there. Social media gives us visuals that tenderize our hearts. This photo is of Skiatook, OK (near Tulsa) that is under water right now. The relentless rain has raised the river and lake waters and can’t hold back the deluge. My friend’s drug store is under water. My sister and brother-in-law were helping to evacuate some of their employees because the flood waters are expected to cover their homes and more rain is on the way. Reports are that never has there been flooding so serious as is expected.

I saw a frantic FB post two days ago from a Tulsa friend. Her children were in the middle of the storm. She tagged me in her message. This is an excerpt of this desperate mom: “I can’t even keep tabs on them all, 40 plus tornadoes since Friday, now all over the State of Oklahoma -- homes lost, lives lost, flooding everywhere. Almost to the top of our bridges. Now time to be prepared to go down into our fraidy hole, again! I will be up all night now worrying about all our loved ones/friends and complaining it may seem, but I'm actually just venting and fear-filled, so please guys, pray for Oklahoma! Donna Wheat Wuerch if you have a great passage/message, please send it my way, Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA!”

Bless her heart. I did pray. The fact she called out my name put me on the spot of prayer and encouragement. I am humbled and honored that she called out my name while she was calling out God’s name. This is some of my response to her and it is my response to you today because you may be in a physical or spiritual storm and you need words of encouragement too:

“Oh, yes, sweet girl, I know those concerns. We lived in Oklahoma for 40 years and am well acquainted with storms and tornadoes. We knew those violent winds. I remember those times of concern when we went to our safe place in the middle of our home many times. It can be scary but we always trusted and placed confidence in God. We would speak to the storm, "In the name of Jesus, be gone!" I recalled scriptures like this one: "But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in Him." (Jeremiah 17:7) As Jesus did, we spoke to the storm "Peace be still!" And then we'd hover until the storm passed over. Eventually, it did. It's a huge test of our faith to be in a storm and trust in God, but it's those times, we have nothing left to do but to hunker down and trust in His mighty hand. Sweet girl, let peace in the storm be yours. God was always faithful to us and He will be to you, too! I pray for "cease and desist" to those storms now, in the mighty name of Jesus! I read your words: "I will be up all night now worrying…” Precious girl, worrying gets you nowhere, but praying God's Word, believing in His faithfulness and being confident that He is with you and your family gets you somewhere. Here are some to pray:

~ Nahum 1:7 "The LORD is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in Him."
~ Psalm 107:29 "He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed."
~ Psalm 91:1-2 "Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”
~ Isaiah 41:10 "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God."
~ Isaiah 26:3 "I will keep Him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Me."
~ Matthew 8:26 "He replied, 'You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm."

Stand strong for you and your family. Be the faith-talker, God-can-do-anything, nothing-is-impossible-for-Him, mighty woman of God you know you are! God’s peace be with you. Love you much. <3

Dear Jesus, wrap your loving arms around these families and bring a peace that is unexplainable and unending. I pray that a DIVINE sense of your presence invades their hearts and homes right now. Thank you for bringing light and hope to their lives. Thank you for the safety of my family and friends today. In Jesus' mighty name I pray, Amen!

Learning to Dance -- Whatever the Weather

Within 12 hours our temperature dropped 30 degrees. I was still surprised yesterday when I left my warm garage wearing a light jacket and when I exited my car a few minutes later, I shouted “Holy Tundra!” It felt like I walked into a freezer blowing icy winds. Burrrr! I received a text message from an Oklahoma friend who told me they were in a polar vortex! I was impressed with those words – after all, my friend is highly intelligent, but I, not having heard those words and neither am I highly intelligent, decided to look it up.

I found out that when the winter temperature abruptly plunges to a brutally cold low and you're shivering despite wearing thermal underwear and a down parka, it probably doesn't help much to hear the TV meteorologist cheerfully explain that the cause of your misery is a distortion of something called the polar vortex. The term got another workout when some of the coldest temps in a generation hit the U.S. recently. Some 90 million Americans experienced temps of below zero F (-18 C). The polar vortex is an atmospheric phenomenon of strong winds surrounding an extremely cold pocket of Arctic air that can travel far south, causing the temperature to plunge in places accustomed to having mild winters. That’s us, here in the South, right now! It’s being called Winter Storm Lucian and is responsible for ice-covered highways, sleet and snow, many vehicle accidents, thousands without electricity and several deaths.

We lived in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada for seven years, so we know what it is to plug your car into a heater at night, wearing boots and a fur coat as a necessity (not a fashion statement) and enjoying piles of snow until April. Winnipeg is one of the five coldest cities (below -21 C to -50C) in the world, according to AccuWeather. Despite the cold, people around the city embrace the chilly conditions by getting outside. Winnipeggers own winter. Perhaps Winnipeg received the nickname “Winterpeg” for the ability to winterize summer activities. The city hosts canoe and bike races in the snow. When their rivers freeze over, they make the longest skating trail in the country and gussy it up with art and warming huts along the way. And making the most of the situation, the Festival Du Voyageur turns the snow into impressive sculptures. The two-week festival makes some of the coldest weeks of the year, some of the most fun ones.

The weather – wherever we live and play – is subject to change daily. There will be extreme peaks of cold and heat and we can choose to sit out those times or we can celebrate and find the fun in those extremes. And in the same manner, when the winter and summer storms of life come, we can hunker down and just wait for them to pass. After all, who wants to go outside when it’s lightning and thundering and the winds are blowing 90 miles an hour? Or below freezing and risk getting frostbite? In the winter – we groan about the cold, and in the summer we whine about the heat. Don’t you love it when you see kids, completely CARE-FREE, bundling up for winter fun, building snowmen, sledding, ice skating, or running out, dancing and splashing in the rain? And, don’t you love it when little kids play in the summer – not paying any attention to the heat – so much so, that we have to remind them to put on sunscreen?

I’ve figured it out. Life isn’t about being concerned and worried about the storms, waiting for the storms to pass, or the winter or summer to pass – or STUFF that comes our way to pass. It’s about embracing the journey and learning how to dance whatever season, or whatever the weather might be, and even while going through the storms of life. I’ve been through some real snowstorms and downpours in my life, and I’m here to tell you I survived and, in fact, this gal has become quite the accomplished “weather dancer”. I know how to bend, and not break; I know how to do the “quick step” and I know how to “slow dance”, and, best of all, I’ve learned to depend on my Dance Partner, and following His “lead”. And in case you’re wondering who my Dance Partner is ----- He’s the ONE Who calms the storms and He’s the one Who created the dance!!

And Let the JUDGING Begin

As in every year since I was a little girl, I'll be watching the Miss America Pageant tonight when it is broadcast live on ABC. I still love getting caught up in the pomp of it all -- seeing those young women vying for scholarships, and finding out who will take home the crown of Miss America 2019. I was always starstruck by those beautiful, smart and talented young women. I'd watch and "judge" from my sofa, choose my favorite, and hope she'd be the winner. With great anticipation, I'd hear the names of the runners-up and hope I had "judged" accurately. What an adrenaline rush it was when I was right and heard Bert Parks sing "There she is...Miss America. There she is....your ideal."

In 1995, my husband and I were cheering so loudly for that adorable redhead from Oklahoma who was radiant, poised, articulate, and confident. We never imagined that just a few years later THAT GIRL, Shawntel Smith, would become "the love of our boy's life"! She won our hearts in the 1996 pageant, and soon the love of our hearts forever!

I understand that those young women are scrutinized to the nth degree by the judges who carry such huge responsibilities. They will determine the results which means dreams coming true for many who will receive sizeable scholarships, and of course, the one crowned Miss America.

"Judging" has become a way of life in our world. I thoroughly enjoy watching "reality shows" that offer talent and sports competitions where judges play a huge role in whether or not the competitors win or lose by just the smallest margin. Speaking of judging and being judged, many of us feel judged daily. People can, and will have opinions, but we should never doubt ourselves. We should have absolute faith in who we are and never should we let someone else's "opinion" become our reality. And neither should we judge others. We don't know their reality either. That cranky cashier's world could be falling apart. "Do not judge, or you too will be judged." Matthew 7:1

It also may feel like God is judging us, too: He rewards us when we're good and have boatloads of faith, He punishes and disciplines us when we make mistakes. Not at all. God doesn't judge or scrutinize us. He always responds to us in love. What counts to Him is that we come to Him. It's true He rewards those of us who believe and who diligently seek Him. He still loves us even when our faith is weak and we doubt and worry or are afraid. All He asks is for us is to come to Him. He will give Himself to us. No, He doesn't judge us with a scoring system. He is loving and teaching us to be the best we can be -- and He's handing us much more than a crown. In Isaiah 62:3, we read that we ARE a crown...."You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God."

When you're feeling a little disheveled, inadequate and weary from all that is expected of you, just remember WHOSE child you are, and straighten that crown! After all, you are a child of the King!

It’s Inevitable – Storms Will Come

It’s Inevitable – Storms Will Come
Storm: a violent disturbance of the atmosphere with strong winds and usually rain, thunder, lightning, or snow; tempest, squall, trouble, controversy, unsettledness

Just this week, while outdoors in extremely gusting winds, my friend expressed concern about our weather. She was from the North and moving to Texas was already on her radar screen for the inevitability of tornadoes. My encouragement: “Be smart, stay out of harm’s way, get your heart right with God AND pray!” That’s my recommendation even when there are NO storms.

I checked out her concerns and I found that emergency officials in Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas are bracing for the start of what’s historically the most active time of year for tornadoes. In the past three years there were more than 600 tornadoes in April, May and June. Having lived in Oklahoma and Texas, I’ve grown accustomed to preparing for multiple emergency situations happening at once. I remember the crazy hailstorms AND the tornadoes that devastated roofs in my subdivision last year – mine included. Wherever we may live, we must brace ourselves and our homes for uncertain weather conditions.

When the storms of life come, we can hunker down and just wait for them to pass. After all, who wants to go outside when it’s lightning and thundering and the winds are blowing 90 miles an hour? And we can complain about the weather. In the winter – we groan about the cold, and in the summer we whine about the heat. Don’t you love it when you see kids, completely CARE-FREE, bundling all up for winter fun, or running out, dancing and splashing in the rain? And, don’t you love it when little kids play in the summer – not paying any attention to the heat – so much so, that we have to remind them to put on sunscreen?

I’ve figured it out. Life isn’t about being concerned and worried about the storms, waiting for the storms to pass, or the winter or summer to pass – or STUFF that comes our way to pass. It’s about embracing the journey, whatever season it is, or whatever the weather might be -- and even while going through the storms of life. It's about learning how to dance in the rain, in the storms of life and in the seasons of life.

I’ve been through some real downpours in my life, and I’m here to tell you “I survived and, in fact, this gal has become quite the accomplished “dancer”. I know how to bend, and not break; I know how to do the “quick step” and I know how to “slow dance”, and, best of all, I’ve learned to depend on my Dance Partner, and how to follow His “lead”. Life Moves Pretty Fast

In the words of the great philosopher, Ferris Bueller, "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you'll miss it!"

That is so true, and unless you're my age, or more, you may not give those words a second thought now.....but give it a few years, and beieve you me, you'll understand them so much, you'll be glad you did or you will regret NOT stopping and lookind around

I'm just so thankful I come from a long line of folks who did recognize the importance of living each day as if there were no tomorrow. I remember it being a big deal for my parents to be sure to go see their elderly parents often. I remember them visiting close friends and family, regularly, and them coming to visit us. I remember our big family reunions. Those were "matters of the heart" that are still with me today.

I woke yesterday morning at 4:00 am, to get breakfast going for the gang before they headed down to the dam again to catch those early morning, hungry trout. When I went into the kitchen area, Staci was already there, had made peanut butter & jelly sandwiches for later, coffee was ready and so was she.....since 2:30 am. I told her I think she lives by John Wayne's famous words, "Daylight's a'wasting. Time to get moving!" But it wasn't yet daylight. You know you're a "red neck" when your biological clock is set to the time that fish are feeding.

I'm so proud of this girl for so many reasons, but here in the great outdoors, I see her not as the girly, girl on the outside, but I see the girl that lives out loud with every breath she breathes. She's an adventurer and outdoors-woman to the core, so just the thought of those fish being there for the taking, had her awake and ready to hit the day. You know you're a "red neck" when you sleep in your clothes....ready to hit the ground running.

We had the birthday celebration all ready to go for Payton, the birthday boy -- cinnamon rolls with a big candle in the middle. You know you're a "red neck" when you've got the cabin covered with balloons, and because there was no tape for hanging, you use the cracks at door trims, the cords from the blinds, and the cabinet door knobs to hang them all. At 5:15 am, all the fisher-boys and girls were out the door -- ready to bring in a haul of fish for tomorrow's meal. What can I say? They love my beer-batter fish!

I stayed back at the cabin to make the birthday cake and get Payton's meal request ready for their return -- that beer batter fish fry -- from our big take yesterday!

Not long after they left, Staci called me with disappointing news -- the dam gates were wide open still which meant the waters were so furious that they couldn't get the fish to bite so they returned back to the cabin for Plan B. Staci had a heart-to-heart with Lake Tenkiller's Corp of Engineers for Lake Tenkiller. She was educated on why they had to release so much water out of the lake, which halted our big fishing haul. Apparently, Oklahoma has had above normal rainfall and if they don't release the quota needed, there is potential flooding that will happen, especially, since Oklahoma is supposed to have more storms this weekend. That makes our little whining about not being able to fish, so unacceptable.

But, not to waste "daylight", Larry and Staci headed to the river behind our cabin to try to find the secret for catching fish in those heavy moving waters.....and the birthday boy with his two friends tried another fishing opportunity. The management here at the camp said they could use their bait net to go down to the river and haul in shad to use for catfish and striper fishing tonight. Then the boys and Alexia and Staci used those rushing waters for good, and decided to raft down the river. No matter what they were doing -- they weren't wasting a minute of daylight. Once again, "All thing work together for good to those who love God and are called according to His purposes." Romans 8:28.

Like Ferris Bueller said, "If you don't stop and look around, you'll miss life." Life is everywhere -- in little kids, in our loved ones and friends, in our surroundings and in everything that God made. Fishing was slower for us -- but no problem, the birds were still chirping, the waters were still flowing, and the enjoyment of each other -- laughing at silly shenanigans of the boys making spears, climbing trees, and making more memories carried on.

I overheard those three guys talking about buying a cabin and splitting it 3-ways (they're all already entrepreneurs). That's the stuff that life and God's goodness is made of -- getting great ideas, being creative, living with a grateful heart in the ups and downs, and enjoying the littlest of things that makes the biggest of things seem so trivial.

How awesome it is to "Look upoon the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living!" Psalm 27:13. So, to put John Wayne's "Daylight's a'wasting" to scripture words, "This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it!"

God's Recovery Team -- Welcome to Oklahoma -- Birthplace of the BlizzaFloodQuakeNado

It warmed up to melt ALL that big snow (about an inch) in Tulsa and tomorrow, the weather guy is forecasting 70 degrees. Since Oklahoma was our home for 38 years, I can vouch for the authenticity of this sign in the photo, as well as the distinct four seasons that could happen in a week, accompany all those weather conditions. Sounds humorous, but we’ve seen some devastating results from those conditions. During those times, we witnessed the incredible humanity and rescue efforts of Oklahoma’s citizens.

I posted about the sprinkling of snow in Tulsa on Friday. I was so amused when this Facebook Group popped up in my newsfeed. "Oklahoma Winter Recovery" -- not because of the great idea of people helping people, but having lived in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada for seven years, with its 40+ below temperatures, over 30 inches of snow, and remembering that Winter Recovery there included plugging our cars’ heaters in at night, being always prepared to shovel snow off of cars and driveways, and dressing in many layers. The City of Winnipeg was resilient in handling the abundance of snow. Their snow remover vehicles had the streets cleared long before we needed to drive to work. I was also amused that the Tulsa schools were closed on Friday. If they did that in Winnipeg, school would be out for the entire winter.

This was a post I saw under the Oklahoma Winter Recovery Facebook Group -- **At this time, please only post a new thread if you or someone else is stuck. This will help to keep the page easier to get assistance to the motorist** When posting about a vehicle that is stuck, please make sure to list the location, make and model of vehicle and at least one good phone number (either yours or the stranded motorist if you personally know them). This will help in getting assistance more easily and quickly, and this way it will be known whether or not they have been rescued already, so that someone else does not head that way. If you have Google Maps on your phone, drop a pin. This will also help determine the exact location. Be excellent. Make good choices.”

Impressive, right? Technology provides for people helping people -- and caring enough about their fellow man that they set up a place for support and help during winter storms. Isn't that the mentality and heart for having an attitude to serve and help others.

Helping others is such a great diversion from so much negavity in social media, the news and even those who are bound and determined to look at the "glass half empty". Doesn't it makesense for us to rewind, reload, and shoot some straight arrows toward targets that sincerely make a difference. Instead of being relentless to look for something else to complain about, wouldn't it be great to refocus on matters that matter? Matters like doing what we can to serve and support each other; doing what we can to “love our neighbors as we love ourselves” (Matthew 22:39); and “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” (Luke 6:31).

Just maybe our little caring "stone" could cause a ripple effect to a world that needs role models and examples of TRUE Christianity. TRUE Christianity is when our love for Christ is at the core of our life and He becomes so bright in us that we radiate that love and light to others in how we live, how we talk AND walk. So much so, that we can’t help ourselves….we see a need, we desire to meet it. We see someone hurting, we endeavor to ease the pain. We act like Him….He Who was willing to model “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:13).

Maybe it's time when we ALL could enlist for being a recruit on God’s Recovery Team!

What Storms Threaten Your Life Today? Praise Him in the Storm!

Here I am – comfy, cozy, warm, dry, safe and sound – while so many people on the East coast are reeling from the devastation of Hurricane Matthew. More tornadoes, more surges of over 9 feet, power lines down and no power for hundreds of thousands of people. And then seeing the thousands of people in Haiti, who had so little in shelter and comfort anyway, who lost what little they had.

Living in Oklahoma, where tornadoes can be abundant and seeing the loss of homes, precious loved ones lost, and then the thought of rebuilding in those areas brings trepidation – “What if it comes again?”

Sincerely, our thoughts and prayers go out to anyone in harm’s way today – whether here, there, or in places and countries of turmoil and risking their lives on a daily basis. Our awareness of hurting people becomes even stronger in times like this. And our need to pray for their peace, comfort and resilience becomes heightened.

There will always be storms in our lives. It’s predictable – whether they are from the forces of natural disasters, those that come from raging battles and wars, or from those that come from the pain of broken relationships, disappointments or the discomfort of illness and loss of loved ones. But in all those storms, no matter what comes our way, there is only one Constant that can carry us through each and every storm. We can be hope-filled conquerors because our trust is in THE SON, Who is always shining in our lives.

Last night I watched a news report where a group of people in Nassau, Bahamas, with their church destroyed, still praising God in the middle of the storm. In my own life and those who put their trust in The Almighty…..know that homes can be rebuilt, healing will come to families and life will carry on once again, because we KNOW the Prince of Peace, who brings peace and comfort and joy once again. We will carry on -- and we'll even find the beauty that is found, even in tragedy. Yes, we may not know what our future holds.....but we do know, WHO holds our future.

Maybe life seems overwhelming to you today in the storms you may be in. I've been there..... and each time that I found myself in places like that, I found my answers, my peace and my comfort in the One who is the Rock, and I realize those overwhelming circumstances were ultimately for my good....because they drew me to the Source of answers, the stable foundation, my shelter and my SOLID ROCK. I urge you to go there for your place of refuge today In Jesus' words to the tremendous storm where the disciples were reeling in fear and despair, we pray He speaks to the storms in our world today "Peace, be still". In the meantime, let's PRAISE HIM in the storm!

Remembering the Celebrations

Day 310 of Photo Inspirations -- Remembering the Celebrations
#TBT -- 2004 was such a great year.  FACEBOOK was created (Thank you, Mark Zuckerberg).   Our 5th grandchild, Brennan, was born, and we were so fortunate to be a part of a historic event at Oklahoma City University.

Oklahoma has been so good to our family in so many ways, but the most incredible, monumental gift (that just keeps on giving) was our precious Muldrow, Oklahoma daughter (I don't even admit to her being a daughter-in-law because since the first day we met her.....we knew God had given us another daughter).

Papa and I were thrilled to be invited to the festivities.  Best of all, we got to see after our new little 2-1/2 month old grandson at the event. The occasion was the unveiling of the three life-size bronze statutes of Oklahoma City University's alumni who all became Miss America winners.  It was a significant contribution by Edward L. Gaylord to make the statutes a reality.

Each of the figures is dressed in a formal gown, and a plaque is on the front giving the name of the Miss America winner, the year she won, and her hometown. Each woman wears a crown and is holding a bouquet of flowers.

The bronze sculpture is in a circular fountain that is located in the Kerr-McGee Centennial Plaza on campus, at the NW corner of Blackwelder and 23rd which is at the very far SE corner of the OCU campus. OCU has other claims-to-fame.  A star with Kristin Chenoweth's name is on the plaza in front of the Miss America sculptures. Kristin Chenowith, well-known actress and singer, is also an OCU alumnus.   Chris Harrison, seen in the photo with Shawntel, host of “The Bachelor” and "The Bachelorette,” is an OCU alumnus and was the host for the statute unveiling.  Oklahoma Mayor Mary Fallen was the keynote speaker:

1st statute (to the left) is Susan Powell, Miss America 1981, Elk City,OK
2nd statute (in the middle) is our girl, Shawntel Smith, Miss America 1996,
Muldrow, OK
3rd figure (on the right) Jane Jayroe, Miss America 1967, Laverne, OK Oklahoma

We're in the month of Thankgiving, and I just can't help it -- I have to express my gratitude for the blessings in my life.  And, I'm so grateful for Facebook that gives me the opportunity to archive, count my blessings, be on daily assignment to share positivity and encouragement, and celebrate God's richest blessings on a daily basis.  Oh, I know I don't need Facebook to inspire me to count my blessings, but it is sure a wonderful way to express THANKSGIVING.   Do you take lots of photos and make lots of memories?  If you don't, start today -- I promise you, you'll be so glad you did -- especially when you're in the 3rd Act of your play.like I am!

"For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of."  Luke 6:45  Yes, my heart is full to overflowing with thanksgiving.

Surprise! We've Got White Stuff

Day 76 of Photo Inspirations -- SURPRISE!   We've Got White Stuff!
And, thankfully, that white stuff isn't more snow -- it's our beautiful Tulsa Dogwoods in bloom.    I'll admit it!   I'm quite excited about this "white stuff" -- even as excited as I was for the snowy "white stuff" here just a couple of weeks ago. How soon the weather can change in Oklahoma. Monday, it was in the 80's -- today, the 50's. Actually, the inconsistent weather is one of the reasons why I love it here. Each new day can be full of surprises!

Speaking of surprises, I'm reading Mark Batterson's "Draw the Circle" 40-Day Devotional book and he says this: “But God always has a holy surprise up His sovereign sleeve. And when we pray, God throws surprise parties!” And it's so true. If we'll trace it back, every blessing or divine appointment or miracle that comes our way was a "set-up" by God.....because we prayed about it and just really expected that one day we'd witness His perfect timing for answering that prayer. God's Word backs this up...."You have not, because you ask not" - James 4:2. He wants to hear from us, and taking a time out for a little talk with Him is what matters to Him.

I can recount so many surprises (an unexpected check in the mail, an unexpected encounter with someone that led to great opportunity, being given something for FREE instead of having to pay for it, winning a trip, being given a car, someone showing up at our door wanting to buy one of our properties NOW, being the winner of a raffle, having a debt PAID IN FULL -- unexpectantly -- all surprises. And when one of those surprises shows up, I often look up to heaven and say, "You did that, didn't YOU? I live in the FOG -- Favor of God. Is it because I'm better, more favored or blessed than anyone else?  Heavens no!   I simply live prayerfully, and in an "expectant" mode that "Something good is going to happen to me today!"   I'malways on the look-out for God's surprises!

My surprise blessing yesterday was driving through town and seeing all of those beautiful Dogwoods in bloom. It's nearly Spring and new life is starting to show itself, and surprise us.  And,  the all-time greatest surprise?   Resurrection Sunday will soon be here when we celebrate the ORIGINAL SURPRISER showing up ALIVE AND WELL!

Are You Aboard the Titanic or the Good Ship Lollipop?

Ever run into folks who you’d think they were onboard the Titanic – they are always expecting an iceberg – dismal in their outlook on life and they refuse to be full of good cheer and great expectation?

Then, there are others, like my friend, Debbie, who continue to inspire me, and my Life Group that meets in my home each Thursday. She’s one of those who, you would think, are onboard Shirley Temple’s “Good Ship Lollipop”. Just a year ago, Debbie and John, her husband, moved from the only state, California, they’ve ever lived in. They started life over again here in Tulsa, in their business and church, and they continue to celebrate God's blessings in their life. Debbie loves babies so much (she oozes with love for them, and they know it) that she volunteers every weekend as a baby caregiver in Life Kids, and she volunteers her time during the week in the church offices. But her love for Oklahoma has taught me so much about appreciating even the everyday, simple blessings of God, that oftentimes, we take so lightly, and so for granted. Here is her Facebook post from yesterday:

"Reason #213 why I love Oklahoma: Dinner at a "trendy" Italian restaurant (yes, there are trendy restaurants in Tulsa). It was fabulous and the waitress attends the same church we do. A drive through some beautiful countryside with spectacular estates (yes, people in Oklahoma have money). Fed two friendly horses some carrots and apples just a mile from our apartment, said hello to a flock of sheep (without their wool) and saw two baby deer right across the road from our complex. Oh, almost forgot, we saved a turtle crossing the road and relocated him to the edge of a quiet little lake. Great night altogether."

Don't you just love her wit, but above all, her appreciation for things that money can't buy -- just the overall attitude of gratitude? I responded to her post: "Oh how I love how much you love Oklahoma.....and life! You are always on the "Good Ship Lollipop" and that makes me smile so much!" It sure makes me want to amp up my gratitude for the many simple blessings of life that are all around me. No Titanic for me! I'm boarding the Good Ship Lollipop, too! — with Debbie Krzych.

Is Your Home Built on Solid Rock or Sinking Sand?

We were just kids when we married (I was 17; he was 18). Funny the dreams we had back then. Often, we'd go “looking” for our dream home…. the newest mobile home models, in hopes of owning one someday. That was pie-in-the-sky dreaming back then, because my husband was a college student, and I was working my first $1.25/hr clerical job. Our “dream” changed when his uncles, who were in construction, took in a home on trade, and sold it to us. We purchased that cute little home in 1967 for $7,000. Our house payment was $67 a month which seemed astronomical at the time. A couple of years later, we sold it for $14,000 – we thought we had struck it rich! How far we came over the years of maturing, growing our family and depending on God more, as we took many more steps of faith”. And, each step continued to solidify our foundation.

In the 70s, we moved to Oklahoma, and, before we knew it, our young dreams came true. We purchased a mobile home that backed up to Lake Keystone. And, you’re probably thinking, “Are you kidding me? You bought a mobile home that backed up to the water in "Tornado Alley"?” Indeed we did. And we encountered many opportunities to stretch our faith, especially during every one of those tornados that came barreling down the lake. Thanks be to God -- we weathered them all. And with each one, whether it was a literal storm (tornado) or financial storm, or illness storm, or relationship storm, our HOME's foundation grew more solid. It was with each storm, that our HOME and our lives, became more secure and blessed.

Jesus likened the person who hears and keeps His teachings to a wise man who builds his house on the ROCK (Matthew 7:24). Not even the fiercest storm can bring it down. So I ask you today....solid rock or sinking sand? On what foundation are you choosing to build your life, and the lives of your family, today? If we want life’s truest treasures -- say "NO" to sinking sand, and say "YES" to building upon the Rock of Ages. It sure does make for a blessed, secure and comfortable home AND life!

Tough Times Don't Last, But Tough People AND Trees Do!

I set out to buy two trees for my yard. My main criteria? Hardy. A very knowledgeable tree specialist guided me to this Maple Tree (left). It would be on the west side of my home and would eventually have a great canopy from the sun, and yes, it's a hardy tree. I chose the hardy Crabapple Tree for the front yard for the maroon leaves that would match my house – I know that’s a girlie consideration, but, like my clothes, I want ME, and my house and yard, to be color-coordinated. When it was time for the nursery to plant the trees, I asked about supports and stabilizers against these Oklahoma winds. The tree specialist said, “We’ll provide stakes if you want, but we don’t recommend it. Movement of the trunk helps strengthen it by thickening it. And, trunk movement also stimulates root growth.” Well, that was good enough for me. But, in the last couple of weeks, I almost doubted my decision as these Oklahoma winds were bending them beyond what I thought they were capable of. But, they are withstanding the winds, and they are standing tall.

Robert Schuller wrote a book called “Tough Times Don’t Last, But Tough People Do”. And, in almost all cases, tough times don’t last, but people with faith and trust in their Creator, Almighty God, do! With God as our stabilizer and support, the storms of life and the prevailing winds may come, but we will withstand every pressure, every adversarial push and shove, and every brute force that could uproot us from our faith. In all those times….sure we’ll bend, but we sure won’t break!

Psalm 1:2-3 “But they delight in the law of the LORD, meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.”
