We've Got Comeback Power

Don’t look or listen now because another catastrophe, another day of record coronavirus reports, another lost life, another angry mob, another negative report is coming from the news-media world. It’s true. What a year this has been and we’re not even halfway through it yet!

I was amused when I looked at some of my New Year’s 2020 blogs – all hopeful with great expectation, God-is-in-Control, “It’s-gonna-be-the-best-year-EVER!” I must say, this one has surprised us all – in so many ways! You know the details so I won’t remind you.

But, I’m still as optimistic with the great expectations as I was at the front side of this year, because what I said then, is still true now. God IS still in control and we can still believe this can be the best year of our lives. Maybe we've had a setback -- but that's when God orchestrates a set-up for the greatest comeback ever. It's like the trajectory of an arrow that can only be shot by pulling it backwards. And maybe difficulties during this season feel just like that. But we remember -- when life drags us back, we're just getting on the launch pad toward something even greater. The greater the setback -- the greater the comeback. I mean, seriously, think about Jesus' death on the cross. It was a setback, unlike anything the disciples could have imagined. It was over for them and they hid in fear. But joy came in the morning when the greatest comeback ever took place. Jesus rose from the dead and we were the winners right along with Him. He lives to give us His comeback power!

Romans 6:10-11. "The Spirit of God, Who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, He will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you."

How About a Trip to the Desert?

Lent is the time of year when I, with purpose and on purpose, make changes. It's a personal time of interior inspection into my heart and soul…..and an exterior inspection of my body. On the exterior side, I’ve been eating like there is no tomorrow. I’ve used the excuse that I’m too busy to focus on discipling my body. “Besides, Lent is coming up and I’ll pull it together then." St. Paul, I need to take your words into my heart and soul AND body! He said, “I keep on disciplining my body, making it serve me so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not somehow be disqualified.” (1 Cor 9:27). So, I’ve started back on my purposeful strengthening and working this young body out so it will serve me and others well. I'm also honing in on better eating habits (The Daniel Fast -- all fruits and vegetables during Lent). I sure don’t want to be disqualified,

But this season is really about taking a deep dive into the journey of our Lord and Savior. It's about "coming clean". "Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me." (Psalm 51:10). It's about repentance, restraint and preparation for Jesus’ death on the cross and self-giving love that resolutely puts aside our own wants, needs, and desires in favor of obedience to God. Please don't misunderstand me when I say "preparation for Jesus' death on the cross". We're not putting Him back up on the cross. He died once, so we don't ever have to die a spiritual death. We get to do life with Him forever. We are embracing the cross for which He gave His life for you and me.

It doesn't really sound so enticing, does it? There is no party-hardy in the equation. I want my coffee and my chocolate. I want a prayer life that I instantly understand divine mysteries. I want to ease my way through Lent and life without struggles, hunger pains, worry and going to the desert. I want my needs met and my pockets filled to the brim with God’s goodness. I want world peace. And, can’t we all just get along?

But, a BIG but, what I’ve come to know – is Lent is the reminder that all this sort of thinking is, well, ashes and dust. It’s the reminder that none of THAT stuff is going to matter in the light of eternity. Lent is for focusing the mind, heart, and spirit on God and taking a trip to the desert.

That's the first thing to notice about Lent -- the desert. Jesus spent forty days in the desert fasting and wrestling with the devil. But He came out of that wrestle empowered by the Holy Spirit and His miracle ministry began. That's how I hope to come out of this Lenten season -- empowered to love greater, being a stronger, devoted follower of Christ, and shining brighter with His bright light. If we are experiencing struggles, it doesn't mean we are spiritual failures. It means we are participants in the life of Jesus and, in Him and with Him, we, too will be empowered and have great hope of sharing His reward.

Shouldn't it be Black Friday instead of GOOD Friday?

You know the feelings...you, or someone you love is hurting so much, and no one else seems to understand your pain. Maybe your closest family member just passed away, and it seems everywhere you look people are just fine -- they're laughing, they're carefree, they're going on with their busy lives, and you think, "How could life be going on when I hurt so much?"

I've been there, and I know how life can go on. It's because of this day. This is Good Friday, day that should be commemorated with thanksgiving, celebrations, and everywhere we looked were crosses adorned with neon lights, and music and bands playing and choirs singing -- and we'd see people paying homage and offering tributes about what this day means.

Good Friday -- It seems like an oxymoron, doesn’t it? How can anything GOOD come from an innocent, kind, good and loving man to be killed by an angry mob on this day? How can anyone celebrate Jesus’ death on the cross today? We can, because Jesus could have called 10,000 angels to save Him, but He didn’t. This good, good Man was willing to endure the cross for the sake of our salvation -- to pay all the debts of sin we owed. He embraced this fate because He loved us so much!

On this day, the most scandalous betrayal of justice in human history took place. Jesus wasn’t guilty of any crime or sin. After the illegal trials, this loving, giving, compassionate, caring, innocent Man was stripped and tied to a post. He was whipped and beaten -- too horrible to even imagine. He was betrayed by His friends, and spit on by countless people. He was forced to carry a wooden cross to Calvary where nails were driven through his wrists and ankles and He was left to die. He could have called ten thousand angels to his side, but He refused. Instead, He died there for you and me. He loved so we could LIVE!

HALLELUJAH! We can, and should celebrate this day that SAVED our lives….literally! THIS IS THE DAY Christ bore every sin we've ever committed, He carried every sickness we have ever had, and will have. He gave His life so that WE WOULD LIVE FOREVER and EVER! How could we be so distracted and be so oblivious to this DAY OF ALL DAYS? Never again, do we wonder if we are loved. God thought our eternal life was worth the death of His only Son. Now that's TRUE LOVE! GOOD FRIDAY! Oh, happy day! Now, let's strike up the band and shoot off the fireworks. This DAY is worth the grandest celebration -- this day marks our FREE PASS to heaven.

Remember Him on the cross today...praise Him...thank Him.... worship Him...and give Him your life today, because He gave Himself so completely for you! Then, be a part of the ultimate victory celebration when He arises on "Resurrection Sunday"!!! Good Friday really is so so GOOD!
