Can you imagine walking, talking, eating and laughing with Jesus day in and day out? I believe He had to lighten up and laugh with those misfits He called to be with Him 24/7 for three-and-a-half years. And, as we do with those we love, we have to tighten up when it comes to leading by the example of our "walk AND talk". They knew where His strength came from so of course, they asked: “Lord, teach us to pray.”
What would it be like to have an up-close-and-personal relationship with Jesus every minute of every hour of every day and experience even the most mundane details of life with Him? I thought about how in shock-and-awe the disciples must have been when Jesus kept surprising them with His tactical moves. He’d go where no Jew would go (to Samaria and visit with the Samaritan woman); He’d heal a blind man by spitting on mud and rubbing it in his eyes; He’d bring a dead boy back to life for his grieving widow mother. His ways were scandalous, reckless, mouth-dropping miraculous and, oh my goodness – He would forgive anyone from a woman caught in the act of adultery to “The Rock” (Peter) who denied Him three times. He kept on pointing out how to best handle situations in love.
Every aspect of Jesus' life and ministry is worthy of hours of discussion, yet it wasn't His preaching or His miracles that the disciples asked to be taught. We don't see one recorded time where they asked Him, "Teach us to preach or teach us to heal." After spending those years with the Son of God, witnessing His daily/nightly life, they asked Him, "Teach us to pray."
They wanted His prayer life. They connected the dots and knew that Jesus' public life of ministry was the result of His private life of prayer. He emphasized prayer. Luke 5:16 states, "He often withdrew and prayed." It was the very bone, marrow, and DNA of His life. Not only did He teach on prayer.....He prayed.
They watched Him pray, watched God, the Son, talk to God the Father through God, the Spirit. They saw the intimacy and the intensity that came from Him as He prayed, emptying Himself of all of His divine privileges, giving Himself fully to the Father.
My own desire is for that same intimacy with God. Intimacy comes from a tight relationship that comes from spending time with Him. It was the key to Jesus’ survival – even to death. We know that from the times we read “He went away to pray.”
I've begun to ask myself:" Is my life provoking others to say, "Teach me to pray like You do." I need to work on it, but rather than my prayer, I'll take the lead from our Master Pray-er and suggest you and I both to pray His way (Matthew 6:9-13):
"Our Father Who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen."
I believe it's time for us to interact more with heaven. This next generation desperately needs mothers and fathers to take them by the hand and introduce them to the most beautiful and glorious Person, training them in His glorious school that we never graduate from -- the School of Prayer.

Good Friday -- He Spoke Not a Word
That sounds almost impossible in an age when it’s all talk, talk, talk and give opinions, express angst and discontentment, and complain about this and that. Passionate defenders of their opinions shout: “Speak up if you want your voice heard!"
The prophet Isaiah gave us inside information about what this day would look like 700 years before Jesus’ birth. “He was as a sheep before the shearers Who opened not His mouth.” (Isaiah 53:7). Jesus said nothing in His own defense. Shocking behavior. He should be defending Himself.
How is that possible? It’s not for me. I have words to speak when I am misjudged or misunderstood. I want what I meant to be clear. After all, I am innocent. I am not a criminal. I am a good girl. I want to set the records straight! I’ve even become one of those passionate defenders of my opinion.
But it’s amazing. Jesus does not defend Himself. Jesus has been up all night enduring absurd trials. He's been spit at, beaten and abused. He's been lied about. Tormented. But, He never says a word. Herod saw no evidence, heard no evidence, heard no testimony, had no proof of any criminal act on the part of Jesus. Jesus was silent.
"Silence is golden" took on a whole new meaning. It was a picture of how Jesus handled adversity. Wonder how many of our arguments could be resolved by silence? 1 Peter 2:23 says “He did not retaliate when He was insulted, nor threaten revenge when He suffered. He left His case in the hands of God, Who always judges fairly.” Peter was an eye-witness and he said: “He did not retaliate.” When they scourged him, He did not retaliate. When the crown of thorns was put on His head, He did not retaliate. When they drove the nails in His hands and feet, He did not retaliate.
The litmus test for us is how we react when we're mistreated. The real test of our faith is often what we don’t do. Our "light" might shine brighter by not saying anything at all. If we want to "WWJD" it when we are mistreated, then we must think and act as He did. We'd first say these four sentences: "It’s not about me. It’s not about now. It’s ALL about God. It’s ALL about eternity." Eternity meant we were on His mind. What if "in the light of eternity" were on our mind when we react?"
Consider this. Was Jesus a helpless victim on this “Good Friday”? Let’s get real here -- He was the Son of God. He had the power to call down a legion of angels to set Him free. He only had to say the word and all of heaven would have come to His aid. But He never said that word. He was truly the Silent Savior who, having all power in His hands, decided not to use it against those who tormented Him. From the cross, Jesus saw the soldiers who mocked, scourged, and tortured Him, and who just nailed Him to the cross. He thought about His disciples who deserted him and Peter who denied Him. He was thinking about us -- who daily forget Him in our lives.
At the height of His physical suffering, He broke His silence to utter these words from the cross: "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do." Luke 23:34. Jesus asks His Father to forgive, but it is by His very sacrifice on the cross that we are able to be forgiven! Could we possibly say to OUR enemies: "I love you. I would rather die than hate you.’” That is WJD – What Jesus DID. Oh that we could follow His example daily as we ask ourselves the question "What Would Jesus Do?" WWJD, giving up our right to be right as we take up our own crosses and follow Him. I'm writing WWJD, not with chalk, but a permanent marker on the billboards of my heart on this Good Friday and I pray: "Make me more like You, Jesus. Make me more like You. Give me a heart that's filled with love. Make me more like You."

Merry Christmas! God Showed Up!
“He was here! He was here!” Kids all over the world are waking up their families with shrills and abounding excitement! The “jolly old soul” made it to their homes last night. They are sure he was here because the cookie plate only has crumbs on it. Most importantly, stockings that were hung by the chimney with care are now bulging with gifts on the floor and around the tree. I can visualize all the celebrations going on. I remember those Christmas mornings with my young children and grandchildren.
My excitement is no less exuberate in my heart as I am nestled in my sweet, little, “alone” and quiet spot by my fireplace this morning. I woke up with overwhelming joy and started singing “Joy to the world. The Lord has come!” And exclaiming “He showed up! He showed up!” What proof do I have? After all, there were no presents from Him under the tree. I know, because His PRESENCE is in my heart today. I feel Him. I sense Emmanuel – GOD WITH US. God is with ME!
Shortly, I’ll be heading over to my children’s home for Christmas breakfast and lunch while continuing our Christmas celebrations of family joy and laughter. Last night we worshipped Christ at my church's Christmas Eve service and prepared Him a room in our hearts for this beautiful Christmas Day. We will celebrate the greatest gift conceivable. Actually, inconceivable that He Who sat on heaven’s throne showed up here on Planet Earth – all because His Dad came up with a grand idea of taking heaven to earth by sending His Son to show us the way! Before His Mama's "Yes", He said "Yes" -- I'll go and SHOW UP for them! It ALL happened in a moment, a most remarkable moment. God became a man! Heaven opened herself and placed her most precious ONE in a human womb that brought Him to this side of heaven. How marvelous! How wonderful! EVERYTHING we would ever need or want, wrapped in one package.
It seems almost irreverent to think of the Son of God coming to earth. There’s something about keeping Him divine that keeps Him distant and predictable. BUT DON"T DO IT! For Heaven’s sake, DON'T! It was a Master Plan for Him to be human so that you and I have someone who gets us -- who gets our needs -- who understands our pains -- who SHOWS UP for us when we need Him most. Let Him be as human as He intended to be. Let His human example of loving the unlovely, forgiving in spite of rejection, understanding everything about us because He was one of us -- be our example to others, too. Let Him into the mire and muck of our world. That's how He showed up and that's how He "finished up". Only if we let Him in -- can He pull us out! Let Him be God with us for in letting Him be God with us -- we are never alone and never without a Savior. Let Him SHOW UP in you and your world today! Merry Christmas!

Treasuring and Making Jesus Famous
We all knew from social media that Anastasia, my friends' baby girl, made her debut Friday morning. I love her name because my Staci's name is a derivative of Anastasia, which means "resurrected life"! My thoughts went to Mary and how she "treasured these things in her heart", unlike how descriptive we are about our children and their lives. I'm guilty, as charged. Back in my day, it was word-of-mouth to alert our friends and family that our baby had arrived. Today, we even know the gestation periods of moms as they show photos of their growing tummies at 12 - 16 - 28 weeks and more. We wore full tops that kept our expanding waistlines from showing. Now it’s tight-fitting outfits that let it show, let the whole world know as the baby grows! And, the latest trends are showing photos of babies bearing a sign "One Week Old", then at one month, two months, etc. We are our babies and families' "publicity managers"! The world of social media certainly is different than Mary's “treasuring those things in her heart".
Mary shared very little about her baby, the Son of God. Dr. Luke, the writer of the Gospel of Luke, must have interviewed Mary because she was the only surviving eye-witness of those events. Only do his writings explain the miracle birth. And, very little "detail" did she give us, unlike my "many words" daily posts. I reflected on Mary’s brief explanation of her miracle pregnancy and the wonders of her baby’s birth – the angels, the shepherds, the star. I marvel at her quiet demeanor and her ability to “treasure” these things in her heart. “Mary was treasuring up all these things in her heart and meditating on them.” Luke 2:19 \
We know little of keeping things to ourselves these days – with social media that keeps us well aware of what’s going on in our lives. I know I'm not measuring up to Mary's "treasuring in her heart", especially when I post about where I am and what I’m doing and what my family is doing almost daily. Obviously, my "treasuring" is bold and in technicolor to the world.
But, in reality, how can we make Jesus famous if we simply sit and treasure Him -- keeping Him all to ourselves? Unlike Mary, who had the benefit of a host of angels and a star, we have so many extraordinary, available ways to broadcast the GOOD NEWS of Jesus. Oh yes, there are times to sit in His holy presence and treasure Him and adore Him and honor Him. But, if we don't get out of our comfortable places of "Silent Night. Holy Night" to "Go Tell It On the Mountain" -- who will be the bearers of "Joy to the World. The Lord Has Come. Let Earth Receive Her King. Let every heart prepare Him Room" to our world?
If ever a mother could exploit the exploits of her Son, Mary could have, but she chose to treasure those things in her heart. As I treasured Mary's "Yes" yesterday, I realized God was inspiring me to use whatever platforms I’m given to be Mary’s mouthpiece. She treasured in her heart because that was God's best plan for her. Now, her heart is revealed in how I can help her make her Son famous and help people fall in love with Him as I did.
I’m inspired by Mary’s quiet “treasuring-in-her-heart” ways, but in John 14:12, Jesus said "Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, the one who believes in Me will also do what I’m doing. He will do even greater things than these because I’m going to the Father." Why then, would we NOT use every means possible like books, churches, missions teams, movies, television, social media, and word-of-mouth to get the word out to make Him famous?
I hope to live my life with the same willingness of Mary. What if she had said no? What if she had rejected the opportunity to be the Mother of the Lord? But, she would have missed out on being a crucial part of the greatest story ever told! Millions of people throughout time wouldn’t look back at her life in gratitude, understanding that their salvation was made possible because she was a willing servant of the Lord. No matter the cost. Like Mary, I want to treasure each moment as Mary did, choosing to trust in God’s sovereignty, but I want to get out there in every way possible to shine the spotlight on Him and help make my Lord famous. Will you join me?

Who Do You Run to When You Need a Friend?
Today’s inspiration for this blog came from the graphic posted by my friend, Michael Beaudoin. Thank you, Michael! “The first one to recognize Jesus was an unborn child.” Here's what that line means:
Mary had just heard from Gabriel that she was going to give birth to the Son of God. Did you catch that? She was going to give birth to the “Holy, Son of God”!!! I’m not using that as slang! I’m just saying that a young peasant girl received the announcement that she was going to give birth WITHOUT relations with a man, and the clincher is: THAT baby is the Son of God! Then…. what’s a girl to do? Stay in the spot and wonder “How can this be?” “How will Joseph take this news?” “What will the neighbors think?” “What about my wedding and my wedding dress and all the plans I’ve made?” We don’t read any such questions, though she may have had them running through her mind. She simply responded to Gabriel’s message: “Yes. Be it unto me according to your word.” Luke 1:38
Back to that first photo...after hearing Gabriel’s message and giving her “yes”, Mary ran with haste to get to her cousin, Elizabeth, who had been barren, but Gabriel told Mary a miracle had taken place and Elizabeth is six months pregnant. After all, NOTHING is impossible with God! And when Elizabeth heard her greeting, her baby recognized the Son of God in her and leaped for joy in her womb. (Luke 1:39-40).
God is the world’s greatest matchmaker EVER! I’m not talking about the kind of romantic matches made online, but rather about "divine" connections made between women in need and those who can help. I have many of those connections and before I would share "my load" with just anyone, I would go to those gals who have my back and I have theirs. Those are the women I do life with. In this Luke 1 Christmas Story, God gives us a beautiful picture of what it looks like when He gives the gift of that kind of friends to help us in challenging times. Here, He joins together a young Mary, with an older woman, Elizabeth, and encourages both of them in the linking. If we’ll zoom in a little, there are some important lessons for us.
Why did Mary need to pack up and leave home to go see Elizabeth? Where was her mother? Her friends? No matter the answers, one fact is clear. Mary needed a faith-filled woman with whom she could connect. In fact, she hurried there! We live in a world where people are lonely and hurting and we know the saying "Misery loves company”. Mary could have sat at home and worried about this new startling info and turn to a nearby friend for support. But, what friend could understand THIS dilemma? She didn’t look for a friend who knew little of life to give her news to, but, Gabriel had given her Elizabeth's miracle, nothing-is-impossible-with-God story! She knew she was the kind of friend she needed.
There was such joy in their connection. The rest of this story is so beautiful that I can hardly explain it adequately. Elizabeth was elated to hear Mary’s voice and her baby boy leaped in her womb. She cried out in a loud voice, and said, “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!” Two anointed-with-the-Holy-Spirit boys were inside these women And then Mary started singing with joy and praising and magnifying God.
The outcome of these women’s connection was great joy. Not only were they happy in the moment, but they were forever enriched by the match that God had made between the two of them. God calls us to connect so we can mature. Mary was supported, and Elizabeth had a chance to share her maturity and support. That same joy can be in store for you and me! Let's connect, Girl Friends, with those who are connected by the Holy Spirit. If ever we needed each other, it is today!
Lord, thank You for giving us divine connections with others who not only encourage us in our faith, but we encourage them with your faithfulness!

His Tomb Became a Delivery Room -- Happy Resurrection Sunday!
Up until his last day on this earth, my Sweetheart and I were uncompromising and unwavering in our faith and belief that he would be healed. But on that day, I had a sense of "knowing", it was time for him to get to go home. So, on that day, I leaned in close to him and said, "Baby, I'll be okay. Why don't you push and go on home? Push, Baby, Push!" I was his Midwife, our bedroom was his Delivery Room and he did push through heaven's birth canal to his healed and whole body and life in his Home Sweet Home in heaven.
I heard a message this week about our Lord's resurrection that brought that memory back to me. The Apostle Peter said in Acts 2:24 "God raised Jesus up, loosing the PANGS of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it." That word, "pangs", is associated with labor and childbirth, so on that early "3rd Day" morning (probably 12:00 am -- God could no longer allow His Son to be in that tomb one more minute), so He must have said "It's time to get the SON up!" That tomb became the Delivery Room for the Son of God. Can you imagine that tomb was about to explode because of the POWER that was getting ready to burst forth. Notice that scripture again...."because IT WAS NOT POSSIBLE for Him to be held by it."
My Sweetheart doesn't live on this side of heaven any longer, but because of our Lord's death and resurrection, he LIVES in heaven. Best of all, our Lord LIVES, and SO DO I. I still have breath in my lungs. My heart still beats and God has brought ME back to life. Everyday is a new, bright resurrection morning, because of Christ's death, burial and rising to live forevermore. Only God can bring life out of a season of death. God just can't leave death well enough alone, can He?
Perhaps, today, you are still living in the ashes of remorse, brokenness, depression, and a tomb is holding you back. You are still alive. Go ahead and put your hand over your heart. If it's beating, God has a destiny and mission for you to fulfill. You could have been born sometime in history, but you weren't. You're here and now and the resurrection power of Jesus Christ can live big in you. Let Him turn your tomb into a Delivery Room to your new life today!
