Got Desert? Green Pastures Await You!

It’s difficult to think of desert in the midst of the torrential rains we had in the last 24-hours here in Frisco. But, deserts did come to mind when I thought about the “desert experiences” of life.

Not far from the lush rolling hills in Austin where my children live, you can find yourself in the desert. In fact, there are cacti and other desert foliage all around my children’s home. Trust me. I know. Those cactus spikes got my attention coming through my jeans when I got too close to them. But the desert areas around Austin pales in comparison to Mexico where we recently went for a family vacation. Just go for a little walk without water and you’ll find yourself dry, hot, and parched. Oh, for a cool drink of water!

The Season of Easter is synonymous with freshness, new life, springtime, an abundance of flowers and budding trees. But, all that newness means little when we are in a virtual desert spiritually. Beauty is all around, but we don’t see it or feel it. We prefer the curtains drawn and we want the world to go away. I have been there in seasons of personal drought. No matter what scriptures I read or praise songs I sang or words of encouragement that were given to me, I just wanted to wallow in a pool of self-pity. In those “seasons”, I came to realize that staying there was the worst place I could be. Or, was it?

Those dry seasons are like a thermometer. We can read our temperature and know there is something wrong. And in the desert seasons, we know there is something wrong spiritually. When we open our eyes and hearts wide, we know we’re off-kilter. We know we are not nourishing and refreshing ourselves with the Springs of Living Water. We’ve become lackadaisical in our relationship with God. We don’t hunger and thirst for Him. The enemy of our souls is mighty proud of us during those times of living in the desert. The Psalmist David knew about these times. That's why he wrote in Psalm 23 "He MAKES me lie down in green pastures to restore my soul!"

I know there are those reading this blog today who feel like you are there – right in the middle of a parched soul desert. But, I’m here to declare to you this day – your desert experience is almost over. You will soon be revitalized to achieve greater heights and a level of spiritual clarity that you have not even imagined, but it's up to you to get out of the desert. The fast track there is by refusing to live there any longer. Open wide the windows and let the fresh air of the Holy Spirit in. Refuse to live there any longer. A bountiful supply of Living Water is available to you. In John 7:37-39 Jesus cried out, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scriptures said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’” He was speaking of the Holy Spirit Who came to live in us when we first received Christ into our lives. It’s springtime and renewal time today. Run to the touch of Jesus and let His living water saturate you today! Dry spell ended, in Jesus' name!

Welcome, Spring! I’m Getting Spring Into My Step!

I've been thoroughly enjoying the photos displayed on social media of the beautiful array of bluebonnets that are seemingly opening the doors and welcoming Spring to us Texans! Thank you, God, for your handiwork! Before leaving home for this Spring Break trip to Mexico, I sent a little text message to my Frisco family that I wanted to turn in my birthday gift coupons that they gave me in August. It was an amazing gift that included power washing my screened-in porch, trimming hedges and trees, raking and bagging leaves, and laying mulch. I told them I was dealing with peer pressure because my neighbors were way ahead of me in getting their properties all spruced up to welcome Spring! So, we talked about dates to get it all done. Teamwork will certainly make my dream work!

Of course, here in Mexico, it looks like springtime year round, so that’s inspired me, even more, to get spring into my steps. We’ve been going to the fitness center each morning here and getting ourselves spruced up for celebrating this most wonderful season of new life, new hope, new dreams, and new great expectations for this spectacular soon-to-be Resurrection Sunday! Talk about NEW LIFE!

At home, the trees were already budding, my hot pink phlox was unveiling a carpet of color, and the yellow daffodils were sprouting. All of it was shouting “Springtime ahead!” Old things were passing away and the new was being birthed. I had been hearing the doves cooing in my back yard announcing they were making preparations for the new life of their little ones soon.

In Steve DeWitt’s outstanding book, “Eyes Wide Open: Enjoying God in Everything”, he explains enjoying God's presence this way:
“Creation speaks to us — every day, all the time, constantly shouting truths about spiritual reality. Did you hear it this morning as you got up? Did you feel any truth about God this morning as you took a hot shower? Did you taste any truth as you delighted in your morning coffee? Did you hear any divine reality as you heard a bird singing? Did you see any truth as you saw the blue of the sky? What have you actually felt, tasted, touched, seen, and heard today? The whole earth is filled with His glory. Every day creation shouts to us, God is glorious! God is creator! God is provider! God is love! God is there! Everywhere I look, everything I feel, hear, smell, and taste transmits the beauty of God through the beauty of creation. He is the beauty behind all beauty.”

As for me, I’m gearing up for stepping it up -- getting Spring in my step -- to be filled with vigor and vitality. God saw that His creation of man and woman was VERY GOOD. Shouldn’t we be the evidence of God that awakens Spring in the steps of others, too? The cold, dark days of winter are over. Resurrection Day is upon us. It’s time to take off our grave clothes because He lives -- inside of you and me! Of course, we need to have Spring in our steps because Romans 8:11 reminds us “If the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of His Spirit who lives in you.” So, step, Stepper, step!

Is the Coming of Spring Bringing Spring to Your Steps?

Just 7 days until it's officially Spring (March 20th). The pink tulips, the bright yellow jonquils and the bright yellow forsythia are out. The red bud trees are red budding. The creeping phlox are creeping out. And, Sunday, I came out -- outside, that is. I've been hibernating for most of this winter. What happened to Texas heat, anyway?

My walking/jogging routine came to a halt when I injured my ankle and it's been so cold outside and I've been so busy and I've been traveling here, there and everywhere. Excuses. Excuses. Excuses. I was speaking all of that to myself when I took to the streets and sidewalks on Sunday. That's when I saw the new life in the plants, trees and flowers (photos here). I realized it's time to get Spring into my steps!

My word of the day is obviously, SPRING: to move or jump suddenly or rapidly upward or forward; leap; arise, evolve, AND the season between winter and summer.

I was a greeter and held the door open at church on Sunday in spite of the 30 mph winds. I'd use cliches like "Look what the wind blew in!" "So glad you didn't blow away!" "We've got that 'wind-blown-look today, don't we?" Then a jolly fellow that had a bounce to his steps, beat me to the punch and said, "Could you turn down the wind, please?"

Did you ever hear that phrase -- a SPRING in your steps? It means we're walking with a bit of a bounce in our steps, implying that we're in a good mood or something good has just happened to us. Ever been weighed down with a heavy situation, and suddenly good news came, and you felt light as a feather? You were pressed down and weighed down, then suddenly you had SPRING IN YOUR STEPS!

This time of year helps with adding Spring to our steps and we get a fresh new perspective on life. Spring marks a new beginning. I love that it brings Easter -- the celebration that Christ lives. All of nature is renewed and it reminds me all the more of God's great love for us. Everything starts to come alive. Our world gets filled with color. Isn't all that reason enough to have SPRING in our steps?

Spring in our steps brings a breath of fresh air to those we meet and come in contact with. We have the reasons for joy and life and it should exude from us. We should be like a ray of sunshine because we have good news of a great and mighty God to share. We have some wonderful things in our lives that make us different and because of it, we should have that extra bounce to our walk. Like the birds that come singing in the Spring, we should be singing songs of praise and thanksgiving with a "Spring in our Step" everyday! With each step, we should have a smile on our face and love in our hearts! After all, WE KNOW the CREATOR of Springtime. He is our Maker and He made us with "built-in" springs that can cause us to always rebound with God’s peace, joy and love each and every day!

And God said, "You're Welcome!"

On the way to taking my boys to school, we were enamored once again by God's majestic creation. Back in Oklahoma, there are little signs that Spring is around the corner, but here in Washington, you would think it was Spring year-round. The green fir trees, the evergreens, the flowers in bloom, and the grass is green, year round. So while there's a lot of rain, the bonus is Spring-time beauty all year.

As I was speaking again of how beautiful the day and our surroundings are here, Brennan spoke up. "Nana, you know how we have to turn in artwork to our teachers every week. Well, this is what God turns in to us every day -- His amazing creation." WOW!! That scripture is clear...Matthew 21:16 "They asked Jesus, "Do you hear what these children are saying?" "Yes," Jesus replied. "Haven't you ever read the Scriptures? For they say, 'You have taught children and infants to give you praise." Indeed, out of the mouth of babes........comes praises to God.

My daughter, Staci, captured those thoughts when she wrote and sang a beautiful song called "A Portrait of God's Love". The lyrics are one of my photos for today. When we consider God, as our creator, we MUST believe in His profound love for us. He could have just painted in black and white, but His idea of beautiful is in full color. He gave us the bluest skies, the rainbows, the whitest dove, green pastures, red roses, golden sun.....YOU and ME in our variation of colors, and all for you and me. His love for us began with creation, but the epitome of His love was when He painted a rugged cross, stained with crimson red so that you and I could know the essence of His love. Indeed, everyday God turns in His artwork......and He signs it....."You're welcome!"
