God’s Grace. My Grace.

Maybe, like me, you’ve heard countless sermons and read books about grace. Maybe you know some of the “grace” scriptures by heart and can quote them to others. But my prayer is that we’ll see this word again for the first time. I think grace is most fully understood through our own experiences. Otherwise, it is just a beautiful and powerful word that describes God's unmerited favor on us. But it doesn’t have much effect unless we acknowledge that it was grace that saved the day for us. And, then, in turn, to pay that grace forward to others.

I’ve heard those grace messages and I’ve even memorized many of those grace scriptures. But what has taught me the most? My own story and the stories of others who have fully experienced grace. Grace – given to us when we deserved a failing grade; grace that opened up career doors for us; the grace of blessing us with our spouse and children. It was grace that we were spared from in that "almost" auto accident or that horrific storm. It was grace that the police officer gave us a warning ticket instead of the $250 ticket we deserved. Or it was grace that we got a $250 ticket that cured the need to speed and risk our life and others’ lives.

Think about God’s GRACE in some of our Bible heroes. Moses, whose hot temper led to murder and rebellion against God, and David, who committed adultery and murder. Then turn to the New Testament where a former traitor, SAINT Peter, leads the Church, and a former “human rights abuser”, SAINT Paul, who became the author of one third of the New Testament. Indeed, God’s grace is amazing. We can never sink so far that God’s grace will not reach us. At the same time, GRACE does not leave us there. It raises us to new heights, causes us to demonstrate that grace to others in words and actions, and that "grace that brought us safe thus far? THAT "grace will lead us home"! THAT GRACE, my friends, really is AMAZING!

It’s my prayer for you and I not to miss grace, but rather will powerfully experience the grace effect in our lives so much so that no matter what has been done to us, that we will choose grace for others. Making daily decisions of pouring out grace to others as grace has been poured out to us. Those of us who know grace, also know we need to be grateful for God’s grace in our lives and in turn, to offer His grace that is in us to others.

May this be our prayer today: Lord, I am amazed by Your grace in my life. Help me see, understand, and be overwhelmed by Your grace again, as I was the first time. Help me to no t simply comprehend Your grace, but live it and give it to others. Help me even today to extend grace to those around me at work, school, home, church, and throughout my community. Lord, Your grace is greater than my hurts, mistakes and circumstances. I am so grateful. May I be as free with grace to others – as you are to me. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

God is Good....All the Time. All the Time....God is Good.

Some years ago, the phrase "God is good, all the time. All the time, God is good" became popular. It was given in a call-and-response pattern. Our African Associate Pastor, in his beautiful African accent, begins every message he gives with “God is good!” And, he waits until we reply “All the time!” Then he says “All the time…..” And we reply, “God is good!” He also closes each of his messages with the same words. He is impressing upon us the goodness of God. And, since he came to us about five months ago, we have become more enthused as we raise our voices, with huge smiles on our faces and joyously declare those words. We love it, and we love him! And, you know what? The gooder (that really should be a word) God gets to us!

Yesterday morning I woke up with such gratitude and said “God, you’re so good to me!” Then that phrase came to my mind and as I was scrolling through my Facebook timeline, a friend posted this photo below. The message was coming through, loud and clear. In spite of everything going on in our lives -- the good, the bad and the ugly -- God is so good. It seemed God wanted me to remind us of that today!

I’m sure there are those who roll their eyes when they hear someone say that phrase – especially when they’re going through tough times. And, I’ll be honest with you, there are times when I’m thinking “What’s up with this or that, God?” and then when I say, “God, you're so good all the time", I am putting my faith and trust in Him. No doubt, there are those who look at us hands-waving, Bible-toting, energy-flailing, do-gooders and saying “God is good”, ask their selves “What nut tree did those nuts fall from?” And they may even ask “Why can’t I say that phrase as energetically as they do?”

An old song “Give Thanks” by Don Moen comes to my mind. The chorus goes “Give thanks with a grateful heart, give thanks to the Holy One, give thanks because He’s given Jesus Christ, His Son." Those words may swirl in people’s heads because they question “How can I give thanks with a grateful heart when I am going through so much turmoil? And, the Holy One? “How could He be holy and allow so much evil and corruption to run rampant in this world we live in?” I can only imagine how hard it must be for those who don’t know God and sense His great love for them that they find it hard to focus on how holy He is, but that doesn’t change the fact that He IS holy. Despite anyone’s doubts, His love endures forever and He is so understanding of all of our human doubts.

May I suggest that those of us who say “God is good all the time” have captured the heart of God and it’s not because of all of His hand-outs to us? Even when we don’t have a grateful heart because things just aren’t going our way, we can still look at the holiness of our God. The fact remains that God loves us all the time despite the doubts we all have from time to time.

Maybe today you’re struggling with giving thanks with a grateful heart, and saying “God is good all the time”, then I urge you to turn your focus on the Holy One. If you’re unable to do that, then just remember that He has given His only Son for us, despite the fact that He knew we would have doubts in His holiness. Go ahead and be human. Be upset about all the bad stuff that is happening in life but remember God’s love for you will never leave you – in fact, it will endure forever. We can all be thankful for that. God is good. All the time. All the time. God is good!

GRACE…..so AMAZING!!

GRACE is a word I’ve heard all my life because I heard my sweet Mom singing “Amazing Grace” throughout our home and I heard it sung worldwide as an anthem of praise. Why would that old song still be relevant, especially when there are so many wonderful songs of praise that are written and sung today?

My word for today is GRACE. My godson’s 16-years-old, big sister's name is Grace. One of the definitions of grace is simple elegance with refined movement, which fits our tall, slender, elegant GRACE to a tee.

I remember when we had a loan due at the bank and they gave us a GRACE-period. Then there's the tabloid article about the politicians or actors who fell from GRACE. We’ll describe a dancer as GRACEFUL and people who devote their time to the needy as GRACIOUS. Then there’s that meal-time prayer when someone says “Who will say GRACE for us?" No wonder when a foreigner tries to learn our language, they are confused about so many definitions for one simple word GRACE. But, the greatest of all definitions is the one that speaks of "Amazing Grace"– the one, saved by GRACE. That is God’s amazing GRACE -- the free and unmerited favor of God, demonstrated by His great love for us in sending His Son to die for sinners (you and me) and pay the debt He did not owe. GRACE is getting what we do not deserve.

Back to that beloved hymn, "Amazing Grace", that was written by John Newton, a former slave trader in 1772. It is estimated to be performed over 10 million times annually and has appeared on over 11,000 albums. It has been an anthem of hope and faith for generations. Why does that hymn still have such an impact? What was it that John Newton pointed out about God’s GRACE that resonates with us so strongly? It probably has a lot to do with the truth that the Apostle James expresses here: “Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.” (James 5:16). This hymn is a prayer! We pray together as we sing. We confess our need for God’s grace to one another, and look with eyes of faith to the glorious future for us who are "found". The power of this prayer-song transcends time, culture and place. I’m quite sure this song will last right on through eternity. The more we enter deeply into prayer, the more beautiful and stronger our soul becomes and we are able to resist evil and do good.

I attended a large dinner banquet at my church and one of the men at our table told how he knew he had been touched by God and received His "amazing grace" two years' ago in a dramatic way. Though he is still waiting for a liver transplant, he uses his story to speak out to young people of how he seriously abused his body with alcohol and medications. His story was amazing, but then we looked around our table, and we all realized we have our own AMAZING GRACE story of how God's grace kept us, delivered us, spared us, healed us and restored us. We are on the same road.....coming from all directions.....but we are all here to grab someone's hand and help them through because "we've been there, too". God's grace is given TO us, so it can flow THROUGH us to build others up in faith and trust in Him.

Probing and Examining

We are in the 2nd week of Lent – that time when we do a lot of introspection and examining our hearts and minds as we make our way to Easter.  However, based on this scripture:  “I, the LORD, probe into people’s minds. I examine people’s hearts” (Jeremiah 17:10), it would seem that it’s God who is doing the examining.
 
I’ll be honest with you, the last thing on my “to do” list is go to my doctor for an annual check-up. He does probing, examining, and a lot of other unpleasant tests to see what’s going on inside me.  In fact, today, I received my annual check-up reminder.  The reminder said, “As you know, regular checkups are important in maintaining good health.  Our records indicate your last exam was April 29, 2014. Please call our office to schedule an appointment.”  I shoved that reminder under the pile of mail.

But, I know I’ll relent, and I’ll make that call because I want to keep on top of any potential issues that could slow me down.

And the same is true for a heart and mind check-up.  God, the Master Examiner, is in the business of probing and examining – because He loves us so much and He wants us to maintain good spiritual health – and He wants to keep us on top of any potential issues that could slow us down from reaching our ultimate potential and purpose. He is all-knowing, so He carries a big hammer to bop us on the head to straighten us out – something like one of those Whack-a-Mole games?  Right?  Wrong!!   Actually, how reassuring it is to know that God already knows what we think and why we act and react the way we do.  He knows what's going on inside us. He knows our circumstances and He is even our greatest cheerleader – always encouraging us to keep going strong.

No, God doesn’t come at us with a big stick or a hammer to convince us to change our ways.  He tenderly and lovingly nudges us by revealing areas that need to be shored up.  He probes and shines His light on an area of weakness -- not to reveal weakness or flaws or mistakes, but does it so He can bring us into a closer and deeper relationship with Him.

Lent really is such a good time to invite Him to probe our minds and test our hearts.  God is so patient with us.  He is ever forgiving, extending his unmerited favor and grace on us.  All we have to do is open our heart to Him today.  He’ll handle all the clean-up and purifying process.  And, the best news is -- it’s PAIN-FREE, and the results are long-lasting!
