Let me take you back in time to our cattle ranching days -- a little piece of
paradise, with about 75 black Angus cattle under our care. I was the designated
"helper" when it came to vaccinating, castrating, and tagging our
young bovines. Not the most glamorous job, but someone had to do it!
One day, our four-year-old daughter, Staci, wanted to tag along. We told her to
stay in the truck and just watch. Easy enough, right? Well, not so much. No
sooner had we started the “procedure” on a young calf than Staci decided to
make her move. Out of the truck she came, marching straight toward her daddy.
But then came mama cow, who had other plans. Instead of coming for us, she went
straight for Staci, bouncing her around like a rodeo star! Thankfully, Staci
held on tight to the cow's ears, like she was riding a bucking bronco. Her
daddy quickly intervened, and Staci was safe, but the scare was real -- and the
lesson unforgettable.
That day taught us more than just ranching skills. It reminded us how important
it is to stay vigilant, not just on the ranch, but in life. The enemy is always
looking for a way in, and we’ve got to be on our guard. Proverbs 4:6-7 tells
us: "Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she
will watch over you."
Peter knew this well. He had his share of blunders, from denying Christ to
wielding a sword in the wrong way. Yet, he warned us to stay alert because the
enemy prowls like a lion, waiting to pounce on us. (1 Peter 5:8-9).
Like Peter AND my four-year-old daughter, I have had my share of blunders when
I took matters into my hands instead of placing them in God's hands. I am ever
thankful for the Holy Spirit Who whispers softly or, in many cases, when He
uses His megaphone to get through to me. Wisdom, Lord, please infuse me with
YOUR wisdom!
Let’s lean into God’s wisdom, the Holy Spirit’s guidance, and a hefty dose of
common sense. Life might try to throw us off, but with God’s help, we’ll stay
safe, sound, and right where we need to be.
"How much better to get wisdom than gold, to get
insight rather than silver!" Proverbs 16:16
