Savoring the Quiet

Our lives rarely settle into quiet these days. We get absorbed in the music on our ear pods, our eyes glued to the computer or TV screens where we are getting our daily dose of entertainment or information.

My blogs share a lot of “God-information” online. I often wonder if I am listening to way too much noise and am missing the voice of God in my thoughts.

In 2021, I was all prepared for the movers to show up and load all the boxes and furniture to take to Austin – my new place of residence. BUT a crazy ice and snowstorm came through Frisco AND Austin. All was at a stand-still!

I lost power for a few days in my Frisco home, and the quiet settled in like a blanket. And let me tell you, it was a strange kind of quiet. No hum from the fridge, no whirl of the washing machine—just the eerie silence of a world unplugged.

Even as I type these words now, I’m surrounded by the familiar sounds: the A/C humming, the washing machine swooshing, the gentle click-clack of my keyboard. We’re seldom without noise.

The kind of quiet that seemed strange to me that winter was every day in the first century. No traffic, no high tech, no hum of household appliances. That quiet would have been as natural to David, the shepherd boy, as the stars over his head.

David was no stranger to solitude in the fields watching sheep graze, miles away from his brothers’ battlefield shouts and clamoring swords.

I imagine there were days he thought, “Sheep again?” Perhaps he longed for the thrill of battle or the bustle of the city, while he spent days watching clouds drift and learning to play his harp.

He couldn’t have known then that the quiet days were forming a heart tuned to God’s voice. He couldn’t have known that the boredom, the quiet, the hours with only sheep as company would shape him into Israel’s great king, and that his words would comfort generations through the 23rd Psalm.

What David might’ve thought was monotony, God saw as preparation. Perhaps God wants us to embrace quiet. There our calling can be revealed. When we step away from the clicks, the screens, we find the space to hear our Heavenly Father.

It’s as if God Himself is whispering, “Take time to breathe. Take time to be. In the quiet, I’m here.”

Today, I am offering us sweet respite. If we’re walking and tempted to put in the ear pods, or browsing the TV for the news or show, let’s try pausing! Let’s be still and listen for God’s voice. Let’s invite God into the quiet with us. We’ll probably be surprised by what He has to say.

Because when we’re quiet, He’s still speaking. And His words? They’re worth hearing.

My Grace Needs Help

I've heard and sung about God's amazing grace all my life. Though we make mistakes and have not-nice attitudes and are weak in our faithfulness to Him and others, He loves us deeply anyway.

Grace -- His unmerited favor -- is always helping us in our weaknesses. “But He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore, I will boast more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.” (2 Corinthians 12:9)

God's grace is a beautiful and powerful word that describes how He loves us deeply ANYWAY! And, with the grace we've been given -- it is grace we pay forward to others.

Lord, have mercy! Speaking of my weaknesses, I am not challenged with my own grace. But when someone who is egotistical, boisterous, and way-too-loud-and-talkative, my peaceful feathers can sure get ruffled.

That’s when I think God is working on me more than that person because I've found myself realizing my grace isn’t even close to God’s grace. That means I need to have more “little talks with Jesus to make it right”!

I’ve heard plenty of “grace” stories and messages. But what has taught me the most? My own story and the stories of others who have fully experienced grace. An almost car accident – BUT God! An almost failed grade, BUT God! A career door opened, BUT God! Healing mentally and physically – BUT God!

Indeed, God’s grace is amazing. We can never sink so far that God’s grace will not reach us. At the same time, GRACE does not leave us there. It raises us to new heights, causes us to demonstrate that grace to others in words and actions.

My prayer is that God’s grace is what causes us to experience the grace effect in our lives so much so that no matter what has been done to us that we will choose grace for our offenders. That we make daily decisions to pour out grace to others as grace has been poured out to us.

This is my prayer today. May it also be yours: Lord, help us to not simply comprehend Your grace but to live it and give it to others. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

Unite -- NOT Divide and Conquer

I am enjoying a "united" effort as I continue to work at the voting polls with people from both sides of the aisle. Of course, we can’t speak about politics in a room filled with voters who are of different persuasions than each other.

But is it about that or is it because we respect each other and anything that could cause division among us, is of minor importance compared to what unites us.

Occasionally, we must graciously ask someone to remove their campaign hat or turn their campaign shirt inside out if it represents one of the presidential candidates. And they do so without complaints.

We ooh and awe at the little ones that come in with their parents to vote. They get a sticker that says “Future Voter”. And, when a veteran comes in, we express sincere appreciation for their service. We clap and cheer for all first-time voters.

It’s required that we represent an equal number of party affiliations to serve as clerks. But our commonality is that we are all God’s children – in various colors, religions, backgrounds and cultures. Our political persuasions may differ, but we agree that relationships matter more than politics.

When there’s a slack in voters coming in, we talk about our families and our pastimes and our loves. We bring food treats to share with each other. We treat each other with respect, disagree agreeably (and often with humor).

I think that is an example how responsible adults who don’t agree on everything, should act. To be civil. To have conversations with people who don’t think like you. If everyone thought the same, it would be boring anyway. We are loving our neighbor.

We have choices in our lives -- divide and conquer -- create a mutual enemy and lead a crusade to conquer it. Or we choose to unite. We can share commonalities – our families, children, life goals, hopes and dreams. We have two choices. I choose to be united – rather than divided.

Remember the battle cry of the Three Musketeers? "All for one and one for all"! They were about uniting -- NOT dividing and conquering. We can learn from their unity and loyalty.

As followers of Jesus Christ, not only do we strive to serve, protect, and love God, but we are also called to serve, protect, and love each other. Let’s live our faith. Let’s let people know we are Christians by our love. Let’s live our Christianity by how we love and teach others how to do the same!”

Being Light as He is Light

I saw this vehicle in Hobby Lobby’s parking lot. I’m sorry I saw it then and I apologize for showing it to you now. But this scene propelled me into my annual rant.

Ghosts, goblins, zombies, witches, and Halloween paraphernalia that “haunt” us are everywhere – in stores and yards this time of the year. Wait! Before Halloween enthusiasts stop reading this blog, please know I’m not judging anyone who celebrates Halloween! I know what Jesus said: “Do not judge, or you too will be judged!” (Matthew 7:1)

My awareness of seeking THE LIGHT and being a light has come from years of growth in my walk with Jesus. I was a trick or treater. I took my young children trick or treating. I celebrated Halloween along with everyone else. And I know there are hundreds of things worse than cute kids dressed like Dora the Explorer or Buzz Lightyear.

Most people think of Halloween as they do fairy tales: “It’s not real. It’s just innocent fun and we can stock up on treats and candy!” Satan IS real and we tend to laugh and talk about his ploys lightly when we cave to watching scary movies, reading about witchcraft, and sorcery. We “sugarcoat” the devil when in fact the Bible says in 1 Thessalonians 5:22, “Avoid every kind of evil.”

Heaven forbid that I sound like a killjoy! It’s a heart matter for me. I don’t want to rain on anyone’s Halloween Parade, but this chick prefers the “light” side. I have long removed myself from horror flicks and books about darkness that I entertained as a kid. I wondered why I couldn’t sleep at night. Well, duh?

If I find myself getting close to dark places, I look for the closest “escape hatch” that I can find. My motto scripture is “Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, THINK ABOUT THESE THINGS.” Philippians 4:8.

This Bible thumper loves sharing the good news of the One who was raised from the dead. I find people to encourage and give them hope. I use social media to communicate life, joy and peace. I want to see evil become good: “Do not be overcome by evil but overcome evil with good. (Romans 12:21)

I live in the light — on purpose. I lean toward the LIGHT – God and His Word. That’s why the scriptures are so vital to me – they’re my absolute statements of faith, peace, comfort and joy. ”You will keep him (her) in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he (she) trusts in You.” (Isaiah 26:3)

If you find yourself depressed, sad, afraid, doubting — living in those places of darkness — I lovingly encourage you to move toward THE LIGHT. Put light in your heart and home. I promise you…..you’ll find the SWEET SPOT. There’s nothing like it!

The Home Stretch

We closed out the first week of early voting with having had an incredible turnout of voters.  People from every walk of life have shown up with enthusiasm, casting their ballots with hope and purpose. And now, as we move into the final stretch, there’s an energy in the air, a hopeful anticipation that the path we’re on will lead us closer to God’s heart for our future.

In moments like this, the Bible calls us to stay focused on what’s truly good and noble. Philippians 4:8 reminds us to think on “whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable.”

If our leaders spoke this way -- lifting up, building bridges, sowing unity -- what a change we would see! And yet, no matter the outcome, one truth stands firm: God remains on His throne, faithful and just, guiding us all in His divine wisdom.

We may feel the weight of uncertainty, but let’s hold on to Proverbs 29:2, “When the righteous thrive, the people rejoice.” Every vote cast is an opportunity for God’s light to shine, a seed planted for a future led by compassion and integrity.

Hebrews 12:1 encourages us, let’s “run with endurance the race that is set before us.” This is our moment to persevere with faith, lifting each other up as we press toward the finish line.

So, as we enter this final week of early voting, let’s pray that God will guide the hearts of our leaders and our voters alike. May He inspire in them -- and in us -- the wisdom and kindness needed to bring about a future filled with dignity and peace.

God declares in Jeremiah 29:11, “I know the plans I have for you…plans to give you hope and a future.” With this assurance, we can keep our heads high, excited for the days ahead and trusting in His perfect plan.

Here’s to a week of possibility, of steadfast hope, and perhaps a few surprises that bring us even closer to a future worth believing in. Let’s finish strong, trusting that God’s will shall be done -- on earth as it is in heaven!

We’re in the home stretch so let’s finish strong, dear friends!

A Better World Starts with You and Me

The pessimist grumbles, “I could make a better world than this.”
But the optimist confidently sings, “Go for it! That’s why God put you here!”

It’s true. We’re not here just to take up space. God placed us on this earth, in this time, to make a difference. And while we can’t do everything, we can all do something that matters.

Maybe it’s as simple as volunteering, giving to a local charity, or sharing a meal with someone who’s homebound. Sometimes, it’s paying attention to the little things—like putting the grocery cart back where it belongs or picking up trash on the side of the road.

The truth is, making the world better doesn’t always require grand gestures. Small, thoughtful actions create ripples that can lead to waves of change. Just think what might happen if we all committed to one small act of kindness each day? A smile at the grocery store, a word of encouragement to a coworker, or letting someone go ahead of you in line.  These small acts of love reflect the heart of Christ in ways we may never fully realize.

Want to do even more? You can. Donate clothes to the Goodwill or Salvation Army or the Vincentian Family Center where I serve -- especially the ones you haven’t worn in years. Or take a friend to their doctor’s appointment when they’re feeling overwhelmed. Sometimes, the greatest gift we can give is simply our presence. Hold a hand. Listen. Offer a prayer. Remind someone they are not alone.

When we start seeing these moments as opportunities to share God’s love, our perspective shifts. Suddenly, every day is full of chances to bring a little more light into the world. And here's the best part: the ripple effect of your kindness will inspire others to do the same.

So, are you feeling motivated? Great! That’s exactly what this world needs: more people like you and me, willing to step up, make a difference, and shine God’s light wherever we can.

Because a better world starts right here—with you and me.

Turtle on a Fencepost

Last week we attended the funeral of a dear friend’s husband. We never met him, but what we heard and saw in stories and photos made it feel like we did know him. One of the stories we heard was about the “Turtle on a Fence Post”.

If you’ve ever seen a turtle on a fencepost, you know one thing for sure, he didn’t climb up there on his own. The truth is – the turtle was probably in a world of “HELP! I need somebody!”

It’s a tiny, shelled reminder that sometimes we all need a little help getting where we’re supposed to be – especially if we’re stuck on a fence post or stuck in mud or snow or in life!

I read the original story of a turtle on a fence post and just why he got there. Seems when a farmer plows his field, he always makes sure to look out for turtles. Even with his heavy machinery, if he were to run over a turtle, its hard shell could dull or even break his equipment.

So, when a farmer comes across a turtle in his field, rather than annihilating him, he will pick him up and carry him to the top of the nearest fence post. That way, he spares the turtle when he takes him down as the field is now plowed.

Isn’t life a lot like that? We all have moments where we find ourselves in places that we never thought we could reach. Maybe it’s a job we never thought we’d land, a relationship that’s a beautiful surprise, or a season of life that’s just so sweet.

In those moments, it’s clear -- we didn’t get there by ourselves. God’s hand is steady, guiding us, lifting us up, even when we feel slow and a little too weighed down, just like our turtle friend.

So, maybe the turtle (or you and me) are up there taking in the view, resting, or just getting a new perspective on life. How many of us could use a fresh perspective? Maybe God places us in higher places not so we can brag about the climb but so we can see more clearly what He’s doing in our lives.

And if we feel like we're not where we want to be yet, take heart! We’re all a little like that turtle -- sometimes it’s about trusting the process and knowing that even if we don’t have the strength to get there on our own, God has a way of lifting us up.

So, the next time we feel stuck, let’s remember, we’re not climbing alone, and we never know when we’ll find ourselves lifted to new heights. We trust the process while moving forward, slow and steady, while God maneuvers us to HIS plan to get us exactly where we’re supposed to be!

“Oh, the plans I have for you, “ says the Lord! Let’s trust the process!

Celebrate the Good News!

Don't you love those words, "Good News"? I remember my early years as a Christian and how difficult it was for me to share God's "Good News" to those around me.

Sure, I did my best to be a reflection of Christ's likeness in my words and deeds in everyday life, but I wasn't what I thought a disciple was -- the one who queried "Are you a Christian? Do you want to go to heaven when you die? Do you know Jesus as your personal Savior?"

Those words not only intimidated me, but they frightened me when I thought about what the response would be and how I would respond back to them. I remember my church sending us out door to door to hand out Gospel tracks and how difficult it was to engage in conversation with the people at their front doors.

Then how in the world could I be a true follower of Christ -- especially since He gave those words "Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to all creatures." Mark 16:15

As I matured in my walk with Christ, I came to realize that when I wake up each day, I AM His disciple, His messenger, and His ambassador and devoted follower as I ensure my words are kind, generous, loving, sincere and caring and my actions are those that do reflect God's love and mercy.

"Going into ALL the world" isn't just about across the oceans, but it's about the smile we offer to the cashier that can later be passed along to the weary wife, who’s grabbing lunch, and help give her the strength to hold the hand of her husband we’ll never meet as they battle cancer.

We don’t know how the kind word we speak to a friend will give her the courage she needs when she goes to her workplace and has a chance to answer the question, “What’s so different about you?”

So if we aren't being nudged to go to Africa to serve in an orphanage, it doesn’t mean our reach is any less. It’s not any less spiritual. It’s not any less filled with potential and purpose.

We serve a God who is not boxed in by time, circumstances, or geography. He is everywhere, all the time, with everyone. His work in and through us is spontaneous, thrilling, sometimes crazy, and oftentimes the most joy-filled experience EVER.

And in any given moment, if we want to know the best place to start sharing His love, all we need to do is look down at the ordinary, sacred ground right under our feet.

Everyday we have the opportunity to touch someone's heart who will in turn touch their family's hearts who will touch their communities and who will touch the world.

All God is really asking of us is our willing heart to be His hands extended to a hurting world that needs our words of encouragement and our hands of tender loving care. That is the best GOOD NEWS ever!

I Voted. I'm Glad I Did!

I did it! I voted in the Early Voting polls. I am also working in the polls. I have been blown away by the turnout of voters. I knew there would be a flurry of voters coming through our doors, but I didn't imagine the numbers would be so great!

By the way, Texans, you can early vote right through to November 1st for early voting. Tuesday, November 5th is the official Election Day. The crowds are massive so I encourage you to vote before the 5th -- which will be even greater crowds. I am so pleased to see the happy faces of so many voting early.

I haven't witnessed any grumpiness of voters because of the long lines. AND, the joy of first time voters who seem to be so proud that they can vote in this pivotal election, AND, the mamas with their babies wanting the "Future Voter" stickers ffor them to wear!

I've met some really fine people and none of whom were discussing their political persuasions. They are all pleased with the opportunity to vote on a beautiful, sunshine-filled, cool Fall day. At least we were all united and in agreement on that!

I am so proud to do my civic duty and exercise my right to vote. I truly believe I am making a difference! Really? How can my one little vote make a difference in the grand scheme of things?

Actually, voting can be a hassle. It takes time to register, learn about the candidates’ views, understand the propositions, and stand in a long line, knowing all the while that the chances my individual vote will make a difference among the thousands or millions cast are pretty much zero. So, why even bother?

I bother because my morals and values are so closely tied to my Christian faith and what God’s Word says. How can we not vote when there are such critical issues of life and death and of God’s Word taken seriously or not?

Voting confirms my commitment to stand-up for those morals and values and in so doing I get to choose who aligns or comes the closest with those beliefs. If I don’t vote I shouldn't complain or whine about anything that's going on in our country.

The fact is, I have my own opinions but I rarely voice them publicly. I choose to live "above the fray" by recalling my Mama's favorite quote "If you can't say something nice, say nothing at all!" Aligning myself with particular political figures has been a private matter for me, especially on social media.

I am a professing Christian so my primary voting guide is the Bible. I do my best not to be driven by the media, politics, or personalities, but I carefully weigh out the "heart of the matter".

I’m ready for this election to be over. It would be wonderful if the election meant an end to the rancor and tackiness. No question, there is deep down angst about the result. When we wake up November 6th, post-election, what will we see?

I have a prediction. I know exactly what November 6th will bring. Another day of God’s perfect sovereignty. He will still be in charge. His throne will still be occupied. He will still manage the affairs of the world.

Never EVER has God's providence depended on a king, president, senator or ruler. “The LORD can control a king’s mind as He controls a river; He can direct it as He pleases” (Proverbs 21:1).

No matter what happens on November 5th, remember God’s words of encouragement. “Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand." Isaiah 41:10

Integrity: The Missing Piece

With every election season, the question echoes louder: who can we trust? As I watch candidates vie for leadership, I can’t help but wonder—are they people of integrity? Wouldn’t it be refreshing to know that what they say is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?

Integrity seems to be in short supply these days, not just in politics, but in families, churches, and businesses. I remember having my own sleepless nights when something wasn’t right in my life.  I would toss and turn because I had said or done something that didn’t measure up to integrity.  Only after I faced the issue, apologized, and set things right did peace return.

The word integrity comes from the root of “integer,” meaning a whole number—not a fraction. It’s not divided. That’s the essence of integrity—wholeness, honesty, a life that’s not divided between right and wrong.

A man found a wallet full of cash while walking through a park. Without hesitation, he took it straight to the police station. When the wallet’s owner came to collect it, they were stunned to find every dollar still inside. “Why didn’t you keep the money?” they asked.

The man simply replied, “Because it wasn’t mine.”

That’s integrity in its purest form—doing the right thing, not because someone is watching, but because it’s the right thing to do.

As Proverbs 10:9 says, “People with integrity walk safely, but those who follow crooked paths will be exposed.” It’s hard to imagine how anyone can sleep soundly when their lack of integrity is tearing apart families, institutions, and even governments. Some damage is irreparable -- lives disintegrate.

Jesus taught us to “be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect” (Matthew 5:48). This isn’t about perfectionism, but about wholeness, especially in how we love and treat others—even our enemies. It’s a challenge, but real integrity begins when we let God heal our fractured hearts.

The good news? When we walk with integrity, God notices, and He’s delighted. Proverbs 11:20 reminds us, “The Lord detests people with crooked hearts, but He delights in those with integrity.”  I’m going to put ME at the top of my integrity list.  I want Him to delight in me.  How about you?

And They Became One

Yesterday was a day I’ll cherish forever—a day filled with love, laughter, and family at a beautiful venue in Driftwood, Texas. My heart is so full, not just as a proud Nana, but as a witness to the joy of two souls becoming one in marriage.

The weather was perfect—clear skies with just enough breeze to remind us of God’s gentle presence. The venue, with its sprawling oak trees and rolling hills, looked like something straight out of a country dream.

The men (Braden's brothers) stood tall in their western-style tuxedos, jeans, and boots, a perfect mix of rugged elegance that seemed to capture their personalities so well. And the bridesmaids were a picture of regal beauty!

I couldn’t help but smile at Carl, looking dapper and handsome as ever as the ring bearer. And there I was, a Nana who still gets to play -- this time as the flower girl! I felt like a child again, tossing petals with delight, each one a symbol of the love and blessings we all hope will rain down on this beautiful and precious couple.

The bride, oh my! She was breathtaking in her most gorgeous bridal gown, glowing as she walked with her dad, down the aisle to the love of her life. I had to hold back tears watching my grandson’s face as he saw his bride. It was a moment frozen in time, etched in my heart.

Family gathered close, friends stood by, and together we celebrated not just the union of two wonderful people but the joining of two families, forever entwined. The ceremony was simple, heartfelt, and deeply meaningful—exactly what I prayed for.

As vows were spoken and rings exchanged, I thought about the legacy of love that we all pass down from generation to generation. Today wasn’t just about them; it was a reminder to all of us about the sacred beauty of love.

God's presence was felt in every laugh, every prayer, every clink of glasses as the sun began to set. As Carl and I walked back down the aisle together, hand in hand, I knew in my heart that love doesn’t just unite two people—it weaves all of us together in ways we can’t fully understand.

And so, they became one. May their love grow deeper, their joy fuller, and their journey together be rich in every way.

From This Day Forward

The big day has arrived. Later today we will be celebrating the wedding of my firstborn grandson, Braden Wuerch and his beautiful fiancee, Jaclyn Marie Horob. Last night was the rehearsal dinner at Perry’s Steakhouse in downtown Austin.

What a beautiful night we had. Lots of photo opts with our precious Braden and Jaclyn and we were able to meet Jaclyn’s parents, Jim and Bea Horob, who are from North Dakota where they own a 10,000 acre cattle ranch. This was their first trip to Texas.

It was a special time of celebrating the “day before”. Always the hostess with the mostest, our precious Shawntel decorated “The Vault” at Perry’s (a former bank vault) that was turned into a romantic, warm, floral and candlelit haven.

A reel of Braden and Jaclyn’s love story in photos was played throughout the evening. Many of us spoke to them about the beauty of their love and our joys of this beautiful uniting of two hearts becoming one! It was a delightful night for making memories, as well as remininiscing this precious couple’s journey to this day.

Let’s talk about compatability! Braden and Jaclyn found each other in the body building world. I didn’t understand that world until I watched these two dedicated, determined, resilient athletes and trainers give their all to their discipline.

I have come to realize that, besides finding love, they have benefited by healthy eating and are stronger, leaner and healthier in so many ways. They have such a strong work ethic through their daily discipline.

Most of all, I have watched them grow stronger in their relationship with God and each other. Today they’ll tie the knot….officially, as husband and wife. And our family and friends will be there to cheer them on.

Like other young couples, they have dreamed about this day. These two love each other so much. You see it in their big beautiful eyes and you sense that this is a FOREVER LOVE!

Here’s to this day when they’ll stake their claim to love and cherish and hold each other from here to eternity and beyond.

Now, with great expectations they will begin their lives together. I’m so faith-filled that I believe their loving, thriving, helping-each-other-reach-their-full-potential relationship will be blessed by God.

Tonight I’ll shed a few tears — I just know it. That’s what Nanas get to do. Another rite of passage is taking place today. It will be with my prayers and my blessings. I wrote that on a little note yesterday. “Keep God at the Center of your marriage and you will go the distance together — so blessed “FROM THIS DAY FORWARD!”

Thank You, Heavenly Father, for Your blessings on Braden and Jaclyn. Please bless them in all their days with a joyful, faith-filled life, deep love, and with your peace and wisdom flowing in and through them. Through Christ our Lord, we pray! Amen!

Positioned to Hear

Ever had a phone call drop out mid-conversation, just when you’re getting to the good part? Or, been in an elevator where you’re waving your phone around like it’s a magic wand, desperately hoping for a signal?

We’ve all been there. Whether it’s a concrete building or a wilderness area, reception can be hit or miss. To get a strong signal, you’ve got to be in the right spot.

Funny enough, our connection with God works the same way. If we’re out of position, it’s like trying to hear through static. So, what does it mean to be “positioned” to hear God clearly? It starts with having an open heart and mind.

When we’re in the wrong position, our hearts get hard, and our minds close off. Maybe it's pride -- we’re too stuck on doing things our way! Or we’re scared stiff of what God might say -- afraid we’ll turn into one of those “God told me this, God told me that” kind of people.

And let’s not forget the bitterness that clings to us from past hurts, making it hard to receive anything, even God’s love. That’s the defense act of a cold heart!

But here’s the good news: God isn’t hard to reach. He’s not playing hide-and-seek with us. If we can shed the pride, fear, and stubbornness that block our spiritual reception, we’ll find that He’s been standing by the whole time, ready for a little chat any time.

God speaks in so many ways – even sometimes in a quiet “aha” moment when something clicks, other times while we’re driving down the road and we just sense His presence.

The key is getting into the position to hear Him. Turn off the TV. Put down the cell phone. Go for a walk. Or just sit still and listen. Lean in. He promises, " Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.” Jeremiah 33:3

Excuse me, I need to make a phone call! “Operator! Information! Give me Jesus on the line. Operator! Information! I need to speak to a friend of mine!” Thanks, Manhattan Transfer, for that old song and thanks, dear Lord, that we can call anytime, and You answer all the time!

Oh Happy Day!

I started my morning in a way I know I shouldn’t—scrolling through the newsfeeds. What did I see? Oh, just the usual elephants and donkeys charging into their political warzones. Ugh! It had me thinking, "Wow, what a sad time we’re living in."

But then -- I caught myself. I’m a child of God! I don’t need to let all this noise define my mood. No way, Jose'! My God is still running the show! As if on cue, the phrase “Happy Days” popped into my mind like a divine reminder. Yes! God was doing some mind-renewing right then and there.

I started humming the old tune, “Happy days are here again, the skies above are clear again, so let's sing a song of cheer again…” And you know what? That song was written to celebrate the end of World War I, a time when peace felt so far away. But peace came.

Then -- cue the flashback -- my heart started belting out “Oh Happy Day!” A song that’ll always have a special place, especially after seeing Sister Act. (If you know, you know!) I’ve even got my own memories of singing it with the Masters IV Quartet, bringing the house down with joy.

Here’s the thing: The world today? It looks a lot like chaos and confusion. Peace and happiness might feel like distant memories, especially when we flip on the news. But—God. Nothing is impossible with Him! He’s the ultimate peacekeeper, joy-giver, and life-lifter.

The truth is, what’s happening in the world doesn’t hold a candle to the happiness God gives. Psalm 144:15 reminds us “Happy are the people whose God is the Lord!” And we, dear friends, have a joy that transcends the daily grind. Thanks to Jesus, we’ve got peace and harmony forever!

There’s no denying it—life throws curveballs. But with God in control, we’re never out of control. We serve a problem-solving, grace-giving, all-forgiving, absolutely amazing God! So, why aren’t we the happiest people on earth?

When we get our hearts wrapped around the incredible message of Jesus—that God sent His only Son so we could live in freedom—we should be singing from the rooftops! Oh Happy Day! When Jesus washed our sins away, He gave us every reason to smile, dance, and sing it out.

So, let’s keep that joy alive! No matter what’s happening around us, we’ve got a reason to celebrate every single day. Oh Happy Day, indeed!

Just Take the First Step

Oh how sweet the memories of helping my children and grandchildren take their first steps.  It was an achievement for them, but even more so, it was an achievement for us.

Jesus understands children and He understands us.  He Who created water certainly knew His ability for walking on water.  Nowhere do we read about Him practicing walking on water before He walked on water.   Can you imagine the joy that He had when He took His first step on the water? Talk about great faith!  But, then there’s Peter – he had his moment too!  It’s like a baby wobbling toward their parents, eyes wide with wonder.

We don't scold babies when they stumble; we cheer them on, over and over. We are the great coaxers.  Coaxer defined is someone who pleads with someone and tries to persuade them to take a step of faith.  Then, instinctively, they say, “I can do this!”

Doubt and fear was all around Peter – the winds, the waves, the disciples who were cowering in fear, but just like that, Peter started walking on water. But he took His eyes off of Jesus and fell in those stormy waters.

Jesus didn't scold him for doubting. He reached out His hand and lifted him up, smiling as if to say, “You’ve got this, Peter!”  Peter was the only one willing to step out, to trust, to try. And even when he began to sink, Jesus patiently waited for him—like a loving parent, waiting to catch their child as they fall.

Isn’t that like our walk with God? We take a step in faith and sometimes we stumble! But Jesus is always there, ready to reach out and pull us up, ready to cheer us on as we learn and grow.

Each step may be shaky, but with each one, we become more like Him—just like Peter, who became a pillar of the church, all because he dared to take that first wobbly step out of the boat.

Maybe you’re going through a rough patch right now.  And, to consider stepping out of the boat or taking a leap of faith to do this or go there – seems ominous!  But DON’T let fear paralyze you.  The next time you feel unsure or hear the whispers of doubt, remember Peter’s courage, and more importantly, Jesus’ patience.

Let’s keep taking those steps, trusting that God is right there with us, cheering us on -- again and again!

I Choose YOU!

Remember the schoolyard days when team captains picked their players one by one. I wasn’t exactly athletic, and I sure didn’t bloom like the other roses on the bush. So, you guessed it -- I was usually chosen last. Oh, the sting of that self-pity! I’m so thankful I outgrew my lack of self esteem.

But Jesus isn’t like those captains. He came on a mission of love – one that chooses each one of us: “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son; that whoever believes in Him, will not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)

He didn’t come for the popular, the perfect, or the first picks. He came for the lost, the ones nobody else would choose. That’s you. That’s me.

Every one of us matters to Him. The world may tell us one person doesn’t make a difference, but Jesus is all about THE ONE. He crossed a stormy sea to heal a single tormented man. He went out of His way to speak to one outcast woman by a well. And He paused in a crowded street to comfort one woman suffering for years.

In Luke 15, we see it over and over. One lost sheep, one lost coin, one lost son. Jesus doesn’t just pursue the lost. He seeks the one that’s lost.

EVERYONE is valuable to Jesus. No matter how unworthy the world might label someone, Jesus sees beyond it. The religious leaders of His day were baffled that He chose to be with people considered the worst sinners. Tax collectors, outcasts, losers – all were drawn to Him. Why? Because He didn’t judge them. He loved them, cared for them, and showed them that they were worth pursuing.

Here’s a truth that still amazes me. Jesus isn’t waiting for us to clean ourselves up so He would love us. He comes after us. Jesus taught that God searches for us. Not just the worthy, but all of us. Every single one.

Maybe there’s a ONE in your sphere of influence who you know feels unloved, who feels they are no good, no value, no hope and no great expectations for their future. What if you are THE ONE God is calling to be that ONE who is Christ’s hands and heart extended?

Lord, please help us to see the ONES as you see them. May we be your voice, your hands, your feet to the ONES You see and love. Use us, dear Lord, to be someone’s ONE today!

R-E-S-P-E-C-T! Find Out What It Means to Me!

Last Friday, Carl and I ventured to Hart Elementary School in East Austin to support and encourage the Early Act First Knight program. This isn't new for Carl, as his Rotary Club sponsors the initiative, alongside Lady Amber, whose heart is dedicated to building up young minds.

Rotarian Mary Reynolds, the coordinator of the program for the Rotary Club, was there as well, accompanied by her grandson, Beau Henry. It was heartwarming to see Beau witness this beautiful ceremony. That’s Beau in the photo with Carl and me and Lady Amber. Carl has attended many of these events, which take place monthly in five different elementary schools across Austin.

We watched as pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade students sit with their individual classes on the floor. Lady Amber began by stressing the importance of respect -- for each other, their families, and their communities.

Then, each homeroom teacher gave a brief synopsis of just why that child was selected for exemplifying respect. I'll admit it was emotional for the parents, teachers and me!

When their names were called, the children receiving the "respect" honor, walked to the stage, accompanied by the cheers of their schoolmates who didn't receive an award.

Best of all, was the surprised look on the children's faces when they were surprised to see their parents come from behind the curtains to reward them with love through balloons, flowers, and signs. The joy on their faces was unforgettable.

Respect is one of the ten character traits highlighted in the Rotary program. The others include honesty, tolerance, perseverance, compassion, confidence, responsibility, service, discipline, and friendliness. Carl was wearing his rotarians' shirt.

It was touching to see the profound impact this program can have on young minds—helping to shape them into "respectable" young people. What a difference it makes for children to not only learn their ABCs, math, history and other subjects, but also to receive the "goods" that will keep making them good!

I am so grateful for the devoted teachers, leaders, and programs like this, which will surely make a lasting difference in shaping future generations.

Is this what we need to raise up a generation of kind, generous and respectable young people who will help us turn our nation into one of character and respect? What if we had programs like this for the adults in our world?

One Week from Today

Monday, October 21st, 2024!! One week from today begins early voting. Carl and I are stoked to be serving as election clerks again. It's a big deal to serve our country in a major right and privilege.

AND it's a big deal because it serves as a sweet spot for us. It's where we met two years ago. As we prepare, there’s one thing I know for sure—it’s time for us all to muster up, use our voices, and finish 2024 strong.

I'm not giving political commentary or insider analysis here. But, I am encouraging us to vote for the platform that aligns closest to God's Word. People are flawed. They have been flawed since the beginning of time. God used flawed people -- kings, disciples, and leaders throughout His Word. God's Word provides spiritual encouragement, something we’re all in desperate need of these days.

Let’s be real. This year has been exhausting. The headlines, the tension, the divisions—it feels like every day there’s something new to weigh on our hearts. And with November 5th looming, it’s hard not to get caught up in the noise of it all. The ‘He said, She said’ debates, the endless chatter—sometimes it’s too much. You might even be asking, “Where’s the hope?”

Here’s the good news: hope is just four words away—"Lift up your eyes."

When everything around us feels uncertain, we lift our eyes to the One who is unshakable. When confusion and chaos try to steal our peace, we look to the Lord, the Rock who never changes. The One who reigns over all creation is still on His throne. He’s not moved by political sound bites or the latest crisis. He is perfect light, without a shadow of darkness.

Psalm 121:1-2 reminds us, “I lift up my eyes to the hills—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.”

In the midst of the craziness of this world, let's lift our eyes and worship the One who loves us. May our hearts be lifted, our strength renewed. And instead of seeking an escape, let's find our calling in serving and loving others right where we are.

So, let's take a deep breath and look up. There’s hope waiting for you AND me, and while breathing deeply, go VOTE! Every vote counts! Yours matters! God bless America!

God Sees You – Right Where You Are

Let me ask you this: "When was the last time you glanced in the mirror and thought, "Well, there’s a masterpiece!" If you're anything like me, you’re probably more familiar with thinking, “Who is that tired person, and why do they have my face?”

But here’s the real deal, my friends: whether you love the reflection in that mirror or avoid it like it’s a bad selfie, God sees you. I mean really sees you, right where you are. Not the version of you that you wish existed — the one with all the wins, perfect hair, and no regrets — but the real you. And, best of all -- He’s crazy about you.

I know we’ve all been there -- maybe felt like we're not good enough, smart enough, or like we've messed up so many times that God’s love just can’t stretch that far. Newsflash!! God’s love stretches farther than any mess we can make. It’s not based on performance, and it certainly isn’t waiting for us to figure everything out.

Here’s the truth, plain and simple: You are His child, His masterpiece. "For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works....." (Ephesians 2:10). Yes, you, in all your imperfect, sometimes-wonderful, sometimes-struggling glory are His masterpiece.

And in case you need a reminder, God isn’t sitting up there with a scorecard. He’s lavishing love on you, just as you are. "See what great love the Father has lavished on us....." (1 John 3:1).

He loves you when you’re on top of the world, and He loves you when you’re binge-watching TV and wondering how life got so complicated.

So, what if you started seeing yourself the way God does? What if, instead of focusing on the parts of yourself you wish you could change, you focused on the fact that you are deeply and endlessly loved by the Creator of the universe? Spoiler alert: God doesn’t make mistakes, and He didn’t start with you.

You are seen. You are loved. And trust me, God isn’t finished writing your story yet. So next time you pass by that mirror, give yourself a wink and remember: you’re a child of God, a masterpiece in progress, and that, my friend, is something truly amazing.

We are God’s best work of artistry. We're not going to be God’s best work of artistry. We already are. We're already His masterpiece in Christ Jesus. Let's let this truth anchor us from here to eternity!

It's Sheer De-Light!

When I challenge myself to name things that delight me, it’s easy to come up with a list: my children and grandchildren who give me sweet hugs every time I see them. A sweet handwritten note on a little card from my husband. The overwhelming joy of a newborn baby. The loveliness of the fall season that is upon us. Oh, the delight of pumpkin-flavored coffee, and the golden and orange color schemes!

There’s a difference, I think, between something that makes me happy and something that delights me. “Delight” is stronger; I reserve it for something that lightens my spirit. Delight feels like a sudden shot of optimism and joy. It’s when something makes my soul say, “Hooray!”

That’s why it made me pause when I read this Psalm: “The Lord takes delight in His people” (Psalm 149:4). That means the Lord takes delight in me. In you. In every single one of us.

I’ll admit that a part of me struggles to believe this. Maybe there’s some bad theology from my past that gets in the way -- holdover images of God as the enforcer, the policeman, the carrier of the big stick. Don’t I need to earn God’s love? Don’t I first need to fix all the things about me that need fixing?

But here’s the truth: I don’t. God takes delight in me, right now, just as I am. AND, He takes delight in you, too -- just as you are.

What a freeing truth! We don’t need to wait until we’re 'good enough’ or ‘fixed’ enough. Our Heavenly Father finds joy in us, not because of our perfection, but because of His perfect love for us.

So, the next time we feel weighed down by those old thoughts of inadequacy, let’s remember this: God’s love and delight in us is unwavering, and there’s nothing we need to do to earn it. Let that bring us the kind of delight that makes our souls shout, “Hooray AND Yippee!”

We are Not a DIY Project

Life is full of moments when we roll up our sleeves and tackle things on our own -- kind of like a do-it-yourself project. I’ve had plenty of those projects that required the right number of nails, bolts, right sized boards, paint, etc. etc. Sometimes the project ended with giving me a sense of accomplishment. Other projects – maybe not so much!

But when it comes to our life in Christ, we realize this is not a do-it-yourself affair. We’re not left to navigate challenges, solve problems, or meet life’s twists and turns all by ourselves. The beauty of walking with God is that we never have to rely on our strength alone. He is our constant source of power, peace, and provision.

Think of it this way: God is the ultimate partner, always by our side, providing everything we need just when we need it. As we deepen our relationship with Him -- spending time in prayer, soaking up His Word -- something wonderful happens.

We begin to lean on His strength, not ours. Slowly but surely, we realize that He is our unfailing Provider, always ready to supply exactly what we lack.

Peace when the world is shaking? He’s got it. Wisdom when we’re stuck? It's His specialty. Strength for the days when we feel like we can’t take another step? It’s all there, ready and waiting for us in Christ Jesus.

So, the next time life feels overwhelming, let’s remember that we don’t have to go it alone. God is with us every step of the way. And because of that, we’ve got access to everything we need to be victorious -- joy, confidence, strength, and more. All we must do is reach out and tap into His endless supply.

We are equipped. We are empowered. And best of all? We are NEVER in this alone. Let’s just quote it again and again “In God We Trust”! That’s a promise that we can take to the bank!

How Do We Carry Our Crosses?

When we think about carrying our crosses, it can feel daunting. It’s easy to slip into a complaining mindset, especially when life throws unexpected curveballs.

Trust me, I’ve been there. But here’s the thing -- complaining doesn’t lighten the load; it only keeps us focused on the weight of the cross. So, is the way we carry our cross complaining or compelling?

I had my own cross-bearing experience recently while celebrating our one-year anniversary. There we were, soaking in the beauty of God’s creation, when out of nowhere, I broke out in a full-body rash. Yep, Covid-19 made its grand entrance into our vacation.

Quarantine and I became very familiar. Let me have just one more moment to whine. I missed the bridal shower for my soon-to-be bonus granddaughter. I missed church. I missed the joy of hugging those I love.

But, here’s the kicker -- I realized something through it all. Crosses will come our way, and when they do, we’re faced with a choice: complain or compel?

We all have crosses to bear -- some mini-size, some maga-size. Jesus carried the ultimate cross. He had every opportunity to call down an army of angels to save Him. But He didn’t. If He had, the gates of heaven would’ve remained closed, and we’d be left without hope. Instead, Jesus CHOSE the cross, and through it, we found salvation.

Suffering is universal, whether it’s physical pain, loss, heartache, or rejection. But complaining gets us nowhere. So, what if instead, we became compellers? What if we showed the world that there’s beauty in carrying our crosses, that through our trials, we’re drawn closer to Christ?

2 Corinthians 1:3-5 reminds us that our suffering equips us to comfort others. Just as Simon of Cyrene helped carry Jesus’ cross, we too can help others bear their burdens. And in doing so, we transform our pain into a testimony of God’s goodness -- a soft place for others to land in their struggles.

The truth is, God doesn’t waste a single one of our tears. Every hardship, every challenge has a purpose. And as we carry our crosses faithfully, we not only experience the blessings ourselves but also bring hope to those around us.

So, how are we carrying our crosses today? Are we complainers, dragging our feet? Or are we compellers, lifting others up along the way? If we endure and don’t give up, there are blessings waiting in due season.

Heavenly Father, please give us the grace to bear our crosses for Your glory, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Healing After the Storm

As I sit here, cozy, warm, and safe, my heart aches for those along the East Coast, who experienced the devastation left by Hurricane Helene.

Hurricane Helene left its mark, and now, with Hurricane Milton heading toward Florida, hearts are heavy with anticipation. But in the aftermath of nature’s fiercest moments, something powerful begins to happen -- restoration.

For every family that has faced loss, every home that’s been damaged or lost altogether, and every person whose life has been uprooted, we grieve with you. But we also hold fast to a hope that goes beyond the physical -- hope in the One who calms the winds and speaks peace over the stormy waters.

In times like these, we are reminded of God’s promises. Psalm 46:1 tells us, "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." Even in the chaos, He is near, offering shelter, strength, and the promise of restoration.

To all those lending a hand -- whether it’s rescuing families, offering shelter, distributing food and clothing, or simply standing by in prayer -- your work matters.

You are the hands and feet of Jesus in this moment, reflecting His love and grace to those who need it most. Galatians 6:2 says, “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ.” And that’s exactly what we’re seeing as communities come together to bear each other’s burdens in the wake of this disaster.

Though we don’t know what tomorrow holds, we do know that restoration is coming. Just as storms pass and the skies clear, healing and hope will rise again. Let us continue to stand together, to pray, and to trust that the God who reigns over the storm will bring beauty out of this devastation.

For those in Florida, know that you are being lifted up. We are with you in spirit, praying that God would guard you, protect you, and restore all that’s been shaken. And to those still recovering from Hurricane Helene, may the God of all comfort surround you and bring healing to your hearts and homes.

Our prayers today are with all those in harm’s way, whether in the aftermath of a storm, a war zone, or just battling the personal storms of life. Times like these amplify our awareness of the hurting and remind us to lift them up in prayer for peace, comfort, and resilience.

Storms are inevitable in life. They may come as natural disasters, conflicts, or the heartache of broken relationships, disappointment, illness, and loss. But through every storm, there is one constant: the SON, who shines even in the darkest of times. Because of Him, we can be hope-filled conquerors.

The Great Resolve

Winston Churchill is one of the most famous figures who spoke passionately about resolve and not quitting. In his famous speech to students at Harrow School in 1941 during World War II, he delivered these powerful words:

"Never give in -- never, never, never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty -- never give in, except to convictions of honor and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy."

Churchill’s leadership during the war was defined by his unwavering resolve and refusal to give up, no matter the challenges or odds. His speeches continue to inspire perseverance and determination to this day.

Do you have great resolve? If you do, then you know what it means to dig in your heels, grit your teeth, and refuse to turn back until the assignment is done. That’s the heart God looks for -- those who won’t give up when the going gets tough. It’s one thing to have a goal; it’s another to see it through to the end, no matter what.

For some, resolve is like that friend who never leaves your side, even when the road is rough, and your strength is fading. But if you're quick to quit, it's like you’re carrying around a paper umbrella in a rainstorm -- looks like it’ll hold, but it’s not made for the challenge.

God delights in those with unwavering determination, who stick with the vision He placed in their hearts. Those who push forward with stamina, spunk, and a no-nonsense attitude, refusing to give up when the temptation to stop whispers louder than the call to keep going.

These are the people who inspire us—those who’ve learned that God’s faithfulness never falters, and neither should we.

So, let’s resolve today to keep moving FORWARD; to never turn back. Don’t stop when it gets hard or when the finish line feels miles away. Stay the course, knowing that God Himself is cheering us on, and His promises will see us through to the end. Tough times may come, but tough people -- those with divine resolve -- don’t quit.

We’ve got this! We resolve to finish strong!
