Epiphany: The Light That Changes Everything

Today, January 6th, marks the celebration of the first Epiphany -- our Light has come! The big reveal! Jesus came from heaven to earth and was revealed to the world.

The three kings aka wise men aka magi, followed a star that led straight to Jesus. They brought gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the Christ Child.

Now, I’ve often wondered why God didn’t let a woman write this part of the story. Can you imagine the details we’d have? Matthew, bless his heart, kept it vague. When did the wise men show up? How far did they travel? Were there just three?

But I get it, Matthew. This story isn’t about the wise men at all. It’s about Jesus. God in the flesh, right here among us. The magi followed that star for one reason: God wanted them to know their Savior had come. Not just the world’s Savior, but theirs. And they fell down and worshipped Him.

Epiphany isn’t about seeking signs or traveling miles to find Jesus. It’s about knowing He’s already here. God made sure the wise men saw the Light because He wanted them to know they belonged to Him. And guess what? So do we.

Isaiah 60:1 says, “Arise, shine, for your Light has come!” That Light isn’t the flicker of Christmas lights that fade in January. It’s the Light that pierces the deepest darkness and stays with us all year long.

The wise men left changed, not because they found answers to every question, but because they met the One who is the Answer. And we can too.

Epiphany reminds us that no matter how far we’ve traveled or how much we think we know, what we need most is Jesus. And He’s not far away. He’s right here. Maybe, just maybe, God is making wise men and women out of us too. And like them, we can kneel before THE Light Who changes everything. Oh Light divine!
