WEIRD – Because NORMAL isn’t Working

That's the title of a book written by Craig Groeschel, senior pastor of Life.Church which has many U.S. satellite churches plus others around the world that use their resources. Also, from Life.Church has come the free YouVersion Bible app. Our new normal is often reading the Bible from our cell phones anywhere, any time and we can even carry it in our hip pocket!

I still enjoy my flip-through-the-pages “normal” Bible but I also enjoy the new normal of accessing my Bible app or finding scriptures I need for my blogs or my personal enrichment by simply typing in “scripture for joy; or peace; or hope, etc.” on my computer's address bar and all kinds of scriptures pop up.

When Pastor Craig wrote the book, "Wierd", he was referring to his family's lifestyle. It is one of a Christ-centered philosophy of being fully devoted followers of Christ to show people how to break out of "normal" ruts and live lives of authentic devotion to God while practicing the truths of His Word. Many folks would call that lifestyle "weird", but it's the way that has worked in my life, too. After what we've been through in the last months and even years -- I'm holding to the old normal of trusting in God's amazing grace, as well as a new normal of shifting in ways that needed to be changed anyway. Let's face it -- "normal" folks are stressed, overwhelmed, and exhausted. Many of their relationships are strained and, just surviving. So, we might as well abandon our old normal to be a little "weird", different, Christ-centered, Bible-believing,. love-dealing Christians who march to the beat of a different (but better) drum.

What have we got to lose? Oh! That’s easy to answer -- the craziness of "normal". Remember, normal, the quote goes, is nothing more than a setting on a dryer.

Many are longing for their lives to be normal again and to get back to the predictable and comfortable. But, more than likely, we will never have life as it used to be. Things will never be the same. We might as well adapt as we go and even adapt to a Christ-centered life of love and grace for our fellow brothers and sisters. It’s like changes I’ve experienced since “the good old days when chewing gum was the worst offense in school”. Really, things will never be the same. And, honestly, that may be a good thing. We shouldn’t be looking back, when we should be looking forward. Many of the changes we’ve adapted to, just might become our new normal. We have comfort in this -- one thing, rather, our ONE God, NEVER changes.

I don’t think I could say it better than the Christian music group, Jesus Culture, does in their song: “Your Love Never Fails”
[Chorus]
You stay the same through the ages / Your love never changes / There may be pain in the night / But joy comes in the morning / And when the oceans rage / I don't have to be afraid / Because I know that You love me / Your love never fails
[Bridge]
'Cause You make all things, work together for my good
You make all things, work together for my good
'Cause You make all things, work together for my good
'Cause You make all things work together for my good
You make all things work together for my good
You make all things work together for my good!”

I love that line that repeated over and over again. And, it is so true. We don’t have to have NORMAL, as it was, back again, because maybe we needed this SHIFT into a new NORMAL. We just need to keep following He Who never changes – lean on Him and trust Him to give us the wisdom and strength to advance into a new season. 2 Peter 3:14 says: “Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless.”

I Love My High-Tech Life

See that alarm clock! I remember every night's routine of winding it up to keep it going – especially so that the alarm would go off the next morning. Fast forward to today and my “Alexa” plays a comfortable sound that wakes me up!

A few days ago, I blogged about high discernment being better than high-tech. Don’t get me wrong! I’m not knocking our world of technology. Even when one of my high-tech devices goes on the fritz, doing life the good-old-days way, is a hassle. You know – the microwave, the dishwasher, etc. We are so high tech that we get whatever we need for whatever we are doing at the time -- from driving to all kinds of gadgets in every place -- the kitchen, the car, garage, music, fitness, watches. I'm so grateful to be able to move through my life with less to be concerned about – like when I drive so many miles to Tulsa or down to Austin. The technology in my car -- a GPS sytem and indicators let me know when a tire is too low or it’s time for an oil change.

I can’t imagine how long it would take me to write my daily blogs without my computer and access to the internet. The Internet has forever changed the way we relate to one another. Getting messages out to a large list of people in an instant, at one time, unlike the days of phoning all those people or snail mail. The good old days, were good, but, hallelujah, for these good NEW days when we get so much accomplished so much faster.

My little world of technology makes so much difference to me, but it's truly a miracle for those who can see now because of specialized glasses, for those who can hear because of implants, and those without limbs or even a voice have access to technology that gives them the ability to speak.

What a privilege it is to be alive today and see how many people are benefited because of man’s creation. Our Great Creator creates through His children. Every creative act is a partnership with The Creator! I am so privileged. You are so privileged. How often we take our blessings for granted. I’m impressed to consider the gifts in my life that are not available to others -- the ability to see, read, write, or have access to running water, electricity, the internet, transportation, a safe space to call home. If you are reading this blog -- you are so blessed!

God started all this “technology” business. He is the Creator of heaven and earth. He created life itself. That is who we are: Children of the Creator. This blog today is pretty basic in its message but quite advanced in us recognizing that technology is a gift from Him, our Creator, and He operates through His skilled image-bearers. It is His Genius that inspires innovators with innovations, artists with art, creators with creations AND you and me who should open up our hearts and lives to Him -- and just perhaps, we might come up with the next technology that creates something that will be used to know Him better, love each other more and glorify Him above all! Let's live with expectant, anticipatory waiting -- not listening like we are chilling in a rocking chair, but listening like we are on the edge of our seat … like we are anticipating a God-idea!

High Tech Versus High Discernment

I heard about a GPS app where parents can know where their kids (who have a cell phone) are at – at any given time. But, beware, parents! I also heard about an app that is called GPS Spoofing where the kid, or anyone, can make it look like they’re somewhere, but in reality, they’re not there at all.

My #2 grandson (in age) is 24. While I was in Austin, he told me that his mom and dad have that GPS app on their phones. I burst out laughing when he said, “I asked them to download that app because I want them to know if I’m stuck out in the middle of an ocean! It gives me security for many reasons.”

But, there are reasons for paring back on high-tech to going after low-or-no-tech that slows us down to draw upon our Most High God's HIGH abilities. Back to the GPS app that identifies where our kids are at any given moment. My mama made it without high tech. She had a “discerner” that knew what I was up to at any given time. My daughter has that “discerner” also because her kids say “Mom has eyes in the back of her head!” It’s true – those eyes are her discerner.

That sounds like the HIGHEST ability of our Heavenly Father Who offers us the Gifts of the Spirit, found in 1 Corinthians 12:10 and one of those Gifts is discernment. I’ve used that Gift for years when it comes to my children, my grandchildren, my friends and my husband. Discernment is being able to distinguish, discern, judge or assess a person, statement, situation or environment. Hebrews 5:14 it tells us it helps us discern good and evil. Oh how we need this low-tech, but high ability in our lives today – for so many reasons. We need to make decisions on family matters, political matters, employment, change of locations, and even giving wise counsel to friends. Discernment is a Gift from God and we need to have a heart-to-heart chat with God – asking Him daily for this Gift.

Discernment is not something we have apart from God. It is something we acquire as we walk closely with Him. If you’re in a struggle with one of your children or your spouse or your employer, it’s time to ask God for discernment – the wisdom and perspective for that situation. God knows exactly what’s going on. He is the Giver of wisdom. Instead of facing all the challenges and changes of life on our own, we have the Creator Himself walking alongside us. Want to know what is going on in a situation that is challenging you? Spend some alone time with God. Ask Him. Wait for His guidance. Freely He gives.

“And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment.” Philippians 1:9

Excuse Me! Could I Have Your Undivided Attention, Please?

This photo may look familiar. It should because I was in this very spot two years ago. I’m back in Tulsa for a few days that lead up to my mother-in-law’s 96th birthday on Wednesday. After my home sold two years ago, I stayed at a dear friend’s home for another six weeks because I had speaking engagements and other responsibilities here. I am back in this sweet spot and I get to enjoy this little piece of heaven again. This city holds so many precious memories, precious people, and so many favorite places to go. It’s not a vacay, but it sure is a favorite place to be.

I sat in this very spot each morning for my morning devotions when I was here before. I’d look out across this beautiful pond that my home backed up to. I received so much peace and comfort in this spot. I like to think that God also enjoyed my stay here because He got my undivided attention.

I wonder how God must feel about the lack of our attention because I get a little frustrated when I don’t receive full attention when I’m with someone. I can be having a nice conversation with someone, and then their phone rings or dings and, without even a second thought, they leave me hanging while they answer their phone or text message. Okay! I'll admit it. I've been on both sides....the one singing "All By Myself" while others were heads down in their phones and I've been the one with my head down in MY phone. What in the world? Where did our respect for others go? I'm ashamed of us!! It's time for putting those phones in another room or turning them off so we can get back to what's REALLY important -- being a sincere, caring, and respectful friend and family member.

Even worse is how disrespectful we can be to God. We can be right in the middle of sweet fellowship with Him when our phone dings and we can’t resist checking to see what that text message is all about. After all, it could be the plumber, the friend that we’re meeting later or one of our children or grandchildren who might need us. Right? But, oh so WRONG! We can be fully engaged in conversation with our Heavenly Father and our Savior Who gave His life for us and we allow ourselves to be interrupted. Sound familiar? God must be tapping His fingers on the arm of His royal throne as He tenderly and lovingly says “Excuse Me....could I have your undivided attention, please? I have secrets to reveal and plans to give you for your good.”

Just look at the object in this photo that the enemy of our souls uses to steal our alone time with our Best Friend, our Father, and our CEO? There it is, smack dab in the middle, instead of away from being a distraction to my one-on-one time with my royal guest. Jesus sat the example for us in Mark 1:35-36 "And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, He departed and went out to a DESOLATE PLACE, and there He prayed."

The Emergency Alert System

If you carry a cell phone, I’m sure you received this alert a couple of days ago. And, in case we think this was a President Trump knee-jerk decision to send out personal texts – au contraire! President Obama signed a law in 2016 that required FEMA to create a system that allowed the president to send cell phone alerts regarding public safety emergencies. They did it! It’s already used for natural disasters or missing children alerts that we can opt out of, but no one can opt out of the presidential alert system. The president has sole responsibility for determining when such alerts are to be used. But don’t check your text messages expecting to hear President Trump’s opinion on Judge Kavanaugh’s confirmation process or other news. The presidential alerts can be used only for national emergencies.

My, how far we’ve come. In a matter of seconds, everyone who owns a cell phone can receive a message that could save our lives. I’m thankful for warning systems. The dashboard lights in my car, smoke detectors in my home, even the little bumps in the road that let me know when I’m crossing over into another lane. If there’s any device or object that’s able to warn me of danger or impending catastrophe, I want it working for me.

In the Lord’s perfect design, we are equipped with a warning system to keep us from danger and harm. Pain is a warning system. When we first experience that pain, it may not feel like a blessing, but it’s really a gift from God. We know something is physically wrong when our body hurts. But more than that, pain is God’s way of protecting us. Maybe it’s as simple as needing to drink more water, get more rest, making better food choices, and/or getting into some fitness routines.

From a spiritual perspective, we have another built-in warning system – our conscience. Just as pain warns us of physical danger to our body, our conscience warns us about the potential threat to our morals and values. Our conscience alone can’t save us. It’s merely a warning device. And unless it has been guarded and trained, it won’t be able to alert us to spiritual danger. A malnourished, confused, and underdeveloped conscience won’t be able to protect us. In fact, it could actually lead us to immorality and regrets.

Yesterday I talked about training our spiritual muscles. That training can be applied to training our conscience like our physical and spiritual muscles. It needs to be developed and protected and sharpened. Living a life of freedom, joy, peace, hope, and love is possible and that’s why God made sure to give us such amazing warning systems. My Mom’s famous line was “Let your conscience be your guide”. Those were her parting words when I went out with my girlfriends or boyfriend. Those words served me well as they were loud in my ears and kept me on the straight and narrow path. May we heed God’s warning signals and alerts.

Never do we want to ignore His warning system. It’s his love call and his love language. He loves us too much to leave us.

Regaining Focus in a World of Distractions

My word for today is DISTRACTION: a thing that prevents someone from giving full attention to something or someone else; interruption, disturbance, interference, hindrance

This post today is longer than my "usual" long post (yikes!) but this message impacted me so much I just had to pass it on -- almost verbatim. My pastor started his message with these words from an anonymous author, but worthy of acclaim because of its significance to us and our world today:

“Satan called a worldwide convention. In his opening address to his demons, he said, “We can’t keep the Christians from going to church. We can’t keep them from reading their Bibles and knowing the truth. We can’t even keep them from biblical values. But we can do something else. We can keep them from forming an intimate, continual experience with Christ. If they gain that connection with Jesus, our power over them is broken. So let them go to church, let them have their Christian lifestyles, but steal their time so they can’t gain experience with Jesus Christ."

"How shall we do this?" his demons shouted. "Keep them busy in the non-essentials of life and invent innumerable schemes to occupy their minds," he answered. "Tempt them to spend, spend, spend, and borrow, borrow, borrow. Persuade the wives to go to work for long hours and the husbands to work 6-7 days each week, 10-12 hours a day, so they can afford their empty lifestyles. Keep them from spending time with their children. As their families fragment, soon their homes will offer no escape from the pressures of work!"

"Over-stimulate their minds so that they cannot hear that still, small voice. Entice them to play the radio or CD player whenever they drive. To keep their cell phones, TVs and their computers going constantly. This will jam their minds and break that union with Christ. Fill the coffee tables with magazines and newspapers. Pound their minds with the news 24 hours a day. Invade their driving moments with billboards. Flood their emails and mailboxes with junk mail, advertisements, sweepstakes, and every kind of newsletter and promotional offering free products, services and false hopes."

"Give them Santa Claus to distract them from teaching their children the real meaning of Christmas. Give them an Easter bunny so they won't talk about his resurrection and power over sin and death. Even in their recreation, let them be excessive. Have them return from their recreation exhausted. Keep them too busy to go out in nature and reflect on God's creation. Send them to amusement parks, sporting events, plays, concerts, and movies instead. Keep them busy, busy, busy!"

"And when they meet for spiritual fellowship, involve them in gossip and small talk so that they leave with troubled consciences. Crowd their lives with so many good causes they have no time to seek power from Jesus. Soon they will be working in their own strength, sacrificing their health and family for the good of the cause. It will work! It will work!"

"It was quite a plan! The demons went eagerly to their assignments causing Christians everywhere to get busier and more rushed, going here and there, having little time for their God or their families and friends. Having no time to tell others about the power of Jesus to change lives. The question is, has the devil been successful at his scheme? You be the judge!"

Pastor Rudy went on: “In today’s readings, we saw that Jesus was busy casting out spirits, then He went to Peter’s home to heal His mother-in-law, and then He met the crowds. It was a busy day. The next morning, He went to a solitary place to pray. It must have been away because the disciples told Him that the people were looking for Him. Then He traveled through Galilee. You always see Jesus drawing away from the crowd to go and pray; to wait on the Lord, to develop His relationship with His Father. Do we remember why Jesus was here in the first place? Do we remember where there is fuel for our daily tasks? He is God who gives strength to the weak. He will renew their strength. Why did Jesus go to the synagogue every week? Why did He go to quiet places to pray? Why did He withdraw from the disciples? Because that is what helped Him keep on track and to receive His strength."

Then, Pastor Rudy referred to men in our church who went on a three-day retreat to get away from DISTRACTIONS so they could focus on God. He went on…..”Why did 35 retreatants sacrifice time away from their family and 34 team members spend months preparing for this retreat? Why are we so committed to ACTS (the retreat name) at this church? Because if we get this right, then we will be better men, husbands, fathers. These men got it right. They are heroes to their families and to us. They followed the example of Christ to get away from the DISTRACTIONS to renew with God.

Following that message, he went on to say, “Now. I want to talk to you about these men who went away on the ACTS Retreat this weekend. They went away to be with their band of brothers to spend time with Christ – to draw closer in their relationship with Him. These men are heroes to their family and to us. They followed the example of Jesus because after Jesus had ministered and prayed for the sick and fed the multitudes and raised the dead, you will find in scripture that He needed to get away to pray. The priority of Jesus’ solitude and silence is everywhere in the Gospels. It’s how He began his ministry. It’s how He made important decisions. It’s how He dealt with troubling emotions like grief. It’s how He dealt with the constant demands of his ministry and cared for his soul. It’s how He taught His disciples. It’s how He prepared for important ministry events. It’s how He prepared for His death on the cross. Jesus’ solitude is how He went deeper in His love-relationship with God. Our men, this weekend, followed Jesus’ lead. Won’t you follow as well?"

At the end of that message, the entire congregation applauded the message and our heroes AND God, who is speaking to us all about DISTRACTIONS that are robbing us of what's the most important ATTRACTIONS -- our families, our friends, our own physical well being AND our God. As my pastor said, "It's time to get it right!"

Remembering to Write It Down

It's just too busy in this world for us to just rely on our noggin to remember it all. And to add to it, the older we get the tendency is to forget even more.....especially some really important things.....things that matter, like a birthday of a close friend, picking up a child at school, a doctor's appointment, that very important phone call or THE GROCERY LIST and having to go back to the grocery store because we forgot that MOST important item! I know that not remembering is a condition that is also the product of too much busy-ness and too much mind-overload. I understand the value of writing down my experiences. I've kept a journal for years, but now I go a step further, I carry a notepad with me all the time.

I jot down those things I think about that I need to get or to do...eventually. I even keep a notepad by my bed at night – just in case I think about something in the middle of the night that could keep me awake if I didn't write it down. I also use my cell phone to keep my calendar -- yes, this girl has a busy schedule.

Even if I wasn't a writer and blogger, I would want to be constantly prepared for that inspiration that comes just at the drop-of-a-hat . I don’t want to miss those moments, because I have missed some and just thought I'd remember them, but because I didn't take the time to write it down, it left me high and dry! But I've wised up, even when I'm driving. My cell phone has a memo recorder on it, and now, I'll record a thought or an inspiration....and whoa la -- eventually I had the subject of my post, blog or teaching just waiting for me.

So carry that notebook, put a pad and paper next to the bed, and record or jot down those inspirational moments that could be part of "your story" someday. I'm always encouraging mamas and daddies to journal those cute little stories of their kids. I promise you, you'll want to recall them back to them someday. I know that neither you or I want to regret those unwritten, forgotten inspirations and joys.

Wouldn’t it be better to take a moment, write it down and then someday tell an incredible story on a talk show about how inspiration hit you on the 405 and BAM -- the greatest novel ever? Write that down, because when that day comes, REMEMBER it was ME that told you.....and I'll say, "You're wecome!"

The Expert in Anything Had to BEGIN

Ever look at someone and wish you had their talents or abilities or strengths and just wish you had even a portion of what they have? They, too, were at their beginning.....they had to learn; they had to spend hours developing their gifts; they had to be willing to be trained, they had to grow.

I became a pilot, a pianist and organist, a teacher, a securities broker and a real estate broker -- not to mention all the other things I've gone on to do -- because of training, studying, practicing....and determination, And, now, I've gone on to become quite accomplished in the world of technology.

Several years ago, I bought a cell phone that did it all -- talk, text, email, photos, music, internet, games. The nice guy at AT&T set it up for me. I was a happy camper -- ONLY $150 a month for my phone and service. But then, two years ago, my son created a social commerce company, Solavei to lower the cost of commerce and make it even profitable. I was excited to switch my mobile service to Solavei ($100/mo savings) and help people save, too. And in so doing learned more in this world of technology. Now, I am often the AT&T guy -- helping my friends and family get set up on Solavei -- and the best part, it also meant a $100/mo savings ($1,200 a year) for me -- not to mention, thousands of people have joined my network so I even have residual monthly income coming in. Who would have thought that this Nana would be competent in this world of technology? No one, including myself, but I was willing to grow, to be trained, to develop my gifts and to learn. I often laugh at myself when I'm talking about APN settings, MVNO, bandwidth, CDMA vs GSM, etc.

And what about you? What have you stretched yourself to become and do? God planted seeds inside you for you to cultivate and grow. Sure it may take hours and hours of training -- but isn't that what we did as youngsters when we began to read and write and learn arithmetic? Why would we stop now? Let's continue to take leaps of faith to become the best we can be! It comes with great reward. Now, let's wake up those seeds and cause them to GROW, today!!

His Sheep Listen to His Voice

Funny cartoon -- but, the message is clear and VERY real to our lives. Jesus said, "My sheep listen to my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:" (John 10:27) . Wonder if He had in mind how difficult "listening for His voice" would be in 2014? And, more than ever, we really need to hear His voice. We need His wisdom, comfort, guidance, peace, and direction. Of course, we long to hear His voice, but in the busy-ness, the clamor and the many, many activities and distractions of everyday life, oftentimes, we may be hard-pressed to find that quiet PLACE where we can go for solace, rest and peace, and hear the voice of our Shepherd. And, even when we manage to find that place, "noise" -- our cell phones, iPods, radios, computers, TV, etc. -- keeps us distracted from hearing our Shepherd's voice.

Seems that it's time to find that place where His voice comes through loud and clear to us. Oh, He has that place -- and we can find it, but it's up to us, to disregard the distractions to "Be still -- to hear and know our God." And, I'm not referring to a far off island in the middle of no-where. It's possible to find that place, if only for a few minutes in our day, to "Come away with Him"!

What if everything we're needing -- the decisions we need to make, like, what job should we take; what school our kids should go to; what diet or fitness routine we should be on; what part of town we should live in, etc. All of these answers, and more, are found and answered by our Shepherd -- He Who knows everything about everything. After all, if...."The Lord is my Shepherd, He promised, I would never want......", then maybe we need to "tune-in" to our Shepherd, and "tune-out" what's NOT!
