Is it a Heart Condition or a Condition of the Heart?

Sitting quietly, I noticed I could hear my heart beating. Thump, thump, thump – perfect rhythm, but loud and clear. I told my eye doctor and my family practitioner about it and both advised me to see a cardiologist – just to be sure there wasn’t something out of order. Now, mind you – I’m not prone to doctor visits, but I heeded their advice. Thankfully the two tests – a carotid doppler and an echo showed no concerns except a little plaque build-up. She advised me to eat less red meat, avoid saturated fats and get plenty of exercise. I’m taking her advice! And, as for hearing my heart beat ❤️❤️❤️ I’m taking it as a way to have better rhythm with this built-in metronome inside me. 😉

More serious to me than a physical heart condition, is the condition of my spirit aka my heart. You know, the heart that is pure and merry (like a good medicine) or we let down our guard and negative thoughts and attitudes show up that can cause a build-up of wrong thinking in our heart. No matter if everything is A-okay on my pumping heart, if the heart of my inner man is harboring grudges, fears, anxieties and concerns – then I have a condition of my heart that REALLY needs to be tended to.

It starts with a regular check-up. The cardiologist advised that I should come back in two years for a heart check-up to be sure all is well. As Christians, we need regular "heart" check-ups too. We can go through all the motions of being a devoted follower of Christ, but if our attitude-indicator (our heart) reveals "heart issues", then we’d best be doing something about it.

King Solomon in Proverbs 4:23 said it best: “Above all else, guard your heart, for it determines the course of your life.” Notice that it says, we need to guard our heart. Sounds like a full-time job because the wily enemy sneaks in when we least expect it with his evil tactics. But, never fear -- because the GREATER ONE partners with us with a shield of peace. And, peace is sure what we need to set us on the right course for our lives.

Philippians 4:7 says "And the PEACE of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." That is why we need regular check-ups. It may look like a friend, spouse, or children are giving us a hard time and the angst is building up on the inside of our heart – but in reality, it’s the tactics of the enemy who steals the peace in our hearts. But, when we apply the PEACE shield, our hearts are protected. Aw! Sweet peace that is like a the medical procedure that opens up blockages for better blood flow to the heart.

God always provide us with ways of succeeding in this life. His peace is a guard for us. "No peace. No God. Know God. Know peace." No question -- it can be a work out because we don't know when and what will come up to steal our peace. That's why partnering with the Holy Spirit will keep our heart right as we pray prayers like this: “Create in me a clean heart, oh Lord, and renew a right spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10.

Oh the rewards for having a pure heart! Matthew 5:8 says, "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” What is the condition of your heart? Maybe it's time for a Holy Spirit check-up! God knows our hearts, and most importantly, He has our hearts that are surrendered, pliable, and tender toward Him -- He Who gave His heart for us.

Loving our Neighbors as We Love Ourselves

I’ve been here at my Austin family’s home for over two weeks now. Here’s the bonuses of being here:
1) Breathtaking views of Austin’s Hill Country from their back patio – perfect for a morning of holding hands with God and His creation.
2) Hanging out with the critters.
3) Going make-up free and even coiffed-hairdo free.
4) Being on the elliptical equipment to do my 4.5 mile workout each day.
5) Eating out of their pantry and refrigerators.
6) Wearing jeans and a t-shirt or my work-out clothes.

But, if someone were coming over or I was invited over to someone’s home or taken to dinner (I have been several times), I gussy up, coif my hair, put on a little spray cologne and wear an attractive outfit. After all, I want to dress for success. Actually, I’m loving both sides of this girl – the no frills and the dolling up. I love me – both ways. I love who I have become in the process of loving God with all my heart. It’s taken many seasons to get me to this self-assured season. Remember Jesus’ words to the lawyer: “Love your neighbor as you love yourself!” (Mark 12:31).

But there ARE those times when I allow myself to feel “less than” when I see you younger, flawless, smoother complexions, trim figures, silky hair and wearing shorts that show off your legs especially when, these days, the spider veins in my legs remove all desire for shorts or a swimsuit. There’s all kinds of strange “wisdom bumps” (as my dermatologist calls them) appearing in even stranger places. But, here’s the truth of the matter. We need to stop beating ourselves up for the way we look, be it extra weight around our middle that we call “our spare tire” or whatever our imperfection obsession might be and start loving the body God created especially for us. We are the only make and model of us on planet earth! One-of-a-kind!

While I’ve been here, I’ve taken to the elliptical equipment in the fitness room, doing 4.5 miles daily (76.5 miles for the 17 days I’ve been here). It’s great exercise and good for the body, mind, and soul. AND, the most important, is the quiet, alone time with God and me that builds up the inner me which is the most important, for sure.

We can’t love our neighbors as ourselves if we don’t know how to love ourselves. When we focus on feeling imperfect on the outside, we lose focus of how far God has brought us on the inside. Besides -- I have a feeling our outside isn’t as bad as we think. We have a purpose and we have a calling and we can’t walk in any of it if we can’t see beyond the mirror. We’re all on this journey together and seeing beyond ourselves is a wonderful way to travel.

No matter what we’re struggling with, God is bigger. I need to remember that the next time I get another "wisdom" spot. When we feel defeated by our imperfection obsessions, Jesus is right there to help us overcome those woe-is-me feelings. When the enemy tries to sell us a load of lies, let’s don't buy it! I know that’s easier said than done, but there’s nothing sweeter than trusting God in our human frailties and darkest moments. Let’s look at ourselves the way God sees us and say goodbye to our struggle with imperfection. God sees us through the sacrifice of Christ, and that is more perfect than anything we could ever hope for. We truly can surrender all the pieces of our life to the One Who made us and the One Who gave His life for us.

Lessons I've Learned From Buddy

Who would have thought that Buddy (my grandson's Australian Shepherd) and I would have become pals, since, after all, I'm not really a dog lover. In fact, when Payton first got Buddy, he put some of Papa's favorite cologne on him so that Nana would like him. Yes, that was appealing. LOL! Now, I've actually learned some valuable lessons from him? This post today is for folks like me and those who truly love their pets.

Each morning Buddy and I head out for our walk/run which of itself has been a great reason to rarely miss a day of getting exercise. In just a few days I'll be moving to my own home and I'm sure I'll miss him as my walking companion. It seems each day I learn valuable lessons from him. We’ve all heard the saying “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” I just never thought that the roles could be reversed and that my friend, Buddy, would be teaching me.

Lesson One -- Restrictions are Good. Buddy and Emma (the Yorkie) the friendly dogs at the Wallace's, are kennel trained. They don't sleep with the humans here and they go to their kennels when we leave the house. Thus, no sleep disturbance in the night, and no messes or damages in the house when we're gone. I've seen those FB photos of dogs tearing up a house while their owners are away. Kennels are a great alternative! That's a great lesson for those who are getting a new puppy -- in my opinion, kennel training just makes good sense for the puppy and its owners. This note isn't for those who "LOVE" their pets so much that they enjoy their sleeping companionship and the "open to roam" in their home policy. But, like the restrictions placed on our furry friends, we need restrictions that hold us to safe, successful and peaceful living.

Lesson Two -- Stay Active -- Yesterday, Buddy was ecstatic, as usual, to head out for our walk. He actually goes somewhat ballistic until I get his leash on him, because he's so very excited. But, alas, I coudn't find the leash so I had to put him in the backyard to save my life from his over-abundance of joy! I finally found a camera case strap and made it work for a leash. Oh that we would be as exhuberant to get physical exercise and activity. We can learn a lot from our active canines by adding physical activity into our own lives. We can go for a walk, a swim, a bike ride, or even just climb some stairs. If Buddy could speak, he would probably tell us that being active is his greatest source of energy and joy.

Lesson Three -- Have Playtime -- Buddy loves to go out in the backyard to play a game of catch or fetch. He'll bring the tennis ball to me as soon as I go out the door with him. He loves running and retrieving it immediately, then he drops the ball at my feet and waits for me to throw it to him again. Thank goodness for the ball fetcher because I sure don’t like handling the slobbery ball when he brings it to me. Maybe it’s time to organize a game night – maybe break out that old hula-hoop out of the garage or play tag with a child or even break dance! We are never too old to inject a little playtime into our lives, and to rediscover many of the joys we felt as a child.

Lesson Four -- Do a Little Digging for Buried Treasure – Though the Wallace pets have been taught to not dig in the yard, they would sure love to if they could. Too often in life, we give up when the going gets tough, or we fail to dig deeper than the surface. Our dogs know that the best stuff sometimes lies beneath the surface, so why not keep digging? When we are initially put-off by meeting a new person, we can often find a great friend by digging deeper. When we have a disagreement, trying to find the root of someone else’s opinion can help us to find connection and compromise. And when we encounter a problem at home or work, being creative and digging deeper can lead us to exciting and unexpected solutions.

Lesson Five – Bond With Others – On our morning walks, Buddy and I will encounter lots of dogs in other yards, barking like crazy and defending their territory. Buddy was leash trained, so he looks at them like “What is your problem?” I think, if he could talk, he’d tell those dogs “Let’s make love – not war!” LOL! While dogs will sometimes growl at other dogs, if given the opportunity, they can teach us about the importance of bonding with others. As busy adults, it’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day hustle and bustle, forgetting to make time for loved ones. Interaction with others can be a much-needed source of joy. We don't have to go it alone. Reaching out to a friend, or making a new friend, can truly make a difference in that other person’s life. And, spending time with others can be the first step on the path to making a difference in our lives.

Lesson Six -- Enjoy Eating -- Dogs don’t just eat their food; they enjoy their food! My Sweetheart taught this lesson to me. He would be the last one at the table because he ate so slowly as he savored every morsel of food. On the other hand, I scoffed mine down with the intention of wanting to get the kitchen cleaned up so I could have down time the rest of the night. Now, I look back and think “I wished I would have enjoyed my mealtime more with him. Life can be so busy sometimes that we forget to slow down and enjoy exactly what we are doing. Food doesn’t have to just be a source of energy; it can also be a source of pleasure. Now I realize, I should steal a page from Buddy’s playbook, and take the time to savor my meal — even if I’m going it solo!

Lesson Seven -- Run to Greet Those You Love – Hang Out With Those You Love -- There is something so wonderful about coming home to those dogs so excited to us. And, even just sitting down, and they just have to nudge in as close as they can to us. So why don’t we do this for each other? Appreciating the people we love and care about isn’t just something we feel, it’s also something we do. And what better way to show someone you care than by greeting them with a big hug or a kiss when they arrive home? And, what better way to show our love to someone, by getting as close as we can to them when we’re watching TV or just sitting down to relax. As adults, it’s easy to take our relationships for granted. But dogs know that every time you see someone you love can be just as exciting as the first. Remembering this can only strengthen our relationships.

Lesson Eight -- One of the most important lessons we can learn from a dog is to live in the moment. Dogs don’t have some big master plan. They aren’t worried about the past, and they aren’t terrified of the future. They live right here in the present moment. This canine mentality is truly a joyous and positive way of living our life. Stop to smell the roses. Let’s close our eyes and breathe in the fresh air. Let’s put our phone down and fully experience where we are. Maybe we should stick our heads out the car window with the wind blowing in our faces to remind us to live in the present.

Thanks, Buddy, for being such a good friend and teacher!

Are You Draining Fast?

Day 42 of Photo Inspirations -- Are You Draining Fast?
This is my cell phone showing the new app that I added to help me save on my battery.  It helps me to keep my phone at optimal power….and all I have to do is to occasionally check it.  See all those apps on the right?   They are the power drainers and the app optimizes my phone by closing down those apps that are consuming the power.

That made me think about this amazing human computer that we are, and how God designed us for optimal performance – just like how Samsung manufactured my Galaxy Note 2 with optimal performance.  But as with my phone being overtasked… so do this bodies that God gave us.

Those power drainers that we face on a daily basis are the alarm clock not “alarming” and we’re late for work or an appointment, having to deal with traffic or a cranky co-worker or family member or the messy house or the to-do lists that we hardly get started with.    All these things are DRAINING us fast – and we need to go to a place of peace and quiet to recharge and optimize ourselves again.  What if we’re running at an unhealthy pace that doesn’t allow us to stop and consider our actions and reactions?

Without a doubt, our days are filled with energy drainers, but just like me putting an app on my phone to help save the battery, we need to do that for our physical bodies.  I found an article in WebMD that talked about the biggest energy zappers that keep us from optimal performance:
1. Too much sugar
2. Caffeine -- keeps from getting a good night's sleep.
3. Exercise (Too Little or Too Much)
4. Dehydration -- we need water to keep our energy up.
5. Lack of Sleep
6. Bad attitude (In changing the way we think and act, we build an attitude force so strong that it will attract favor, opportunities, people, and dreams into our existence).
7. Clutter and Disorganization = being lethargic and lacking in energy and optimism.
8. Not Enough Food
9. Stress & Conflict -- try meditating, taking a walk, or breathing deeply and slowly.
10. Saying "Yes" too often -- Do you tend to do things that fuel you? Or do you find that most of your time is spent on activities that deplete you?

As for me, I rely on the battery charger of meditating on God’s Word that gives me energy and light.  I go to a place of refuge – of peace – away from the hustle and bustle – to the place of comfort and strength when I'm feeling drained.  It takes discipline to be still enough for the “full charge” to be back into my battery – but I have found that in doing so, I am good for handling all those applications until I need to re-charge again.
