Saving the Ones We Love the Most

We all have inbred instincts to save the ones we love the most. We are passionate about making sure our babies don’t touch a hot stove and they look both ways before crossing a street. We ensure they wear their coats in the cold winter days and we apply sunscreen in the blistering heat of the summer. We would go into any burning building to save their lives from a devastating fire, or into the water to save them from drowning. But, what kind of true grit do we possess for our children and grandchildren that will save them from the enemy of their souls?

I hear parents express immense concern about the negative influences their children may encounter in school, on social media, the entertainment world of screen and music, and particularly the divisive, hateful rancor of negativity that many people display. Parents wonder how their children will grow up with purpose, dignity, integrity, respect, and self-esteem when THAT and THOSE are their influencers.

But, really, WHO are their most significant influencers? The fact is there is no one or no-thing that should ever supersede a parent’s responsibility and their own leading-by-example. Let me speak boldly here. Your children will learn to love or hate, be respectful or disrespectful, wise or foolish, not by the character of their friends’ families, or those pseudo families they watch on TV or Hollywood, but by the family in their house. May I submit to you that your sons and daughters will be far more influenced by their teachers, coaches, 4-H, FFA, scouts or church group leaders? I don’t feel my character was molded by those in public office or in the entertainment world, but I did learn respect, hard work, and generosity from my Dad and perseverance, faith and resilience from my Mom. My Sunday School teachers, Vacation Bible School leaders and Christian Camp counselors modeled to me how to relate to the God of the Bible in my everyday life.

Actually, should those in the public spotlight conduct themselves in an honorable way with utmost integrity? Absolutely. However, it is not the responsibility of the President, Oprah, Dr. Phil, Miss America, the NFL, or the neighbor next door, to set the example of moral conduct. It is not the government’s responsibility to ensure children have a good example. It is our responsibility, as American citizens and Christians, to ensure that we lead our youth in modeling what is right, good, honorable, and true. One good, God-fearing, respectful football coach can do far more to shape the hearts and minds of teenage boys than a professional athlete. If we want to make a difference, let’s stop worrying about the moral example of others and let us take an active role in our classrooms, churches, youth groups and programs, sports teams, and their other extracurricular activities. Being cheerleaders, advisers and overseers of God’s gifts (our children and grandchildren) is our calling and mission. Those children are our gifts from God and what we do to instill a love for God, their fellow man and country is our gift back to God.

“Friends and fellow Americans, your success as a family -- our success as a nation -- depends not on what happens in Washington D.C., but on what happens inside your house.” I pray these wise words of Barbara Bush will resonate with us. Our nation has always and will always depend on the moral fiber of our families, nothing more, nothing less. God bless, America, and may America bless God!

There’s Just Nothing Like a Good Hallmark Movie

Okay! I love seeing one of the latest action movies at the theater with my kids, but, for the most part give me a good Hallmark-type movie any day! .

When I’m in Austin, and when I’m not doing laundry or another household chore, I’ll sit down with my grandsons and watch TV with them. It’s usually something from one of the Disney or Nicklelodeon channels. But when they are off doing something else, from time to time, I'll watch one of the Hallmark movies that I’ve recorded. Sometimes the boys will watch them along with me. Hallmark movies are romance, family or comedy and the endings are always good and predictable – and they’re all G-rated. Sometimes they get a little “mushy” which makes the boys “ugh and yuk”, but it’s never in questionable taste.
I left Austin on Monday to return home to Frisco and I got this text message from Shawntel: “I just cracked up! I am bringing Bryson back home from math and he says to me “I have been watching too many Hallmark movies! But I really like them!” LOL!

I’m in this season of life when I don’t want to watch negative news reports, shows that use poor language or have any questionable scenes. That’s why I like a Hallmark movie now and then, as well as reality competition shows. At this mature age, I do my best to pass along some insights that I've learned from my own mistakes along the way. This scripture from Philippians 4:8 speaks volumes to those of us who care about what we see and hear, and what we put into our minds and hearts: "Whatever things are true, whatever things are honest, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of a good report, if there is any virtue and if there be any praise, THINK on THESE THINGS!!!"

I know that I must sound like a “goody two shoes”. I looked up what that means. The definition of a goody two shoes is a person who always does everything right and always follows the rules, so much so that it becomes annoying. Well I’d like to think that I always do everything right and follow all the rules, but that is so not the case. I sure do make an effort to get better at my choices today than I did in the past. I know that I've found the sweetest, purest thoughts and attitudes are what bring me the most peace. I remember when our kids were "PG" ages and we took them to see "Jaws". Ugh! We love the ocean, so why in the world would we take our family to see a movie about sharks that would create fear and concern when we went to the ocean? We lived and learned.
There are people in my world that have the tendency to speak negatively and even use profanity in their conversations. I don't want to be rude, so I tolerate it when I can. But, when I have a choice, I choose to walk away. I was pleased to hear my son say they took the boys to see a movie recently and had to walk out because of so much profanity. I thought, “Way to lead those boys by example!”

I sincerely pray that God keeps my heart so pliable that situations, movies, and conversations that don’t measure up to God’s “whatever things are lovely and a good report”, that I’ll walk out or walk away. My measuring stick is God's Word.....so this "Whatever things are lovely" scripture.....pretty well states my case.....and my position on living in a sweet place of peace that passes understanding!

Happy Mother's Day

On this Mother's Day, I'm so thankful for my angel mom (on the right, Edna Pearl Wheat -- she's in heaven's grandstands cheering me on), and my dear mother-in-law, Lydia Wuerch (still going strong at age 93) -- two women that have been such amazing role models in faith and life, to me! Most importantly, these two "best friends" prayed together, strategized and conspired for our "match made on earth and in heaven". We definitely had an "arranged" marriage -- one that was arranged by these two, and arranged by God. I honor both of these two Godly women who knew God's plans long before we did. Their wisdom ran deep in their lives and in mine. My deepest thanksgiving to God for His handiwork through them!

And, I am so thankful for these two precious girls that God blessed me with -- my Staci Wallace and my Shawntel Wuerch. I have such respect from them as incredible Moms who diligently pour themselves into their kids -- leading by example -- in word AND deed. The greatest gifts they gave to me are my precious grandchildren who call me "Nana"! AND, I'm so grateful to be Mom to these two amazing men that also call me "Mom" and who fill me with so much joy as they celebrate their beautiful wives and my precious grandkids each and every day.

I'm saying "Happy Mother's Day" to them, and to all you beautiful and precious mothers out there today!
