When Everyone Plays, We All Win

This photo on the bottom left is one of my favorites. It was taken four years ago in Suncadia, WA when my two youngest grandsons, Bryson and Brennan, were ages 8 and 10. Here we are in Austin, TX four years later and they granted my wishes for a “nana” photo opportunity before heading out to church yesterday morning.

I treasure the rare "brotherly love" moments in both locations. Not rare in the sense that they really love each other, but they are, after all, two normal boys that can easily get on each other's nerves if their buttons are pushed just right! But when push comes to shove, these two would be there for each other. No question. We all need each other – REALLY NEED each other for pats-on-the-back, high 5’s, accountability, encouragement, and especially praying for each other.

An X-Box commercial aired in December and was played last night as a Super Bowl ad. The true story is about two 9-year-old Texas boys who met in kindergarten and have been best friends ever since. Their friendship was captured in the Microsoft commercial where Owen, who has a rare genetic disorder called Escobar Syndrome that causes him to have tight joints and muscles plays with an adaptive controller. Owen has had 33 corrective surgeries to correct his ankles and knees and a lot more on his spine. Microsoft heard about the boys and put out the commercial that shows Owen's friend and other children from the neighborhood coming together to rally behind Owen as he plays a video game with the adaptive controller. He wins and the kids cheer for him as he stands up from his wheelchair to dance with his friends. We deemed it our favorite Super Bowl commercial last night. “Rejoice with those who rejoice.” (Romans 12:15)

Bottom line, each of us can be better because of someone else's influence. God purposefully created each of us with special gifts and insights. He made each of us with a need for each other. Despite our many differences, we have so much in common:
Each of us is God's child, made in His image.
Each of us wants to love and be loved.
Each of us has hopes and dreams.
Each of us has talents and gifts.
Each of us has joys and sorrows.
Each of us is a work in progress. (Please be patient with me -- God's not finished with me yet!)
Ecclesiastes 5:9-10 "Two are better than one...if one falls down, his friend can help him up."

God intended us to be “better together” -- caring for each other, reaching out to those in need and loving them — with our words, our time, and our resources. We are not meant to be alone. Truly, we are better together.

No Man is an Island, so Why Try to be One?

My Austin family recently acquired four more goats to add to the family's five goats, making it now a 9-member herd. One of the new goats was a loner from the start. He didn't hang with the rest of the herd and stayed at least 20-feet away from them. The family kept trying to bond them all together, but that one just wanted to go-it-alone. When they went out to feed them on Thursday, that one straying goat didn't come in with the rest and when they found him, he had been attacked by what they think was a mountain lion. A proper funeral and burial were given by the family with a gravesite covered in stone. No matter the species, it's not easy to deal with a loss in the family.

Remember the story in the Bible of the shepherd pursuing that one little lamb that strayed from the others? He left the 99 to go after that one who was also a bit rebellious and a loner. That shepherd knew that little lamb could fall in a pit or be prey to a predator. (Luke 15:4). God created the animal kingdom to be together and the human kingdom to be together. We all need each other. We need each other for caring, tenderness, hugs, touch and emotional support; connection, sharing love, learning and growing emotionally and spiritually; companionship — sharing fun and laughter, play, adventure and everyday life; for having each other's back. We thrive when we feel connected and supported by each other, and we suffer when connection and support are not available. We had these needs as babies and we never lose them.

King Solomon spoke to that in Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 "Two are better than one because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his friend. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken."

Like that precious little goat, some of us prefer to be loners and go-it-alone. But that's not what God planned for the human race or the animal kingdom. I’m sharing this today because I’m thinking about those who prefer to be alone for one reason or another, but the fact is, we need each other.

English poet, John Donne penned those words: "No man is an island", which paved the way for that beautiful song:
"No man is an island. No man stands alone.
Each man's joy is joy to me. Each man's grief is my own.
We need one another. So I will defend each man as my brother, each man as my friend.

I love my independence, and, particularly, this sweet season of life that I'm in. But, independence isn't what God called us to. We need each other. He didn't call us to live on islands by ourselves or to roam by ourselves. We are here on this earth, at this time, and this place, to touch others and affect others by our actions and our words. We should be INTENTIONAL with our daily interactions. Every time we walk out our door to this world, we are carrying the LIGHT to brighten our world and other people's lives with God's love and peace. We can leave an imprint on every person we meet -- even in a small way -- but, nothing is small in God's sight when we allow His light to shine in and through us. We just might be a difference maker for someone today! So, let's get out of that "island mentality", and get on the "crowded places mentality" -- where we get to rub shoulders with others, and perhaps our LIGHT will rub off on them and they will start "shining", too!

It Takes Two

It Takes Two
I've loved seeing this framed photo in the guest house every day since I've been here. Those are my two youngest grandsons -- Brennan & Bryson. I've especially relished the beautiful landscape and the rare "brotherly love" moment. Not rare in the sense that they really love each other, but they are, after all, two normal boys that can easily get on each other's nerves. But when push comes to shove, those two would be there for each other. No question. This picture is a perfect backdrop for this "It takes two" scripture.

We all know some not-so-fun-to-be-around folks. Case in point -- there was a guy that I knew, bless his heart, that had a propensity toward negativity. Honestly, at one time, I avoided him every chance I could, because he was "wah wah Debbie Downer" most of the time. Trying to "light up his life" was a work-out. Then one day, I went in for the jugular and said, "Do you realize how pessimistic you can be when there's just so much to be thankful about? Don't you know that we can make this world a better place by having good thoughts and saying good things?" There, I said it and I was waiting to get an ear-full, but to my surprise and delight, he recoiled and proceeded to apologize to me and, word has it, that he has become a better version of himself. Rather than avoiding him, he just needed someone to tenderly help him see who he had become, and help him see who he could be.

Bottom line, each of us can be better because of someone else's influence. God purposefully created each of us with special gifts and insights. He made each of us with a need for each other. Despite our many differences, just look at what we have in common:

Each of us is God's child.
Each of us wants to love and be loved.
Each of us is made in the image of God.
Each of us has needs — body, soul and spirit.

John 15:12 "This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. "Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends."

Seriously, God intended us to truly be “better together.” We have to care for each other and look at the whole (instead of just ourselves). We have to reach out to those in need and love them — with our words, our time, and our resources.

Instead of walking on the other side of the street or avoiding those cranky souls, just maybe God will use us to help them. We are not meant to be alone. We need each other. No one is better than another. Truly, we are better together.

Two Are Better Than One

My photo inspiration today is my two youngest grandsons -- Brennan & Bryson. I knew someday I'd get a caption for it. Today is that day.

"You mean the world to me and my life just wouldn't be the same without you." How's that for expressing gratitude for someone in our life?
