This weekend was one for the memory books. We celebrated my dear Carl turning 80 — and oh, what a celebration it was! His daughter outdid herself: a gorgeous cake made by Pavla, beautiful hors d’oeuvres, a buffet fit for royalty, and a room filled with over 55 friends and family. Carl was the gracious guest of honor — part stand-up comedian, part wise man, and fully loved.
The next day we gathered again — this time at church and then lunch at Steiner Ranch overlooking Lake Travis. Carl was “king” once more as the piano player serenaded him with some of his favorite songs. But it was a tiny, unexpected moment that stole my heart.
I passed a young couple with the cutest baby girl, and I couldn’t help but stop. “She’s eight months old today!” they said proudly. Without missing a beat I grinned and replied, “Well, my husband is 80 years old today!” Cue the laughter and the sweetest photo ever: bright-eyed baby girl meeting gentle, smiling Carl.
Notice how she placed her little hand on Carl's hand. Be still my heart! <3
Eight months. Eighty years. Two lives on the same timeline — one just discovering the world, the other with decades of wisdom, faith, and joy.
That moment brought to mind 1 Peter 2:2: “Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation.”
Remember the old Got Milk? commercials — celebrities rocking their milk mustaches, encouraging everyone to drink more? Peter was doing his own “Got Milk?” campaign — not for calcium, but for the soul.
He knew what happens when we’re spiritually undernourished: we get cranky, fearful, and worn thin by life’s battles. But when we take in the pure milk of God’s Word — daily, steadily — our faith grows strong enough to face the fiery darts of worry and doubt.
Whether we’re eight months or 80 years, we never outgrow our need for God’s nourishment. We all need His Word to grow strong and stay steady -- no matter what age or season we are in!
Got Milk? Spiritually speaking — drink up!
