What to Do When We Don’t Know What to Do

I know so many of us have been in a quandary during these many months of the pandemic. “What do I do next?” “How can we make it?” “What can I do to make ends meet?” “Who can I go to for help?” Those questions were even more emphasized when my niece’s daughter broke the news to us that her mom had several strokes last week, with an emergency brain surgery yesterday. Bless her young heart – she felt the weight of the world on her shoulders for her mom. She said: “Tbh, I am very scared. I am scared for my mom’s well-being. I am scared about finances. I am scared about her future. I just feel like I don’t know what to do. So please pray, light candles, send good vibes, or whatever you do to cultivate positive energy, because she needs it, my brother needs it, and I need it."

I reposted her words, contacted our closest family members and, oh my, my beautiful social media friends and family went into immediate prayer-mode for her. I was so blessed to see the way-over-one-hundred messages telling me that they were praying. What a comfort that brought us – to know when the battle is raging, there are troops of prayer warriors who pick up their swords and shields for us.

I loved Roxie’s honesty about her fears AND her resolve. She knew what to do – call in prayer partners and prayer warriors – anyone who would stand in the gap with her. My memory kicked in when a similar message came to my own family years ago. We received the call from my husband’s doctor with the diagnosis from the tests: “You have Stage 4 Renal Cell Carcinoma that has metastasized to a tumor that is impinging on your spinal cord. It’s a life or death matter. You must have immediate surgery or you could be paralyzed.” The doctor was insistent on aggressively moving forward. So what do you do when you don’t know what to do? The answer is: PRAY. We prayed for God’s wisdom, His strength, His guidance, and most of all, His peace.

At the same time, we were making faith declarations: "Our God, our Healer. You are our Prince of Peace. By Your stripes, we are healed. We trust in you, Father God. We will not be afraid.” Each of us expressed our confidence in God as the Great Physician. It was apparent that we should move forward as was instructed by the doctor. The surgery was a success.

Over the next 7 months, when the questions came again, “What do we do?” we repeated the same steps: Pray, speak God’s Word, seek Godly counsel, pray some more. We found that we were closer to God during this time of crisis because we were acutely aware of our desperate need for Him. And quite frankly, that’s a great place to be. In Him, we found the answers to our questions and peace in our hearts because we sensed His presence with us.

So back to the question: “What do we do when we don’t know what to do?" or “Where can I turn when there's no one else I can turn to?” or “Who can I lean on when there’s no one to lean on?” or “Where can I hide until the storms pass over?” The answer to all of these questions is clear. It is found in ONE simple truth. We go to Him who is our solid rock, our refuge, our shelter, our friend. That’s WHO, WHAT, WHEN and WHERE to ALL questions we have for our today and our tomorrows.

The prayer warriors and praisers showed up for our Ruth just like King Jehosophat’s praisers came through for him. May our battle cry be like those who find their voices in complete surrender to He Who knows what to do when we say with King Jehosophat: “We don’t know what to do, but our eyes are on you, Lord!” (2 Chronicles 20:12)

Check Out This Peace Zone

My daughter and I met up to nail down our supplies and food list for Payton's annual-birthday-celebratory fishing trip next week. Always his birthday request! Meeting at their courtyard was the perfect place. You can see by Emma’s peaceful demeanor, it is definitely a peace zone. That is – until another dog strolls by and, she thinks she’s a hundred-pound Doberman by the way she’s ready to take that dog out. It's hilarious because, at her ripe age, she has very few teeth left. It is definitely her bark – not her bite that guards their home!

But, this morning, Emma isn’t distracted by anything outside of her domain. She’s at peace. And with that, Staci and I strike up a conversation about less striving, less hustle, less hassle and more living in that place of peace that only comes from a deep, intimate relationship with the Prince of Peace. Emma must know Him intimately.

Don’t we desire that more than anything? That simply flowing, abiding and living in the peace that Jesus lived in when He walked this earth. I mentioned it before and I urge you again to watch “The Chosen” series. Throughout the series you see Jesus meandering along – intentional and purposeful – yet unhurried, not filled with anxiety or trepidatious about what is about to happen, but always on the look-out to strike up a conversation, to bring understanding and peace to matters of strife, to calm troubled waters – both naturally and in the people He encountered.

The scripture that comes to mind is from Luke 4, the passage where people became so angry at Jesus, as He taught in their synagogue, that they tried to push Him off a cliff. But in verse 30, it says “He walked away”. I love that. He walked away from the chaos to get into His peace zone. I purpose to live in that peace zone too. When I choose that peace and something comes up that unsettles me, then I walk away too!

And, in the matters of life, as long as I fix my thoughts on my Prince of Peace, I'm stable and at peace. I know the world's peace depends on calm seas, favorable circumstances, getting our way, things going as expected, with very few challenges. That sounds comfy, but as soon as our "apple cart gets turned over", the peace of the world dissipates and we are left with anxiety and concern. The peace I know well is the peace Jesus gives. That peace helps me face circumstances with a quiet confidence that guides me -- not contingent on what's going on around me, but what's inside me -- better yet, WHO'S inside me. Jesus said, "Peace, I give you -- my peace I give you -- not as the world gives I you! Let not your heart be troubled." John 14:27

Prayer is the Key and Faith Unlocks the Door

Prayer is the Key and Faith Unlocks the Door
I defer my writings to this beautiful prayer today -- the day our President declared it to be a National Day of Prayer. May we pray it with complete faith and trust in our God -- with Whom nothing is impossible:
πŸ™πŸ™πŸ™Prayer for the Coronavirus Epidemic CrisisπŸ™πŸ™πŸ™
LORD JESUS, we ask you to protect us from the coronavirus. You are powerful and merciful; let this be our prayer -

πŸ™πŸ» “Have mercy on me, my God, have mercy on me, for in you I take refuge. I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed.” (Ps‬alm ‭57:1‬)

JEHOVAH SHALOM, Lord of Peace, we remember those living in coronavirus hotspots and those currently in isolation. May they know your presence in their isolation, your peace in their turmoil and your patience in their waiting. Prince of Peace, you are powerful and merciful; let this be their prayer.

πŸ™πŸ» “May your mercy come quickly to meet us, for we are in desperate need. Help us, God our Savior, for the glory of Your name.” ‭‭(Psalm‬ ‭79:8)

GOD OF ALL COMFORT AND COUNSEL, we pray for those who are grieving because of this virus, reeling from the sudden loss of loved-ones. May they somehow know Your fellowship in their suffering, Your comfort in their loss, and Your hope in their despair. We name before you those known to us who are vulnerable and scared - the frail, the sick and the elderly. [pause] We also remember those doctors, pastors and family-members who are caring for all such people right now. God of all Comfort, You are powerful and merciful; may this be our prayer.

πŸ™πŸ» “He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and He will deliver us again. On Him we have set our hope that He will continue to deliver us.” ‭‭(2 Corinthians‬ ‭1:10‬)

JEHOVAH RAPHA, God who heals, we pray for all medical professionals dealing daily with the intense added pressures of this crisis. Grant them resilience in weariness, discernment in diagnosis, and compassion upon compassion as they care. We thank You for the army of researchers cooperating towards a cure - give them clarity, serendipity and breakthroughs we pray. Rise Sun of righteousness, above this present darkness with healing in Your rays. You are powerful and merciful; may this be our prayer.

πŸ™πŸ» “Sovereign Lord, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for You.” (Jeremiah‬ ‭32:17‬)

GOD OF ALL WISDOM, we pray for our leaders - the WHO and national governments, and local leaders too - heads of schools, hospitals and other institutions. Since you have positioned these people in public service for this hour, we ask You to grant them wisdom beyond their own wisdom to contain this virus, faith beyond their own faith to fight this fear, and strength beyond their own strength to sustain vital institutions through this time of turmoil. God of all Wisdom and Counsel, you are powerful and merciful; may this be our prayer.

πŸ™πŸ» “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear.” (Ps‬alm ‭46:1-2‬)

“Surely He will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you.” ‭‭(Ps‬alm ‭91:3-7‬)

πŸ™πŸ» “Answer me when I call to You, my righteous God. Give me relief from my distress; have mercy on me and hear my prayer.” (Psalm‬ ‭4:1‬)

May El Shaddai, the Lord God Almighty who loves you protect you. May Jesus Christ, His Son who died for you save you. And may the Holy Spirit who broods over the chaos and fills your life with peace, intercede for you and in you for others at this time.

πŸ™πŸ» “The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to His heavenly kingdom. To Him be glory for ever and ever. Amen.” (2 Timothy‬ ‭4:18‬)

And He Shall Be Called Prince of Peace

Happy 4th Sunday of Advent! Our journey is leading us to the birth of our Savior. We've embraced each Sunday’s symbolism in the Advent Christmas wreath’s candles. The first Sunday was hope, then faith, last Sunday’s was joy and today, we light the last purple candle to mark the final week of our journey. This final candle, symbolizes peace. It reminds us of the message of the angels: “Peace on earth, good will toward men.” Luke 2:14

The angels were announcing that we can have peace and good will to each other regardless of what is going on in our world. How can it be? Because Isaiah prophesied years before Who was coming to bring peace! And it certainly wasn’t a politician, a diplomat, an angel or even a saint. It….rather, HE is coming! Isaiah spoke these words in Isaiah 9:7 “And His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father – PRINCE OF PEACE.”

Of all the scriptures that we hear during the Christmas season, this is one of my favorites. That’s because I have first-hand experience of knowing that peace that can only be found in knowing the Prince of Peace. He has kept me calm, assured, peaceful and confident during some of the greatest challenges in my life -- dealing with loved ones' illnesses, financial crises, having to make critical decisions and handling day-to-day responsibilities. The Prince of Peace is my constant companion.

When all seems chaotic and questions loom, and I wonder, “What do I do now?” -- the light comes on, and, once again, the scripture, "Him (or Her) I will keep in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Me (my Prince of Peace)." Isaiah 26:3, comes to me. I fix my mind on Him, and His peace always pervades my world, my circumstances, my home and my heart. When anxiety, concern and distraction tries to overtake me, I often put on praise and worship music and I always acknowledge He, the Peace-giver and Peace-maker Who is in my presence, and the atmosphere is replaced with calm peace and assurance that God has me and all my cares in His control. God knows about this life journey we are all on. He even knows the outcome!

So why should we worry, fret or be concerned? As 2020 is fast approaching, we may have questions about what our future will look like. No doubt, we'll encounter our share of ups and downs. But, let's listen, and take to heart the words of Jesus, our Prince of Peace, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27)

While we can’t know all that 2020 will hold for us, we can know the peace that the Prince of Peace provides. He is able to sustain us through anything that might come our way. So, peace AND the Prince of Peace, be with you and yours -- today and tomorrow!

Jesus Loves Me – This I Know!

Life happens. You hit and fractured your toes when you ran into the end of the door and have to go to the ER. You were attacked by woman-sucking mosquitoes and now you must carry an anti-itch “After Bite” oil for relief. You have to call an Exterminator to get rid of the pests. A pre-cancerous area on your leg has to be removed by the dermatologist. Your garage door didn’t close because it came off the chain. You thought it closed behind you, but didn't. Your neighbor tried to close it for you and your home alarm goes off and you don’t get the call from the alarm service so the police are summoned. You lose your key fob and have to replace it. You forget the tickets you printed out to a very important event. A crazy looking bump shows up on your foot and a big red blotch shows up on your leg. Your washing machine is making squealing noises. All of that happened within a week.to ME!

But…..Jesus loves me – this I KNOW! God is always there to tap me on the shoulder and give me His gentle reminder, deep within my soul, in spite of my "issues". "Jesus Loves Me” -- that simple little song that I learned many years ago in Sunday School is so very simple, yet so powerfully profound. That one statement grounds me in the truth of who God says I am and the best news is it’s not based on how well I perform or what I look like or what concerns me. The Awesome Creator of heaven and earth AND me, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, the Great “I Am” loves ME!

No question -- we really won’t feel accepted all the time. “Likes and Loves” on our Facebook or Instagram page will never truly make us feel secure. Life is full of surprises -- good and not so good. Life happens and "issues" occur. Having lots of friends and family around us doesn’t mean that we won’t sometimes feel lonely. And chocolate ice cream, as much as I love it, doesn’t satisfy the longings of my soul. There is no person, no diploma or award, or pats on the back that can fix us from the outside when we need to be rewired with fully knowing and embracing….Jesus loves me this I know. Only God can do that.

When my world gets topsy turvy and it seems I’m in the spin cycle of my dryer (which is over 25 years old and I pray it keeps spinning a while longer), I turn to the ONE sure constant that is never questionable. He is my Everlasting, Prince of Peace, Emmanuel — God with us. I draw close to Him so He can separate His solid truth from the shifting emotions and concerns that face me daily.

When life happens, I can choose to let it overwhelm me and perplex me, or I can recall that sweet song once again – “Jesus loves me, this I know”. We are so dearly loved by God. His love causes us to release our woes and cares to Him, and in turn display compassion, kindness and patience even when we don’t feel like it, to someone else. Colossians 3:12, “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience”. When we do that, then the Jesus in us will cause others to start to sing “Jesus loves me this I know.”

Jesus really does love us. The Bible tells us so. Little (and big) ones to Him belong. They are weak but He is strong. Yes, Jesus loves me. Yes, Jesus loves me. Yes, Jesus loves me. The Bible tells me so.

“The LORD has appeared of old to me, saying, Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love: therefore with loving kindness have I drawn you.” Jeremiah 31:3

Peace is Possible….Even in the Midst of a Storm

In my post, yesterday, I mentioned that maintaining peace is what I protect the most. I do my best to stir clear of conflict and if, by chance, that I do encounter some less than peaceful moments, I just ease in closer to my Prince…..of Peace. Since I know that Jehovah Shalom, my God of peace, is also my Prince of Peace, I purposely stay connected to Him throughout my day. Every day we are given the opportunity to lose our cool and our temper and when we LOSE, we also lose our peace.

Buddy (the Wallace family dog) and I take early morning walks. You’d be pleasantly surprised to see, smell and feel the peace that’s found in those early morning hours. I’m reminded of an old song called “In the Garden”. The lyrics went like this: “I come to the garden alone, while the dew is still on the roses, and the voice I hear, falling on my ears, the Son of God discloses. And, He walks with me and He talks with me, and He tells me I am His own. Oh, the joy we share, as we tarry there. None other has ever known!” Yes, that’s the way I feel when I’m in my Prince of Peace’s presence. For several days, in a row, we’ve encountered doves and each time, I’m reminded they symbolize peace, which reminds me of God’s peace. I welcome Him.

There's not a promise in the Bible that says we will be free from troubles, but God promises something better. He promises peace in the midst of our storms. In the fiercest of battles, while the storm is at its strongest, the trusting soul can know inward peace and tranquility. There can be a deep down calm and quiet confidence. PERFECT peace is a condition of freedom from disturbance within the soul. The Hebrew word for peace, "Shalom," has the idea of soundness of health. Being filled with spiritual peace is to be spiritually healthy and free from all discord in the soul. There is no room for jealousy, envy, discontentment, uncontrolled temper, selfishness, pride, intolerance, harsh criticism, fear of anxiety, in the soul that is filled with peace.

My photo inspiration, today, gives visual to this PERFECT peace, and so does the story that accompanies it.

There once was a King who offered a prize to the artist who would paint the best picture of peace. The King looked at all the pictures, but there were only two he really liked. One was of a calm lake. It was a perfect mirror for peaceful towering mountains were all around it. Overhead was a blue sky with fluffy white clouds. All who saw this picture thought that it was a perfect picture of peace. The other picture had mountains, too. But these were rugged and bare. Above was an angry sky from which rain fell, in which lightening played. Down the side of the mountain tumbled a foaming waterfall. This picture did not look peaceful at all. But when the King looked, he saw behind the waterfall a tiny bush growing in a crack in the rock. In the bush, a mother bird had built her nest. There, in the midst of the rush of angry water, sat the mother bird on her nest ... PERFECT peace. Which picture do you think won the prize?

The King chose the second picture. Do you know why? "Because," explained the King, "peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. Peace means to be in the midst of all those things and still be calm in your heart. That is the real meaning of peace."

"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." John 14:27

"I have told you all this so that you may have 'peace' in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world." - John 16:33

Enough said. I wish you this PERFECT PEACE today!

The Happiest Place on Earth

Disney World -- it's supposed to be the happiest place on earth -- but I guess it depends on who's saying it and feeling it. That's where the Wallace's and I are heading today. I know it's a stretch to think I would be interrupting my Lenten "desert" and solemnity for going to that fantasy/magical/wonder/pixie dust world, but, in reality, I like to think that this long-planned adventure is no surprise to God and He might even have orchestrated it because He wants us to put into perspective the ability we have to dream and believe in miracles.

In reality, we're heading there because Payton and Alexia were given Disney World as their big incentive for achieving "nationals" in their Debate and Speech competitions last year, and to make matters even more special, it's the 10th anniversary of Papa and Alexia's birthday celebration when he turned 60 and she turned 6. This year, Papa would be 70 and Alexia turns 16. I love that we get to still include that sweet man on our adventures. After all, he is still so present in our hearts and lives.

I commented to the kids "Well, you're probably not wanting to re-enact riding in the tea-cups and the "It's a small world after all" ride, are you?" To which, both said, "Oh yes we are -- we're not missing a thing!" Which immediately caused us all to break into song "It's a small world after all!"

While Disney is such a sweet adventure with little kids in tow, I'm looking forward to this trip because it represents nostalgia for me as a young girl, when times were simpler and sweeter. Some folks enjoy the artistry and the detail (I know that to be so for Payton, as he has friends who work at Disney and, who knows, maybe with his musical talents, a door may open for him there one day). And some folks have discovered that they can be "kids" without even being a child and they can let that kid come out and play! COUNT ME IN!

Since I'm a romantic at heart, I still embrace the "Dreams come true" likes of Cinderella, Belle, Peter Pan, Little Mermaid and all the other Disney memories from my childhood that initiated my love for Hallmark movies where, though the ending is always expected to be happy, it still brings sweetness and joy.

I know there are those of you who are reading this today and are thinking "Get a life, Donna. In fact, get back in your prayer closet, Donna! Face up to the real nasty and dirty world we live in. Forget the imagery of "And they lived happy ever after" because it's just not so!" And with that thought, I say, "I beg to differ!" This life may have it's disappointments and tribulations....but the greatest BELIEVE-IT-WILL-COME-TRUE-STORY is a true story. John 10:10 "Jesus came to give us abundant life!" It's THE ONE about a Prince and a shoe and a girl who believed in the impossible. Though the Cinderella story, itself isn't true, we CAN believe that there is a Prince of Peace who gave each of us specific shoes that only we can walk in, and He promises that He will dance with us for ALL ETERNITY if we truly BELIEVE IN HIM". John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that WHOEVER (that's you and me) believes in Him, will not perish but have everlasting life!" That's a FOR SURE promise of "And they will live happy ever after!"

I started this post with "The Happiest Place on Earth". It really isn't Disney....it's that place of inner peace that comes with knowing the Prince of Peace, and abiding in Him 24/7. That, my friends.....is truly "The Happiest Place on Earth"!!!

The Purpose Driven Life

The Purpose-Driven Life
I saw this photo and I knew it would be my post for today, December 8th. It touched me so much as it reminded me of God's grand scheme to send His only begotten Son to this earth with the ultimate purpose of dying on a cross for you and me.....so that we could spend eternity with the WHOLE FAMILY of God! Now, that's what I call a "Purpose-Driven-Life".

God also created us with purpose and destiny. This day, in particular, is a huge reminder of that, because I'm celebrating the birth of my baby girl today. And, without a doubt, I know that God was "on purpose" in creating her, and He used her dad and I as vessels to raise her, pour His Word into her, and help direct her in her quests to fulfill her destiny.

I'm remembering the anticipation we had for the day when she would be born. Of all the names we thought about if we had a little girl.....we finally decided on Staci Michelle. Staci means "resurrection life" and Michelle means "close to God". While we had no idea what the future would hold....we knew God and, and we knew He guided us to that name. In so many ways, she brings resurrection life to so many she encounters, as she leads them to the ONE who replaces their fears, rejection, defeat, depression, darkness, pain, and indifference with a new life in Him.

I don't tell you this to impress you, but to impress upon you how important it is to calculate, ponder, pray for and get God's vision for your children. He had that vision for His Son. Would He expect less of us in casting vision for our children? Staci, being born in December, draws my attention to Gabriel's announcement to Mary in Luke 1:30 "And, behold, you will conceive in your womb, and bring forth a son, and you will call his name Jesus." I love that Isaiah 9:6 even gave definition to His name before He was born, "And He will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."

We were all born on purpose by God and FOR His purpose. We are not an accident. God planned the days of our life in advance. God had a plan in creating us and each of us was designed with a purpose in mind. God made us so He could love us.

On a final note about the names we give our children....what we name our children shouldn't be a mere conglomeration of letters that we put together as a convenient way to refer to them. God proved that when He named His son Jesus -- that name that is ABOVE all other names, that descibes His personality and gives interpretation of His character traits. He lived up to His name and it gives us hope, life, and blessing. Indeed, names are important! How awesome that His name is THE ONE like no other! How awesome is it that His purpose was wrapped up in His name that "at the name of Jesus, every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess that He is Lord." Philippians 2:10

The Ten Commandments and Peace

Day 274 of Photo Inspirations -- The 10 Commandments & Peace
Having spent the last 4 days at a beautiful retreat center in Luther, OK, and experiencing the peace of God in this away-from-it-all location, was beyond explanation.  Finding ourselves in many opportunities to "Be Still and Know....He is God" was exactly what we all needed to experience.   Most of us there, from young single women, to young mothers to more mature women,  live with daily opportunities to face conflict AND noise -- from careers, attending school, raising children, health and financial challenges, etc.  But, when there's an opportunity, like what we had over the last several days, to go to place of quiet and stillness, we have the incredible opportunity to refresh, restore, reconcile, and rejuvenate.

Before I left this "oasis" yesterday morning, I took these two photos -- the first being a beautiful statute of the Ten Commandments carved into marble stone.  And, then as we were driving out of the Retreat Center, this sign bade us farewell......"Go in Peace".

I thought about what we experienced during those 4 days -- peace, serenity, feeling in touch with God, hearing His voice, having MANY "aha" moments, seeing women experience life transformation, and it occurred to me......those 10 Commandments expressed how it's possible.

1.  You shall have no other gods before Me.
2.  You shall not make idols.
3.  You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.
4.  Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
5.  Honor your father and your mother.
6,  You shall not murder.
7.  You shall not commit adultery.
8.  You shall not steal.
9.  You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
10. You shall not covet.

I read this in our local newspaper:  "Last week, the Capitol Preservation Commission, following a ruling by the state Supreme Court and a district judge, ordered that the Ten Commandments monument be removed from the Capitol grounds by Oct. 12th."

Honestly, I don't get that those 10 Commandments could be so controversial, but nevertheless, for my part.....I live by them.  And, I'm so thankful that the blessings in my life are attributed to those "rules of conduct", God's laws, and keeping Him FIRST above all else.  Everyone is entitled to their own rules of conduct, but "As for me AND my house....we will serve the Lord".

Of course, leaving those grounds and seeing those words "Go in Peace" made perfect sense as to how we should live.  "Go in God's peace" that represents the greatest "system" for success -- principles that respect our fellow man -- principles that, if followed, guarantee a peaceful and abundant life.

And, by the way, it's possible to find a place of peace like that Retreat Center.....even if it's in the middle of a football game or cleaning house with kids playing Nerf War games.  In our hearts and minds, we can "check-out" of the routine and experience that "peace that passes understanding".  Going to Him Who is our PRINCE OF PEACE -- anywhere and anytime -- we'll find Him there.  I KNOW!  I'm there right now!

What Do You Do When You Don't Know What to Do?

Day 177 of Photo Inspirations -- What Do You Do When You Don't Know What to Do?
I take my daily FB postings very seriously. Throughout the day I pay attention to people, places and things that could potentially be the inspiration for me. It wasn’t that my day was boring or didn’t have some great times with friends, but I just didn’t FEEL IT like I typically do.

So, what do I do when I don’t know what to do?  The first thing is I pray. That’s what I did yesterday. I prayed and said, “What do I do when I don’t know what to do?”  And it hit me, that prayer is what my post is supposed to be for today – responding to that question.

I recall a very specific day when we asked that question.  We had just received the diagnosis from my husband’s doctor:  “You have Stage 4 Renal Cell Carcinoma that has metastasized to a tumor that is impinging on your spinal cord.  It’s a life or death matter.  You must have immediate surgery or you could be paralyzed.”  Ron, my husband, being an in-charge guy, and not moved by anxiety or concern, declined the offer for the surgery. He wanted to research what he’d been told, get a second opinion, seek counsel and take his time. But the doctor was insistent on aggressively moving forward.  So what do you do when you don’t know what to do?   PRAY.  We prayed for God’s wisdom, His strength, His guidance, and most of all, His peace.  We needed peace that day like we had never needed it before.

At the same time, we were speaking words from God's Word:  "Our God, our Healer.  He is our Prince of Peace.  By His stripes we are healed.  We trust in you, God. We will not be afraid.”

Then, we sought Godly counsel from our children, and had a family meeting via phone.  We prayed for discernment of God’s best wishes for the course of action we should take. After prayer, each of us expressed our confidence in God as our Great Physician.  After hearing that each of us had peace about the Tulsa medical team of physicians that we had been directed to so far, and that it was apparent that we should not wait as we had been instructed, Ron said, “Okay, let’s do it! Call the doctor!” We did and within the next 48 hours, he had the surgery and it was successful.

Over the next 7 months, when the questions came again, we repeated the same steps:  Pray, Speak the Word, Seek Godly counsel, pray some more.  We found that we were closer to God during this time of crisis because we were acutely aware of our desperate need for Him.  And quite frankly, that’s a great place to be. In Him, we found the answers to our questions.

The answer to this question and many more:  “Where can I turn when there's no one else I can turn to?  Who can I talk to when no one wants to listen?  Who can I lean on when there’s no one to lean on?  Where can I hide until the storms pass over?  The answer to all of these questions is found in ONE SIMPLE TRUTH.  We go to Him who is our solid rock, our refuge, our shelter, our friend.  That’s WHO, WHAT, WHEN and WHERE to ALL questions we have for our todays and our tomorrows.

Peace I Give To You

Day 110 of Photo Inspirations -- Safe Harbor
By tonight, we will have been travelling on the Atlantic Ocean 7 days.  We were detoured from Halifax, Nova Scotia because of the low pressure system, but tomorrow we'll be docking in the Azores, Portugal.  It's okay with most all of us, because Nova Scotia has 3 feet of snow and the Azores will be in the 70s.  We welcome that climate.  Then we'll be heading on to Ireland.  I'm really look forward to being there.  My grandparents were Irish, so maybe you could say I'm heading toward my family "roots".  These are a few pics of my friends and I enjoying this beautiful ship.  By no means is anyone complaining about being aboard this little city.  The food, the entertainment, the activities, and the comfortable areas all over make for a beautiful and restful experience.  We've had four time zone changes and will have others before getting to Denmark on May 2nd.

I've been talking a lot about staying in peace.   I've loved water skiing -- I could do some pretty awesome moves as a slalom water skier, but as I look out the windows of this ship, I see some pretty rough waters -- white capping.    I would have never attempted skiing on waters like these.   But inside this ship -- we don't even notice the rough waters.  It is stable.  I'm sitting at the table in the dining room as I type this.  I just finished my breakfast and the glasses and the dishes on the table weren't moving a bit -- even my coffee and orange juice aren't moving inside the glasses and cups.   It is a stable place of comfort and peace.

And, in the matters of life, as long as I fix my thoughts on my Prince of Peace, I'm stable and at peace.  I know the world's peace depends on calm seas, favorable circumstances, getting our way, things going as expected, with very few manageable challenges.  That sounds all sweet and nice, but as soon as our "apple cart gets turned over", the world's peace tends to dissipate and we are left with anxiety and concern.  But here's the peace I know well -- the peace Jesus gives.  That peace helps me face circustances with a quiet confidence that guides me -- not contingent on what's going on around me, but what's inside me -- better yet, WHO'S inside me. Jesus said, "Peace, I give you -- my peace I give you -- not as the world gives I you!  Let not your heart be troubled."   John 14:27

Peace in the Midst of the Storm

Day 85 of Photo Inspirations -- Peace in the Midst of the Storm
Dark clouds looming.  Tornado warnings. Hail warnings. Heavy rains and flooding warnings. News reports kept urging those in the path of the storm, to take cover.  Family calls to check on  me.  I'm in the toy closet with pillows over and under me.  Granddaughter wants me to go to a storm shelter.  I'm quoting scripture..." I dwell in the secret place of the Most High. I abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord He is my refuge, my fortress, my God in Him I trust."  That's always my emergency 911 number. Psalm 91:1 that is.  I pray and speak safety and protection to all of us in the pathway of the storm.  I pray and speak to the storm and tell it to cease and desist. (God's Word says we can do that:  Mark 11:23 "Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them.")   I quote my Prince of Peace's words as I speak to the storm -- "Peace -- be still."  And, personally, MY peace was still.   Just a short while later, I heard on the news station, "Cold front is pushing the tornado activity out of the area."  While there was calamity and devastation from yet another Oklahoma storm, it could have been so much worse.  I'm so grateful that it wasn't.

I'm well acquainted with living in "tornado alley".  Over the years, we witnessed many tornadoes, as well as the aftermath.  We watched our barn roof be taken off (yes, I said "watched").  The tornado worked its path down Keystone Lake and our home and acreage backed up to it.  We took to our under-the-stairs closet for safety when the winds grew to such ferocious velocity.  My husband's parents lost their home in a tornado, but they were safe in a bathroom shower stall. They came out with not a scratch on them.

And, with natural storms, as well as those we face in life's circumstances and adversity, we can still make it through by finding peace in the midst of the storm by trusting in God's faithfulness.  Wednesday night, I was singing an old song.... "So let the storms rage high, the dark clouds rise. They don't worry me, for I'm sheltered safe within the arms of God. He walks with me, and not of earth shall harm me, for I'm sheltered safe within the arms of God."

After being in the toy closet for just a few minutes, and hearing the "all clear" report, I got up and turned around and looked at that closet and realized it's still Spring cleaning time around here, and since I'm here, I might as well get this toy closet all organized and cleaned out.  "All things work together for good to those who love God and are the called according to His purpose."  Romans 8:28.  "Thanks, God, for the light-works, wind-works, and water-works Wednesday night.   You definitely got our attention."

Spring Has Sprung

Day 80 of Photo Inspirations -- Spring Has Sprung!
Winter is passed at my house!  These photos are of some of my Springtime decor'!    I love the bright colors -- similar to what's outside.  And, to make this Spring fling even more exciting, it came with a burst of energy so much so that I transferred out all my Winter clothes and shoes for my Spring & Summer ones.   And, I'm already feeling the desire to do some Spring cleaning, and clean-out.
During the Winter months, it's easy to be somewhat lethargic -- just wanting to settle for "make-do".   But, Winter is over -- and I'm starting my cleaning up, and out, list -- closets, garage, pantry, refrigerator -- making room for more space and organization, and even some new!

Yes, Spring has sprung and it's in the air....everywhere!   The grass is starting to have some green shoots coming through.  I'm sitting at my desk looking out my front window, and I see my crabapple tree budding and sprouting.   I heard the birds singing their anthems  this morning.  I'm wearing a Spring outfit to church today.  I'm done with the dark colored Winter ones -- that season is over.
And with all the sweet, fresh, bright and beautiful sights and sounds.....along came some creepy spiders, too.  How do they know it's time to make their presence known?  And, they're probably already alerting their "fly and ant" friends that it's time to come out and play!

Yes, we'd like to think that EVERYTHING will be "picture perfect" now that Winter is over, but spiders, mowing lawns, and hot temperatures......and LIFE will soon be here.  But God Almighty, in His infinite wisdom -- built within us a coping mechanism to handle the Winters, the Springs, the Summers and the Falls of our lives.  It's a spiritual barometer that tells us our heart status.
You've probably seen the bumper sticker that says "No Jesus; No peace.  Know Jesus; Know peace!"   From firsthand experience, in Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall -- no matter what the season brings to my world.....I still KNOW His peace that prevails through the storms, the rains, the spiders and the pains.

It's time for us to do some internal Spring cleaning!  It's time to get our spiritual house cleaned out and freshened up, so that the Prince of Peace can settle in and bring us SPRINGtime in our hearts and souls everyday!  Come on -- let's roll away the stone from our hearts today, and let Him in......to STAY!

And His Name Shall Be Called Prince of Peace

“And His name shall be called…………Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:7

Of all the scriptures that we hear during the Christmas season, this is one of my favorites. That’s because I have first-hand experience of knowing that peace that can only be found in knowing the Prince of Peace.   He has kept me calm, assured, peaceful and confident during some of the greatest challenges in my life -- dealing with loved ones' illnessses, financial crises, having to make critical decisions and handling day-to-day responsibilities  -- both personally and professionally.

Any time anxiety, concern and distraction tries to overtake me, I put on praise and worship music, and the atmosphere is replaced with calm peace and assurance that God has me and all my cares in His control. God knows about this life journey we are all on. He even knows the outcome!

So why should we worry, fret or be concerned?  As 2015 is fast approaching, we may have questions about what our future will look like.  No doubt, we'll encounter our share of ups and downs. But, let's listen, and take to heart the words of Jesus, our Prince of Peace, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 14:27

While we can’t know all that 2015 will hold for us, we can know the peace that the Prince of Peace provides and He is able to sustain us through anything that might come our way.

Celebrating THE NAME

I'm so grateful to be with my girl this weekend before her birthday on Monday (tomorrow).  One day isn't enough to celebrate her -- I need several days.  What a precious treasure she has been to me.

We already had a beautiful son who was 2-1/2, then it was almost time for our 2nd child to be born. Back in those days, most of us didn't know ...boy or girl... until they were born.

Even though I knew I would be thrilled with either (it was going to be Robert David if he had been a boy), I had a glimmer of hope that a little girl would be born to us.  I'll never forget my husband exclaiming...."Sweetheart, you've got your girl!"   How grateful I was then, and how grateful I am today that God gave me her.

I'm remembering the anticipation we had for the day when she would be born.  Of all the names we thought about if we had a little girl.....we finally decided on Staci Michelle.  Staci means "resurrection life" and Michelle means "close to God".  WOW!  God certainly guided us to that name, because she has been true to those definitions.  In so many ways, she brings resurrection life to just about everyone she encounters --  helping people experience a fresh new life from one of rejection, defeat, depression, darkness, pain, and indifference .....because she is so "close to God" and that closeness magnetically draws them closer to HIM.

I don't tell you this to impress you, but to impress upon you how important it is to calculate, ponder, pray for and get God's vision for your children, AND the name you give them.  He had that vision for His Son that gives us a perfect  example to follow.

What we name our children shouldn't be a mere conglomeration of letters that we put together as a convenient way to refer to them.  God proved that when He named His son Jesus --  that name that is ABOVE all other names, that descibes His personality and gives  interpretation of His character traits. He has lived up to His name and it gives us hope, life, and blessing.  Indeed,  names are important!   How awesome that His name is THE ONE like no other!

In His Presence is Fullness of Joy

Wednesday morning, November 17th, 2010, I posted this paragraph to FB:

"My Honey, Angel, Sweetheart, Confidant, and Best Friend is having breakfast with Jesus this morning....and I'm sure it's the "All You Can Eat Buffet"! We're celebrating his homegoing last night. I know he was given the "royal treatment" -- red carpet, anthems playing and choirs singing. Thanking God for His tender mercies that made this journey so sweet and precious. And, yes, WE WON!"

And now I recollect this day:
My Honey went "home" at 6:57 p.m. on November 16, 2010. Now it was the day after, and it was already time to begin the preparations for his homegoing celebration. Yes, that's what we'd do -- celebrate his life and homegoing by showing our respect for this wonderful man, with festivity and rejoicing. We asked God to guide each step we'd take in this day.

Symbolism plays such a vital role in our worship to God -- no matter what religious affiliation we may have -- our hand gestures, religious icons, candles, and other various forms of worship. And, likewise I would find so much symbolism in the decisions surrounding the preparations that followed. Our first appointment was with Hayhurst Funeral Home. Jack Hayhurst (Jackie, to me) is the owner/director, and I was his baby sitter when he was five years old. It made perfect sense -- since I took care of him -- he'd take care of my Honey's earth suit -- his body -- for a few days. My daughter, Staci, Ron's sister, Karen, and I would be there, to make the important decisions. Such peace pervaded us. There was no dread or fear -- just lighthearted discussions about this beautiful, precious man that loved, and was loved by so many. We answered all the important questions about his life, funeral desires, and then, what I most did not look forward to was selecting his casket. As Jack opened the door to the casket room, and to my surprise, my concerns were null and void. I felt complete peace once again as my eyes immediately were drawn to a cherry wood casket. We knew that it should be the one --it so represented the part of my Honey's life as a carpenter-contractor-builder, and the wood matched our kitchen cabinets at home -- the home that he restored, like so many lives he had ministered to in his life -- restoring and making something beautiful out of dysfunction and brokenness.

From there, we went to the florist -- Toni's Florist -- Toni Garner is a member of our parish and her generosity and support to our Women of the Madalene (our women's ministries group) and to our parish, once again, made perfect sense to handle the flowers. Yellow roses would be my first choice. That is what we had in our wedding 44 years ago. Since then, whatever occasion we celebrated, my Honey would always buy me yellow roses and we had yellow rose bushes in our garden area at home. Every Spring and Summer we were reminded of our love for each other when we saw the yellow roses blooming. Four yellow roses would represent our children, Larry, Staci, Ryan and Shawntel, and six smaller yellow roses would represent each of our grandchildren in the floral arrangements. And since it's Fall and the Thanksgiving season, the balance of the arrangements should include harvest colors -- oranges, reds, yellows, browns -- mixed with Fall colored leaves. Our eyes gazed at the Christmas decorations already displayed so beautifully throughout the shop. The little bird Christmas ornaments drew our attention, and we thought "how ideal it woud be to have them amidst the arrangement -- to represent our sweet, precious grandchildren". Toni wanted that to be her contribution -- five brown birds for the boys and one little hot pink bird for our one granddaughter. And the final addition, were two red hummingbirds to place on the arrangement from me -- a special representation of the hummingbird feeder that was hung just outside our bedroom window that Ron loved to watch so much.

Our final appointment of the day was with Father Jack, who we could tell, had already spent a considerable amount of time praying for just the right message to be left to our family and friends about my Honey. Ron and I were both raised in evangelical protestant families, rich with the training and love for God's Word. That was our foundation. Now, for 26 years we had been a part of the Catholic Church that rounded out who we have been and who we love now so passionately -- along with the beautiful faith community that we have come to love so deeply. We knew that those who attended the funeral would be from various religious backgrounds -- Protestant, Catholic and many in between -- but the most important objective -- would be my Honey's ultimate goal in life -- to see unity among all of God's kids. "How about Ryan (our son) opening the service?" was Father Jack's first question. "He can explain Ron's heart to see unity in the Body of Christ". Perfect. And when he asked what Old Testament reading we would like, Staci immediately responded, "Isaiah 58" -- Dad's personal mission scripture that was at the heart of his mission in life: 'And you will be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of the streets in which to dwell."' His desire was always to be a peacemaker, restore relationships, and bring about healing in hurting lives. That is what Isaiah 58 talks about. Yes, that would be the one. Then the scripture from Psalm, Psalm 23 -- The Lord is My Shepherd scriptures -- so appropriate, because that is where he has been for many months -- lying down in green pastures, resting beside the still waters so that his body and soul would be restored. And finally, the Gospel reading that I knew was the one: John 12:24 "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit." I know that in my Honey's graduation to heaven, the many seeds he planted into so many individuals' lives would be the fruit of this tremendous grain of wheat. And during the bringing forward of the gifts in the service, Payton, our 10-year old grandson would play the piano -- another symbol of the "bearing of fruit" -- Papa was a grand pianist and now his fruit is borne in his grandson.

It seemed everything was being orchestrated by God….and my Honey. When Staci, Mom, Karen and I went back to the funeral home to see my Honey after they had him all ready for viewing, I was expecting to shed a few tears when I would see his body. But as we walked into the viewing room, the first words I thought, "This is not Ron! He is not here!" All I saw was that earth suit that he had lived in and it was not him any longer. We knew, instantly, that he would want everyone to remember him as he was -- full of life, joy, encouragement, peace and strength. The casket would remain closed from then forward. That's the way he would want it -- besides, as someone exclaimed, "No one could get his hair perfect enough!" He always received comments about his "perfect" hairdo!

And the next day, when we had family visitation time at the funeral home, we knew our decision was the right one, as visitors came to express love and condolences, they saw a family that had been undergirded, wrapped in and bathed in God's peace -- the presence of God was there in that room. There was joy and laughter -- no sorrow -- no mourning. We really were at peace. As Psalms 16:11 states, "In Your presence is fullness of joy, at your right hand there are pleasures forevermore." The celebration indeed had begun -- in our lives, our hearts and our spirits. Deeply we have sensed the sweet presence of God throughout our faith journey -- and now, even more, realizing this joy we feel comes from that Peace -- the Prince of Peace in our lives.
